Feed Meh by MrTroy

[raw]
made by MrTroy for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

ScreenShot.png Doctor C. Mo has solved a huge problem in the world. He's been able to make fruits and vegetables grown to astounding sizes. Pears the size of a human head, carrots that stretch as far as the eye can see, and well... one of his experiments got a little out of control. It now needs to be fed anything "edible". Be careful... once it develops a taste for meat, it may be a hard habit to break

Press arrow keys (Or WASD) to move

Press spacebar to pickup items

Press ALT or CTRL to attack people

ScreenShot3.png

Pickup and put food on the plants leaves to feed it. The more you feed it, the hungrier it gets (If you fill up the bar). Feeding it meat fills up the bar faster thereby increasing your score more.

UPDATE I made an updated version where I tweaked the controls a bit. Added flimsy arms with hands and audio. http://patterport.com/feedmehwa/

I like the idea here. Playing for a score didn't light me on fire, unfortunately — would have loved some more flavor via narrative.

i liked the idea but the controls were a little finnicky and alt is not usually a good choice for browser games because it starts opening options and stuff. good start though!

Fun game! Pressing alt was a bit annoying because it opened something in chrome, but the game still ran fine!

First of all, those quotes are hilarious! Anyway, fun game with good graphics. Agreed that something other than alt should be used (say E or a mouse button). Overall, some tweaks will make this game even better!

Nice graphics and premise. I like how it's dangerous to feed the plant, it makes it an interesting challenge. I agree with others that alt didn't work that well. Good overall.

Great game! The risk reward of food choice is a great mechanic, and there has to be something deeply metaphorically resonant with being eaten by your own demonic plant after giving it an affinity for meat. Great job!

ALT was a terrible choice. It's suppose to be CTRL (Both have always worked) I tried to update it in time when I realized the instructions said ALT, but my cache didn't update before submitting hour was over.

Always up for a little "murder people and feed them to my carnivorous plant" action!

The highlight of the gameplay was the first two ACK's: The first time I was chomped on getting too close, and the first time meat was harvested. Even in this simple form those were very satisfying moments.

The two major complaints as an experience were that the camera drags too far from the player when at full speed, and that the grounds are too sparse of resources. Having a larger harvest of non meat would help balance the play while waiting for a big score of meat AND it would help with player trace direction in relation to the plant if too far away. The speed of the play was excellent and easy to replay. The plant's small bits of animation do well here.

Overall, 4 out of 5 Moranises and one dentist would recommend.

It's a good thing he's not a picky eater ;)
This is a fun concepts with nice animations on the plant! My final score was 122,000

I think a directional indicator (super smash bros style) would be helpful, because when I was far away I lost sight of the plant.

Ah, that was cute. The flower totally ate me after I murdered a person, and just left their carcass at the edge of the map while picking up another vegetable as food instead. Totally worth it.

I did like that the veggies came in at very short supply, which really made the moral choice a difficult one. The character moves exceptionally fast, though, so I found it rather easy to pace myself and scan the entire level pretty easily. I'm not sure that was intentionally. Additionally, it often felt like the camera was having a hard time catching up with how fast the character was moving. It would have been nice to move the camera ahead of the direction you're moving, thus providing a preview of what's in front of your character.

The little arrow that always points to the plant is *super* useful, and highly appreciated. That said, I would have liked it if it was somewhat bigger and more clear (e.g. maybe make it highlight when you're holding something?), as it was difficult to see where it was pointing sometimes.

Too bad the sound didn't make it in. There were some funny details I've noticed that would have definitely been accentuated with the right sound effect. Sounds like this was a bit tougher to make than usual.

Good stuff!

Quick Edit: Also, would have been nice to have some landmarks to better orient myself on where on the arena I actually am. Again, this was where the guidance arrow came to the rescue, but still, it would have been nice to see something besides the light floor all the time.

Great game! I had a blast playing it. Sounds will make it a lot better.

The fact the flower can eat you, added a lot to the game.

Picking up peoples will be highly appreciated.

The controllers are difficult to control as HELL.

I'd like to thank everyone who's played the game already. I am working on the controls and I'm adding sound effects/music. This was fun to make, I didn't get as far in the time I had (I can only do 2 1/2 days because I always have work on the final day). Hopefully you'll all come back and check it out. :D

OK, the banter is *so* fun. First you gotta kill - EXCUSE ME?? The music is also shaping up nicely.
Feedback time! Very on-theme, quite fun. Because the ground has no detail, going far away from the plant feels dangerous, so it's like the game is discouraging you from it? But that's where the yummy humans are!

I appreciated the directional arrow showing you where the plant is at all times, that does what it's supposed to do: it encourages exploration, because you won't get lost.

The main character slides around a bit too much for my taste, and the controls aren't tight. I expect the game to be forgiving with its collisions- let me pick that fruit not only when my dude is colliding with it, but when it's in a larger radius around my dude. Exactly like you did in the post-jam, so I know you get it <3 The controls are tightened too!

I love that Meh will eat you if you're near for too long! I love the sound fading when you're further from the action! Because the playfield is a little bland away from the action though, maybe the sound should fade towards the plant instead of the other way round? To keep the exploration interesting.

All in all, the goal is pushing all your existing mechanics to the max. Which I see you're onto. Very impressive for 2.5 days!
