Chrashsite by axelrinaldo
My first Ludum Dare game! And it's even finished! Splendid!
You've chrashed your helicopter, can you rebuild it with only an axe and a fire that threatens to run out of fuel at any time?
Keep track of your fuel and other resources in the upper left corner. If you run out of fuel it's game over for you, buddy. You can create more fuel in addition to numerous buildings and upgrades by using the number keys while close to the fire. You get the resources needed for this by walking up to trees (and later on rocks) and swinging your axe into them. I'll leave it up to you to discover what all the upgrades do, I'm sure you'll do fine.
Good luck!

Controls: - W and S for forwards and backwards movement. - A and D to rotate your character and swing your axe. - Shift to sprint (when unlocked) - I to toggle ironworks (when unlocked, important to remember since they drink fuel like I've been drinking tea) - R to restart - Escape to exit
Tools: - Unity - Krita (poorly used as you may see) - LMMS (also poorly used, playing in a wind orchestra for 10 years hasn't prepared me for this) - Audacity
Since this is only my second original game ever I know it's not very good but I can't help but be proud of it anyway. Please make sure you give me plenty of harsh critique so I can convince myself I shouldn't be.

Cutting mechanic is clever.
Overall I enjoyed your game and you clearly managed to create an experience. The music sets the mood really well and I like the idea of having to swing my axe physically to chop down trees and gather rocks. The controls are a bit stiff and I think you could improve it a lot by allowing the player to swing the axe with the mouse.
Overall I would say you did a great job!
It feels like there needs to be a little more visual feedback when performing an action, I wasn't sure if I was chopping things at first, maybe have the trees shake a bit.
Would have loved more sounds.
@munkkeli Great feedback, making a button based UI would probably have been a good idea, the amount of number pressing options got a bit out of hand... The movement is also clunky as you say, following @refsa 's suggestion and making it mouse-based would probably have been smoother.
@cryptomnesic Good idea, that would probably have made the axe swings feel weightier. I'll try to think more about visual feedback in future games.
@despiciestboi I... don't know how I hadn't thought of that. That is absolutely going on my ideas list, thanks!
@tomdeal Ah, yes, I forgot to consider the ergonomical problems of the axe swinging mechanic. :D Glad you enjoyed it!
The movement controls are a bit frustrating.
Despite it being written in the instructions, it took me a minute to recognize that I needed to rotate my character to chop trees - it also took me a minute to recognize what were trees. After the first few minutes it felt intuitive though. Some additional feedback would have been useful, since I found myself asking "What's this grey thing and why can't I chop it?"
I also appreciated the story text. It did a good job setting the tone and context.
@rustyrobotgames Yeah, it turns out I have a really poor perception of what a tree looks like from above. :D Thanks for the feedback!
@congusbongus Yeah, it was supposed to be a much shorter game but I both went a bit overboard with the amount of upgrades and the resource cost for each of them. I'll have to remember this valuable lesson for LD47.
@bongo227 Glad you enjoyed it! I agree that the movement really would have benefitted from some more work. I also would have liked to add a specific chainsaw sound if only time had allowed me to.
@pincushion It makes me so happy to hear you appreciated it! :) I really should take an art course in preparation for the next Ludum Dare. Or make a text based game, that might also work. :D
