GREY MILK by sunnray

made by sunnray for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

You are a part of one's imagination and are doomed to relive the same loop over and over again. By the way, you are a cat. On roller skates. So good luck!

playerIDLE0.png

You can jump and gain speed by moving your paws. Take care though - if you hit an object while moving too fast, you will lose a part of your health. If you lose all your health, you will have to start all over.

SCREEN2.png

While moving at your own pace, you will be approached by some human through the power of text messaging. This will initiate a dialogue - and who knows what that can lead to? Reply to this human by choosing an appropriate answer. Some answers will regain your health, while others can lead to a unique ending.

Controls:

A or D - acceleration. To achieve higher speed, use different keys, and not the same one in a row.

A and D - stop. This will help you lessen the chance of colliding with things.

Space - jump.

LMB - select an option in the dialogue.

Health loss can happen only when you collide with objects while moving too fast (the high speed is indicated by green particles). Remember, that you can regain some health if you choose certain options in the dialogue.

Ending:

The game has 2 endings (3 endings if you count the health loss ending). Achieving the non-default ending may require you playing around with different dialogue options and hearing how the game reacts to them.

I liked the weird dream conversation and the art. The controls for the cat are a bit janky. I found that just jumping was more effective than trying to build speed in other ways.

some rad ideas but i feel like the whole story clashed with the gameplay. would have love to be able to control my movement while in the air too. but really nice graphics and sounds!

The controls were a bit difficult. Pressing a/d back and forth could get some momentum sometimes, other times it seemed to catch on itself. But the storyline was a bit funny once I got there. However after I died I wasn't invested enough to want to try and get back to that section.

either your game has a virus, or you itch.io got hijacked, since i got a google and a windows message that it contained a virus

As others have mentioned, the controls were a bit rough. I really loved the artwork though! Just a heads up, and I don't know if this is just me, but my computer gave me a virus warning? I would definitely want to look into why that's happening if I were you.

FYI Windows security is flagging the exe as containing "Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.C!ml". Love the cereal background!

Yooo, another game with a cat stuck in a fruit loop! Controls were a bit confusing but otherwise - this was a really nice idea, good job!

@klaaswag @blobo @irwatts thanks for telling me about this problem! I'm not really sure why this is happening though. I looked at the exe I have on my computer of the game - and it does get flagged by windows defender, so itch io is not the problem. I'll try re-compiling the project and seeing if it gets fixed. But I'm sorry, it was not my intention for it to be a virus, and would understand if you don't want to play it, thanks for checking it out anyway!

@klaaswag @blobo @irwatts I've added a zip file with the game (it's in the downloads section) and I think it fixes the issue. It's a problem with how gamemaker packs its exes most likely. At least, I checked with virustotal the zip file and it was fine. If you still want to give the game a try, please tell me if it works!

The zip file worked fine for me. I had some fun with this! I thought the controls were interesting, though a UI element to help timing the momentum would be nice. I ended up slowly jumping most of the way, since gaining speed usually ended up with me slamming into something. I enjoyed the range of dialog choices!

Audio is great, and the cat is very cute, but the controlls were a little funny. Also you should have added some sort of timer. Because this way player can keep going slow and progress with story but would never lose hp.

I love the cat, it's so funny and cute. The story was something I did not understood at first but I was able to cutely meow through it and get an 'undoing' ending :) Unfortunately there's little room to get cat into roller skating speed and the dialog is sometimes distracted me from moving. Try to separate story from gameplay a bit more and make more room for the cute cat to run as it should! Keep up the good work! :)

That was interesting!

The mix of gameplay and dialogue is a good idea. The art is cute, the music is nice and the story is great.

I found that playing the game normally is too hard for me, so I figured out that spamming jump was an invincible strat and did this while reading the dialogues. Then I figured out that stopping was even more of an invincible strat and did just that haha.

Thanks for the game 💕

Cute little game idea, I never quite got the rhythm right with e A and D keys, occasionally I got a goos streak but wasn't quick enough to jump over obstacles! It surprised me when you added in a text overlay as well, I felt like the diffculty jumped up quite abit with the need to multi-task. I think with a little more balance though, this concept would be a fun little story! Good job!

Nice game! I like the idea of adding dialog and dialog options during gameplay. But I guess it might be better, if gameplay and dialog would be more connected, as regaining health felt like guessing the right answer and there also didn't seemed to be any reason to gain speed (but I appreciate that this game isn't that much challenging).
