Atlantoid Plantoid by microwerx

[raw]
made by microwerx for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

The Atlantoid Plantoid is a mysterious entity who lives in the Sea. When it eats, it gives off oxygen. Humans need oxygen. Therefore, to live, you must feed the plantoid, else it will die. What does the plantoid like to eat? You have had good luck with fish, so try to catch those with your handy harpoon. If you run low on oxygen, travel to the bubble to refill. Swim over to the top of the plantoid and drop the fish to the beast below. But, do not let the plantoid touch you. It is a carnivore after all and will kill you. It will not eat you because you taste kinda icky... That's life I guess. Keep it Alive!

The music and sfx are amazing for a jam game. Great job!

The web player is just showing a grey box after I click "Start Game"

Pretty great! I liked the music a lot, and balancing your air and the plant's health was quite enjoyable.

@wubbaduck If you could let me know what browser you are using, that would be helpful. Please try it again as I have changed from using an OffscreenCanvas to a `document.createElement('canvas')` instead which should be more cross browser friendly.

the vibe and sound were amazing, and i really liked the 3d bg + 2d graphics as well. i was about to ask you to post the music to soundcloud, and then realized you already had haha. the bass synth reminds me MASTER BOOT RECORD, and the sounds you layered on top sound great. the gameplay was a little plain, but the sound and graphics made it really pleasant to play anyway. nice work!

@microwerx Firefox 75.0. That change seems to have fixed the issue. I'll give it a play!

I liked the atmosphere and the music a lot.... and the 3d pixelish background was also nice!
There were too many gauges and displays which I didn't really understand though which made gameplay a little bit confusing

I really like the mix of the 2D low pixel sprites and the 3D background as well as the music and sfx. They add to the bizarre atmosphere of the premise being the symbiotic relationship between you and this weird underwater plant. I also like having the ability to customize my experience with those sliders. Nice job!

Oh no! @daveroony, have you tried a Chrome or Chromium based browser. It works best with those ones. It should also work with Firefox, but there are some graphics glitches. You may also just need to wait for the graphics to load. If you click "log", that might clue you in to whether it succeeded or not.

I like your retro graphics and UI. But sadly I cannot find out how to control your game and where the player is, and frame rate is very slow here (~1 or 2 fps, in chrome).

Sorry @cirno. The game uses WebGL 2.0 and works with Chrome. The slowdowns that are most likely to be common include downloading the assets. ~1-2 fps in chrome might indicate that you do not have hardware acceleration turned on in your browser. BTW, I remember playing your game from the last compo--it was one of my favorites.

I really like the music of this game! Also the choice of mixing 2D and 3D is pretty interesting.

Well done, the games real fun! I found the UI a little busy but had a lot of fun harpooning some fish. I really like the push and pull of feeding something that will straight up murderise you.

Cool idea and the music and sound was great! The controls felt like they could be a bit more responsive. It's a fun entry :)

Overall: Fun & addictive. Pretty hard!

Fun: Cool idea and pretty addictive. I had quite a few attempts but I think I'm just lousy at it. I never quite managed to fill the bar - I guess that's the goal? At times it felt "unfair" for a few reasons. Firstly, the hit box on the flowers are very big (I guess lowering that slider changes it? I tried it and it did seem to help!) Secondly, the flowers suddenly jump up without warning when they grow. It would be good if they grow up gradually, or maybe if we get to see an outline of where they will grow to, for one or two seconds before they jump up. Lastly, there's no warning when I'm low on air (I note that there is an air bar in the screenshot but I don't see it in the game - if this is a last-minute bug, note that the rules permit you to fix those).... but it's not even clear if death is actually penalised?

Innovation: Yeah! I haven't seen something like this before.

Theme: Yes

Graphics: It's functional, though there are a few things that aren't to my taste. The full-red and full-green stuff are gaudy, and there's a mix of different pixel sizes in the different graphics. I'm being pedantic. I like the guy's beard.

Audio: Functional and good.

Humor: Sure, it's a pretty funny situation, especially since why can't this guy just swim to the surface and then swim home.

Mood: I like the way there's an ambient underwater sound mixed in there with the music.

@reheated Thank you for the detailed review. The air gauge bug is due to using a regular “canvas” versus an OffscreenCanvas in HTML5–Chromium/Chrome doesn’t seem to have this issue. Your other points are well taken and I ran out of time before I could put those in—like the flowers growing. Appreciate the constructive feedback!

I'm not sure I understood everything but I had fun killing those poor fishes! Good work!

The game was pretty fun once you got the hang of it. I am not so fond of the graphics because their were too many colors. I think the because of too many colors the game was hard too understand at first. Keep making games, and improving your skills!

Quite difficult but exciting! Interesting aesthethics; a mix of 2D and 3D I haven't really seen before.

Good music!!

Well done!
