Flame Keeper by SnowToast

[raw]
made by SnowToast for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

The world fell into a complete and utter darkness and all hope is lost. But a lone skeleton wanders the barren wastelands and tries to rekindle the light by bringing the last flame to it's destination. On the way it has to protect the flame from dangerous winds so it can power the desolate machines of old.

Controls are simple WASD and and interaction button (Space, E, F, Return, Right Ctrl). Collect wood from the trees and put it into the fire to keep it burning. Run into the handle at the cart to turn the windshield.

This is our second try at completing a game for the Ludum Dare. We are very proud of what we ahve accomplished and are very happy to have it finished. We hope you have fun while playing.

i couldn't really figure out how to control the game here... cool skeleton and super moody but I walk away from the fire and its just terrain I can't see and particles? maybe I'm missing something...

edit: thanks for the follow up! tried again, yeah I must have done something strange--trees and fire both working now! pretty difficult, interesting idea though with moving the fire along.

chromableedstudios: Thanks for trying our game. You need to interact (hold spacebar) with the trees. This gives you wood to put into the fire (spacebar again). If you did it too early there's a probabilty the tutorial bricked, but most of the time it should be fine. Then the cart will start moving and the rest of the tutorial should explain the rest.

edit: I also added some instructions to the controls section of the description.

Really great entry. The frantic management kept me going and didn't even feel that repetitive as there is more that you have to think about than just getting wood. Overall great game could be taken further.

sometimes the animation gets stuck. The moving light works fine and is a good base concept.

Gratz on submitting something! i know the struggle

I must say the scene is really dark, I didn't understand what to do after moving the fire a little bit..

Nice game, it fit very well the theme. I enjoyd playing it.
The tutorial text is hidding too quickly and first time, i had not the time to read it so i was lost.
Also, it's hard to direct the shield.
It's a cool game, well done !

Solid concept, I like how you guys leaned into the darkness and shadows. The difficulty ramp felt appropriate, though found myself flipping the windshield accidentally and panicking more often than not :P it was enjoyably challenging overall. Good job!

Very nice entry! I got halfway through level 3 before calling it quits. Definitely a game i could play for hours if i didnt have so many other jam submissions to try. I'll make my way back to this one once i have the time. All around great game

Liked the concept. But wish the camera was a little closer it was to hard to see the handle and kept turning it on accident

Neat little game! It wasn't immediately obvious to me that I had to build the fire up to get past the first gate, I died a couple times trying to interact with it.

I managed to finish it :), had to redo level 3 and the last one a few times because of how touchy the rotation part was. Constantly flicking the shield when I was trying to add fuel to it! XD.

Might have been cool to have the skellyboi linked to the cart (his sole purpose for existing) and have a button to shift the shield remotely/accurately, so that those mini mishaps didn't happen so often. Then again, might just be me who sucked @ it XD. Also, maybe some indication when you add fuel, I found that I thought I'd added the fuel, and ran back to a tree - only to realize I still had the branch on me (no way to tell from what I could see) :O.

Loved it either way, nice work :D!.

Really interesting game with nice atmosphere.

The handle is a bit hard to control and finally got halfway through level 3.
Perhaps there could be a feedback effect/sound when the wood collection is finished.

Love the way that stones manage the handle!

Hey your game has the same name as mine! :)

Neat idea, but at some point my guy got stuck on a tree.
