Keep Clam Stary Home by Seagull

[raw]
made by Seagull for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Your goal is to keep your human from going mad. You have to manage resources, and run to shops / parks and go to work.

Big thanks to my wife for keeping me alive during the Jam, and feeding me food

Controls RoomScreen: mouse Run Screen: A,D or Left, Right arrows

You can chill at home or you can go to one of the following locations: 1. Shop 2. Park 3. Work 4. Shopping mall

*Totally not inspired by the current world situation * :joy:

Status: Some pars are not finished yet. 1. No win or loss screen, just a message. 1. No bonuses during the run. Idea was that you can find stuff on the road, and that'll incentivise you to change lanes (and jump under the cars :)) 1. No random events. 1. No money. 1. No hunger forcing you to eat. 1. No use for toilet paper apart from panic effects. 2. You can't see the time advancing unless it's a new day.

P.S. I'm not entirely sure it's balanced, and winnable. Screenshot 2020-04-20 at 02.46.36.png Screenshot 2020-04-20 at 02.46.36.png

Tools used:

  1. Piskel for my improvised pixel-art.
  2. Unity for everything else.
  3. Entitas, and ECS framework to keep code organised.
  4. Unity's Scriptable Objects, cause they are nice.

I tried to keep game logic isolated from Unity, but still used a lof of Unity;s easy to replace utilities. i.e. I was using Vector3, knowing I can replace it with any other vector lib if I ever need to port it. Some part of the Room's logic, around user interactions are more heavily connected to Unity, and will be harder to replace. That was a trade-off, I had to make, as I've been running out of time.

I tried to keep a healthy sleep habits, so I've slept normally, leaving me less time to work.

Finished the game (survived)! Felt a little lonely. = ) Nice mechanics!

Just discovered that uploaded an old version, with broken "death" mechanics.
So, pushed a new one. Now you actually can lose! :)

Interesting concept. Getting places was TOUGH at first, but after a while I got the hang of it. Very pertinent to current events! Good job.

Interesting game and fitting for the current times :D I wish the minigames were shorter and would get harder over time or something. Also a countdown to start the minigames would be nice as the first time I didn't know whats happening and I died.

@stefanie-leitch @thx4nothing Thank you for the feedback!

Actually run sequences were supposed to have bonuses on the road to incentivise moving. And i thought of making them faster / tougher over time but didn't had enough time for that. :disappointed:

Also plan was to make you hungry / or randomly injure yourself at home, to make push you out of home, but again..

Still quite happy with the jam, as it's my first one.

Will do a postmortem later on, maybe a blog post.

Really fun. I enjoyed playing and think the art is cute and the gameplay is smooth and understandable.

Fun little game and I see you originally intended to add more to the walking parts. I can definitely see how this game could be expanded upon as well which is nice. Also it fits the theme quite well.

@danielrmorgan Thanks! Art is nowhere near my strong point. :)
But I found https://www.piskelapp.com/p/create to be very easy to use and intuitive. It helped a lot!

I liked the idea, but the different activities were pretty repetetive. I once crossed the road, but usually it was best to just stay where you were and jump left and right. I found the walking dude animation very funny :) I survived the week and that's all that matters!

Interesting... pas tout compris mais .... Interesting.

Liked the idea. A bit repetitive as someone said. Needs more work on the graphics to make it feel like you are actually out walking. Maybe actually walk in a park, and not just straight forward, like on a road. But, I do like it.

@mimusangel Merci!

@galgris Also some animations would be nice :)

@joonamo I was planning to add collectables on the road, but didn't manage to do it on time.

Hey! Great job on getting it done. Some constructive feedback: I think regardless of the level I chose, I could win by just staying in 2 lanes. There was never a need to use the other lanes as the obstacles never stacked up beside each other.

But overall good job. It was fun bouncing between the obstacles(infected people?), I think the locked lane positions made it much funner than if they had be smoother float positions.

Cool concept! It took a while to figure out what options I had and what everything did but it was enjoyable. Some more explicit tutorials and explanations of what to do/what things do could go a long way! Good job :)

good job, like the details and descriptions on each action taken. especially how using the computer can be positive or negative depending on what they do on the computer. very relevant and funny. the death meter is helpful too. the driving sequences were a little confusing, i wasn't sure what the circles were.

@matt2728 @fakefrogsonly @cjgammon Thank you for the feedback!

I really wish I can polish it a bit more. Will probably do it over the week, and post it separately as a blog post.

Lovely game with several minigames, I really like it.
A bit of sound would have been a nice addition, but hey, it's only 48 hours :)

Cheers
