LD Jam 46 Keep It Alive by brandann

[raw]
made by brandann for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

ScreenShot2.png

You have been warned! this game is very hard...

A dungeon crawl with a little roll reversal; it's up to the princess to guide her valiant, albeit naked, knight safely back through the cursed gardens!

I hope you have some fun for what it is, I wish everyone the best of luck and have fun rating games.

WASD to move

Left Mouse to shoot

Find all the keys in the dungeon and escape with your life (and the Knight's life too i guess...)

If you die, you lose. If the knight dies, you lose. Some extra hearts of health are scattered about the gardens. Keep it alive!

PS: I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED BUT I CANNOT BUILD TO HTML IN UNITY SO A WINDOWS EXE IS ALL I GOT - I AM SO SORRY ABOUT THAT!

Thanks for playing, I hope everyone had a great ludum dare 46!

Challenging but really fun once you get the hang of it. I enjoyed seeing a top-down game like this in the submissions. Nice job!

Really had to keep the knight alive. Got lost a bit. Overall, a really nice game.

Like you mentioned, really hard game! Enjoyed it quite a lot, fits the theme and has a nice soundtrack. I think making the enemy take damage when hitting the lasers could`ve make the game a lot easier!

Oof, this game is hard, didnt manage to beat it on 5 tries, even got both keys :(.

What i liked:
- sprites and graphics
- sound effects were very satisfying to hear (primarily shooting)
- music was fitting
- controls were easy to grasp and responsive

What can be improved:
- there were some minor issues i'm sure you're aware of (knight getting stuck in previous room, small font on some texts)
- the knight could have been more active, or having some cheeky comments (the game is humorous with the role reversal),
- or the knight helping you somehow

I feel like the main difficulty comes from inactivness of the knight.
Maybe if you could destroy enemy projectiles with your own, that could help.

However, very solid, challenging and fun game. Good job on finishing :)

I like the overall graphics. The gameplay is not in any way original but plays well. The game lacks some feedback to reward the player and overall lacks polish (sounds, animation etc.).

Thanks for the game!

There is a lot here to like! The enemies and rooms are interesting, the knight following you mechanic is a good twist, the graphics are cute. I agree with the consensus that it's too hard, but other than that, I really liked it :)

This was very nice game!!! Yes it was hard, but it wasn't just frustrating as some games are... maybe it is just me, but some games are just frustrating as hell and people just call them "hard".... ACK NOOOO
Your game was just hard, but still very enjoyable to play!!!
Very well done!

Nice work! Pretty tough game initially since the partner just follows you around and you can't control (maybe future feature to control partner?) Was one of the sound effects a microwave beep or a car unlock beep? If so, very funny.I had a lot of fun, but I was little confused as to where exactly to go? Also I know what you were going for with the font but it was really hard to read. Great entry keep up the strong work!

I won! Not easy, but a good amount of challenge where I felt like I was to blame when I died. The controls were tight, but then the "lag" of the knight moving behind me created new and interesting movement challenges that felt interesting to explore.

The music was a standout for the mood, and probably kept me hanging in there for one more try without it feeling empty. I gotta pick up SOME kind of music skills for these compos, I'm always impressed by what people can do while still covering all the other bases, but this one was especially nice.

So yeah - tight controls, cool mechanic, great music, and nice art (esp the main characters and environment), all kept me coming back to try again because I knew I could beat it but just messed up... until I won! A good all-around entry, nice job.

Edit: how come I can't rate you on audio?

I tried 3 times and my knight died! Dare I say it's an escort quest but done in a sort of rogue like dungeon crawl? Interesting concept. I enjoyed trying though and I liked the music, it fit the mood of the game well. I did enjoy that you're the princess protecting her knight! Thanks for letting me play your game!

Loved the overall feeling, thanks to the lighting and music. Could use some little polish like some good old screen shakes, and more animation but in 48h it's already a win having made to the end with a finished product. It's challenging enough to keep you entertained without being frustrating, I like the variety of enemies and obstacles and I'm a fan of top-down design. Well done (p.s. I would have used a different more clear to read font :) )

A challenging experience. I died 3 times but haven't been able to beat the game. I'll play it again later to win the game. So far liked the game.

Very challenging, but fun to play. I like the music and sound effects!
One improvement I could think of would be to have a way of givin the poor knight commands, like "wait here" or "come to me" (with cooldown, only active for a few seconds).

There’s a big map to explore and multiple enemies!
The protection mechanic is interesting, it would be cool if I could somehow influence the movement of the NPC.

Nice game, I really liked the little musical pattern playing at the end of each room x) It's is a bit hard (always better to make it easier than you think), but it's a good job for a jam game!

Yeah, I won : p Well, it was not easy, but it's quite fair.

The character's inertia makes it feel heavy - a thing I find a little annoying - but well, I assume that's part of your design choice.

I don't know about the music... It is nice to have some, but I hardly associate it with the game and it is a little too short, making it repetitive.

Graphics are simple, but that's ok. The game itself is the strongest point in your work - which is good.
