The Genie of Light by Wilko

[raw]
made by Wilko for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

You play as a genie who has to traverse a dark dungeon using your light core avoiding traps and looking for an idol. Watch out for ghosts and ghouls that might pursue you, preventing you from leaving.

Controls:

  • WASD to move
  • LMB to grow light
  • RMB to shrink light
  • R to restart level
  • ESC to get to your options

Installation:

  • Download TheGenieOfLight.zip
  • Extract the files
  • Run TheGenieOfLight.exe

Don't forget to comment your best times and if you're really sadistic you can try the minimum light or no light genie run (burn out your core before you start moving and do the whole thing in the dark!).

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. This is our first game jam so we'd love to get some tips from the community.

Bug Fixes (for v1.1):

  • The light was too weak to see two of the traps, even at full beam so we buffed it. Thank you to everyone who let us know in the comments.
  • Two of the spear launchers were facing the incorrect directions
  • Added support for MacOS and Linux (currently untested as we don't have these OS)

Beautiful game. Low-light speed run completed. So satisfying. Thanks for the challenge boys.

Smooth design, challenging gameplay and plenty to discover if you have an eye for detail. *Almost* completed low-light speedrun on the last level, it requires some fine-tuned trajectories! Thanks guys, good luck :)

Overall nice idea and good execution! I like the music and the atmosphere. maybe try to make the player point his light with the mouse and not the movement. This way its easier for the player to see. Also, I found that the trap trigger on the right in the second level that did not trigger a trap was a bit misleading.

Well work on lights and core gameplay. Also support opinion that light should emmit to mouse position

Very nice polish and I particularly liked the movement and feel of the game. I do think that using the mouse for the light or at least having the option to activate it would've been nice. Good variety, and a nice soundtrack. Awesome!

Really cool and suiting graphics and music.
I love the level designs and the progression in gameplay throughout the game.
Some trap setups are a bit too random and you are forced to make a guess but other than that I love the visual cue like the numbers on the ground.

I finished in 142.0secs :)

I really enjoyed it overall. Though, I feel too many of the deaths were to lack of knowledge of the level instead of lack of skill, as some things cannot be seen.

Also, what was that clue about Carol eating Sean, like, wtf mate?

A curious concept! Although I found myself shining as bright as possible always, to allow myself better control of the place.

Maybe there could be an ever present small radius of light around the character? The light at its lowest form is not very useful, as you need to explore the map anyway even in low health.

Very fun and challenging. It would be nice if there was a way to deal with the traps other than just activating them and hoping for the best.

Awesome game. I love that you tell a really long boring story so people won't see how to avoid the trap lol. The graphics look great and fit really well with the music. Really good job, I loved this game.

Would be nice if you could add builds for other OS like Linux and Mac.
