Building and Note?

This is my first Ludum Dare and this was amazing, although I think I want to take a rest now :P. To build the game if you're not going to use the pre-built provided will require the following:

  • A C++14 compatible compiler (TDM MinGW, and GCC 8.3 are the compilers used for prebuilt)
  • SDL2, SDL2image, SDL2mixer, SDL2_ttf (as of typing this I don't provide versions in the repo, sorry!)
  • GNU make was used but the game was made in one 2.6k line file so you can easily compile without hassle.

I might not be able to package a Linux version until later today, because I don't know how you package this... If someone could tell me I'd like to know!

Game Description

In a future where humanity has drained nearly all of it's natural resources, a group of oddly armed environmentalists have found the last tree on the plant.

Apparently they're somehow still able to receive nearly endless shipments of low-tech turrets. In their infinite wisdom, they decide to make a last stand to preserve the last piece of green in a sea of gray and dirt...

How long can you last?

Controls

The menus in the game are primarily controlled by arrow keys unless explicitly stated.

The only mouse interaction is used to place and remove units.

  • Enter : In-game will start the wave. Take your time :D
  • Tab : In-game will show you the order and amount of enemies that will come.
  • Escape : opens menu or quits game.
  • M : can mute the "music"

I can't start the game because of missing libraries:

Really want to play this one, but I too get errors about missing DLLs on windows. `libfreetype-6.dll`, `libpng16-16.dll`, `libjpeg-8.dll`, and `libFLAC-8.dll` all throw errors as missing.

Wasn't able to launch; it looks like I was missing some libraries:

libjpeg-8.dll

libpng16-16.dll

libtiff-5.dll

libwebp-7.dll

Wasn't able to find downloads, are these external libs?

crap those are errors for SDL2's external libraries. Thank you for telling me I'll do it right now!

Alright so anyone who tried earlier, I uploaded the missing external libraries for SDL2 image and SDL2 mixer. Should work now...

Don't use the direct download if you still see it! It holds the version with missing dlls. So sorry for the inconvenience.

In the event I somehow missed more dlls you can use the runtime binaries for the SDL2 libraries I used https://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_mixer/release/SDL2_mixer-2.0.4-win32-x64.zip https://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_ttf/release/SDL2_ttf-2.0.15-win32-x64.zip https://www.libsdl.org/projects/SDL_image/release/SDL2_image-2.0.5-win32-x64.zip

I'm also having issues. I re-downloaded after I saw the last post. The missing DLLs are now:
- libportaudio-2.dll
- libreadline8.dll

darn...... Hopefully this will be one of the last times... I don't have a secondary computer to test for missing dlls however so I'm hoping this is the last of it...... So so sorry!

Yes! It works! Worth the wait.

It was a good take on the tower defense game. There was a good variety of turrets and enemies. The balance and difficulty curve were great.

I really like how the instructions are laid out like a briefing. It's clear and entertaining. Although in the game, I don't think that there's the instruction to press "Enter" to start.

The music was too repetitive.

I feel really dumb but I don't see how to place turrets. I've read on the webpage and in game that I use the mouse, but I don't see any UI in-game to buy or select them. What am I missing?

@nick-rafalski I suppose it was really unintuitive, but arrow keys move the selection, and left clicking will place them. Right clicking will remove them.

Yay, a bit of ASCII art - very nice. The tutorial is useful, to see what types of attackers are more or less dangerous beforehand. During placement the map could maybe scroll a bit? I managed twice to put a turret below the selection icons for the turrets. Good job!

@zondarg ah I did intend to keep the entire game on one screen, although I really should've made the selection icons scroll down or something in the case you tried to put them down there thanks for playing!

I really liked the pseudo-terminal ascii art style! You should also add to the instructions that you start enemy waves by pressing enter. Nice job, especially as this is your first Ludum Dare game :). I also know how hard it can be to not use a game engine, so respect for that :).

Great tower defense game. Love the strictly ASCII art, it look great so long as it's consistent! The gameplay was really fun, the rounds are exciting and have great audio. I just wish there were more varied units to place and varied enemies. Great work

Nice mood to the game, very enjoyable to play.

A little more feedback on what the different turrets do and their cost would have been great but that didn't detract too much from the experience.

Really nicely done!
