Awesome Ludum Boat Race by mvasko2

[raw]
made by mvasko2 for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

Not much there to say, grab your friends and go for a boat ride!

This game is primarily meant to be played split-screen with up to 3 other people, but you can also play by yourself and see how fast you are.

The controls are simple. You swing your left and right paddle using A and D on the keyboard if you play solo. With more players, the game will tell you.

Changelog: - flipped the directions to be more physically correct - right swing will now take you to the left and left swing to the right

Nice little game and good that you got different maps even :) The steering is inverted compared to how a real boat works but I got used to that quickly. Will be back to vote later

This was simultaneously peaceful and frantic. I'm playing alone and enjoyed the experience. I then added a second player to see what would happen and was stoked to see split screen local multiplayer! Nicely done!

You are probably going to hear this a lot, but your paddles are reversed :) Paddling on the right side of the boat should turn you left, not right.

Nice game. Good usage of loops!

oh, that is difficult game. I'm worried that the boat without any persons would do such manovers. Next time, draw a human. Sadly difficulty level was too much for me.

@minibobbo @robinerd Holy cow, you are right, the controls are reversed. It's funny, I had it right originally, but I flipped it in a sudden burst of paranoia  I guess I should have watched a video of a real boat to confirm *before* I submitted.

Thanks for the comments so far everyone!

Quite funny, control reminds me of the olympics games on Commodore :D. I would love to see breaking function with both paddles (when I hold both keys), and break turning while holding just one key. Solid entry <3

I only tested it by myself but I imagine this could be fun in multiplayer. :) I do wish it was a bit less mashy though and maybe more based on your timing?

@tomeks Interesting idea, I might try that out eventually

@pekuja I've actually thought about basing it on timing but decided to not do it after a few initial playtests, figured it might make for a crazier gameplay. Maybe I should include it as another mod or a setting. You're right that it's a bit too mashy, my fingers tend to hurt after a session .

Hahahaha. This was just plain old silly fun. I felt like a maniac trying to smash the A and D keys faster (with both hands) on my keyboard. It actually helped! Which only made me want to do it more. Kinda like QWOP with a boat. This was awesome. Nicely done!

I'm impressed with the physics in this game, each paddle controls individually and affects the boat in its own way. Pressing the keys really fast was a little bit tiring but it's a very interesting way to control the boat. I like the graphics and the paddle movements.

very smooth controls feel fun to play
multiplayer support is a very nice addition

maybe you should expand it by adding something like minigames or game modes

This is a super fun mechanic! I like how you can kind of drift around corners if you manage your speed correctly. I think adding the ability to paddle backwards could be cool. It would help for when you get turned around and I think it would make drifting easier. I enjoyed the art style. Great game!

Cool concept! I tried it alone, but that could be really fun with other players!

Great game mechanics, i'ts very comfortable to drive the boat! Maybe sometimes I miss to push the boat back, and more stats like "las lap" and "best lap". I has to be very funny to play with friends. Very good job!

This is perhaps nothing super special, but I did still have fun trying it. So well done.

Fun little racing game. I like the idea for the controls although I have to say in practice my hands got tired extremely quickly... might incentivize players to hurt their fingers in the effort to be the fastest.

I think the graphics are nice, and I really like the physics based gameplay. Adds a bit of interest as the interaction with the wall is unpredictable and potentially even useful for turning around quickly.

Overall, a nice simple game.

Simple and efficient. The kind of game to play with other people for sure. The control is working well. Not very easy. With better graphics and perhaps some others features (things to avoid on the river, bonus to take) and audio, it could be a small fun family game.
