The Bodyguard by KynanTokoro

[raw]
made by KynanTokoro for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

7-Level platformer. Escort the VIP-tofu to the exit. Don't get caught by the guards.

Try to use headphones or speakers if you can, I've spent a fair amount of time in making the SFX and music.

Tools used

  • game-engine/framework -- love2d
  • IDE/code-editor -- Visual Studio Code
  • Tilemap Editor -- Tiled
  • Image Manipulation Software -- Aseprite
  • Music/SFX -- hardware ( juno-6, DX7, Teenage Engineering PO-35 ) software ( Ableton, openMPT, Audacity )

I've used my code-base/game-template to make this game. It's on my github page. All of the assets are made by me.

Any feedback is appreciated, thanks.

The controls are real tricky and the enemies are unforgiving. Other than that, this game might be perfect.

@der-finski thanks, I had some difficult time adjusting the camera movement. I wanted it to be able to peek if left or right is held down but turned out glitchy...

@kasalooo thanks for the comment, I was trying to implement too many action in the same key. maybe if the game had more UI it would be better.

Incredible game. Pixel art and sound effects are amazing, and the level design was good. Controls are a bit finnicky, but it doesn't take away from the fun.
Too bad the menu music doesn't play more in the game, it's really great!

Great job. I love these visuals and music. Took me a bit to figure out level 2... didn't realize you could do a long jump with the tofu. But anyway, good work!

Art work is pretty cool. Couldn't go beyond level 2. The title is catchy keep it up.

@hellequinne @aryanjumani thanks for playing! Some of my friend that played also had difficulty issues.. Maybe I've made it too difficult.

When my character goes beyond an x value of the map the entire screen pixellates. Started from the previous level. Is this intended?

[Edit]

Nevermind, after some testing, found out it's a mechanic that I feel wasn't communicated that well to me at the start. Beat the game though, I liked it! Loved the pixel art and audio. I didn't think it was that difficult, although I would've preferred the triple jump to be less "heavy" and easier to execute.

Also, instead of a series of actual levels, is there a reason for placing an empty vertical level in the middle? Just curious about the design choice.

Regardless, in the words of VIP-tofu, 谢谢!

Hi @jusw85 thanks for the detailed comment. The pixelate mechanic was intended, but some of my friends who play-tested also mentioned they didn't get that. I wanted a mechanic that makes you don't get too far from VIP-tofu, I thought it was cool while making it.

The empty vertical level was suppose to be a break or something, maybe changing the tempo of the game? I sometimes feel tired when there's level after a level non-stop. Also I thought it would bring some "depth" to the world, with a very low cost of implementing a level.

You can find more info on my postmortem blog post for my game. (It's in Japanese so maybe use google translate?)
