Cubi & Spheri by Hugo kieffer

[raw]
made by Hugo kieffer for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

we didn’t manage to get as far with this as we’d hoped, the AI is not good(and i forgotto add nav mesh obstacle to the environement) the level is too clumsy and there is no sound but with the problemes we've got durig the jam i think the result is ok and that there is a bit of fun in there i hope you will like it, we will make a after jam version with all the missing thing. but here’s what we’ve got enjoy!

Control a robot Cubi and protect your friend Spheri from terrible enemies! Watch out for Spheri's battery and make sure it doesn't get out of control when reaching electrical terminals!

A game by Hugo Kieffer and Maxence Couteau.

Loved the visuals and the physics!

It would greatly improve to have more feedback on the attacks and a little more action.

Very smooth gameplay. The game looks very good. I liked it a lot. I only had some issues attaching Spheri to that power station.
Overall, great entry! Congrats!

Great graphics - the characters look like they have personalities.

Attacking feels a bit floaty, but the rope physics is fun and makes sense with the gameplay (rope looks good too, like a real cable).

Nice game ! With some little adjustments (like a wall to prevent from falling on the edge x), I'm sure it can become really great !
Keep up the good work !

Those physics are so cool! I love how the two characters are attached to each other, and one is used for fighting and one for healing. Very creative! The art is all very nice and vibrant too, especially the characters! Lovely job!

love the art style and the idea of these teathered shape buddies surviving. shame you didnt get to fully realize your design as i was a bit bored by the enemies as they were. I mainly just ignored them and wandered around the map. i would suggest lowering the hits required to kill an enemy as it felt futile to fight them

what a sweet little game, I like the idea of dragging your cute but derpy little friend behind you and having to protect him, together with the art this gave me a cartoon network vibe (the enemies being like this evil triangle shaped spotlights haha, very insane in a cute way) the lighting was really nice with soft colours and all in all very "marshmallow-y" so to say, haha. If you know what I mean ;)
I agree what others said, fighting felt futile and can therefore become frustrating. I like the idea of the recharging station a lot, however it was a bit weird because after fighting I had a hard time having spheri recharge? I feel like there should be a trigger that when he is there he should dock in or something? Maybe I was just expiriencing a bug.
Let's not forget this is a gamejam entry though, so of course there's never enough time to do something perfect and you two did a great job!
If you wish to continue to work in this I'd recomment maybe having some sort of stamina, mana, electric power if you will that gets recharged when you roll along with spheri (like a generator, you know? =)) and if it's full you can then launch an EMP-of-sorts area of effect attack: like that you also add the challenge of the player having to determine the best timing when to launch this thing to inflict the most damage to the most evil triangles :)
(kind of reminds me of all warcraft games, where during a session you had only one of those strikes and if you did it and hit no one it was super meberrassing, I think that*s where the termn "epic fail" was coined, no joke haha)
also I felt like this would be even more complimented with cute sounds and music! :)
do you know freesound.org? :) you can create an account for free and have access to a huge amount of sounds you can use for free! as for music, I always search on youtube for free music or something. (Just look at the caption though, with some you don't have to do anything, some you have to credit, but pretty much put those in the description here and you're fine)

hey @fatpenguin thank you for you in deepth feedback!,yep the fighting is not great the AI are not ether due to time restreint and some pb whe got during the developpement like lose a part of the set up and due to insomnie and tiredness on my part, the ia and fight part is not great.

for the recharge issue its strange i'm using a trigger are your sure that the recharging station was full, when you used it, there is a countdown of one minute before you can reuse it to force the player to move to another place on the map,its symbolyze by the lightnings on the station going grey but maybe its not enough of a feedback, if its not that can you explain the circoustance of the bug ?

i like the idea you propose it woul make the fight matter a lot more and make it more dynamic and that would not be that hard to add i think, but for now whe have not plan to rework on the game again.i will just make a version with the sound and a corection of some little pb and add more feedbacks.

for the sound part yep i know freesound.org ! its really great to get sound on it, we have the sound we just need to integrate it to the game.

thank you a lot for your feedbacks!

I don't have Windows, so couldn't play or rate, but I'm very amused that this game is about a cube protecting a sphere, where I made a game about a square protecting a circle. I feel that I've been one upped (in terms of dimension especially), haha.

Seems like a cool game, dig the art style.
Unfortunately I want able to find any controls using just a keyboard and mouse.
Does this game require a controller?

@hugo-kieffer No worries, I'm glad to help :)
Uhmmmm, could have been that I simply didn't get it, but if it was a bug, I cannot really say what happened, I just kept rolling onto it and nothing happened ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
Maybe the cooldown gets paused when you're on the button?

I'm sure you will make something great out of it :D
Btw, if you ever need a break from gamedev-ing, you can check out our game if you'd like (:
Happy developing <3

Cool game! I really liked the graphics! They look really nice, and the mechanics of the rope worked really well! The game could do with some more mechanics and content as I wasn't sure what to do after I toppled the AI. Overall, good game and good job!

You fooled me. Your screenshots of the game look really cool and I was expecting some cool gameplay, but yeah...

To be fair enough, you mentioned in your description that you had some problems and the game is not where it could have been. However, I think the graphics really look awesome and I totally like the idea of you protecting your small brother or child which you have to charge up from time to time.

I'm totally in love with the cable physics. Do you have any tutorial for that? I would love to recreate this and build it into one of my future games.

I think I don't have to talk about the bad/missing parts because you already know it.

I hope you had a great time during the jam and I would love to see a post jam version of the game. However, I know that this is something that rarely happens. Also with my games :see_no_evil:
