Stuck in an inner tube! by UkuleleFury

Oh no! The player is stuck inside a "loop"--that is, their inner tube--from a tragic inner-tubing accident that left them stuck in the bottom of an endless crevasse!

* NOTE: You can use arrows/space to move, even though the game only indicates WASD.*

This is an endless climber (2D platformer) game, with novel wall-bouncing mechanics!

All design, code, images, sound effects, and music were created by Levi. The creation of this game was also livestreamed on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/ukulelefury/videos.

Theme: "Stuck in a loop"

This game addresses the theme, "stuck in a loop", in two ways: 1. The player is stuck inside a "loop"--that is, their inner tube--from a tragic inner-tubing accident. 2. The vertically-scrolling level has no end, it "loops" through previous platforms if you get far enough.

Controls

The game indicates WASD for controlling the movement/jump, but you can also use the arrow keys and Space to jump.

Software used

  • Godot was used to create this game.
  • Aseprite was used to create the images.
  • Bfxr was used to create the sound effects.
  • DefleMask was used to create the music.
  • Trello was used for brainstorming and planning.

At first I didn't like it because I didn't feel in control of the player, but the level design is really great! I kept falling right before level 2. The game has a great sense of progression with how it introduces you to new skills. Nice work, very fun in the end.

Man I really like these "Icy Tower Like" games, and this one was not an exception. Great play on words, a real case of "doing a game that I want in a GameJam with theme that I didn't like", hahahahahaha.

However, just some things that I can suggest to improve your game:

-The movement is waaaay fast, consider leving more "organic"
-The bounciness as well
-There's an "V-SYNC" problem when changing patterns, we can see a line between them

Besides, nice work!

Fun game! Reminds me of Ice Climber, but actually easier to control despite the bouncing :)

Is an almost comercial hyper-casual. Very polished indeed. The major critic is the controls, it could have another option for the jump key. This way hurts my hand.

@doomerismo Thanks! Yeah, it does support other controls, but I only rendered the indicators for WASD, for simplicity. Arrows and space should also work! I at least added a blurb for the controls in the description now. Thanks for the feedback!

This was really really good! I played it until I 'beat it' (I think so at least, the level started to repeat). Some of those last few sections; the all ice one, and the one where the walls went away, were so demanding that I almost quit, but I just HAD to beat it. It reminded me of Super Meat Boy in that regard. Overall, I feel like the game did a great job of teaching me the main mechanic, and making me get more and more precise with it, all the way up to that last segment that was the toughest.

BTW, I noticed that you can scroll the mouse wheel in and out to zoom. This helped me look ahead a little bit (until the camera was too far way to actually make out any detail). Not sure if this was intentional or not, but it was cool. Great game

I'm terrible at these kind of games and so didnt manage to get very far but I found it fun. I like the idea of needing to bounce off the walls to get a little boost to get higher. Well done!

That was frustrating, but it was the good kind of frustrating. It got pretty neat once I'd get the timing and coordination for a level figured out and just bounce right through.

I remember playing Icy Towers, it was a lot of fun. Initially I thought the bouncing off the walls was just a glitch. But then when it turned out to be an actual mechanic I was dazzled. This was very hard. I fell about 150 times, and I got through all the levels at least once, they started repeating themselves. I wonder if I'd kept going something would have changed, but it was already hard enough. It actually hurt my middle finger to use the up key so precisely. Thank you for the brilliant mechanics and level design!

Im not great at these games i kept falling, but i had fun while doing it. I noticed sometimes some graphhical glitches on web. (horizontal lines) might be just my browser but thought i would bring it up just in case

Funny take on "stuck in a loop" That said, this game is *hard*... at least for my lack of skill and patience. That said, I quite appreciate the graphical style and overall mechanic. The wall bouncing was an interesting twist. I also appreciated that you had an easy mode option enabled by default. Nice work!

It is definitely hard. To a certain degree, I was going for that. But about halfway through the jam, I thought it would be better to tone down the speed of things again and make it a little more floaty. But then I figured if I changed the movement, I'd probably need to redo all the levels that I'd already carefully balanced... I think I'll probably turn this into a slightly more polished mobile game, and I'll do something to fix the difficulty then. ...Hmm, actually, maybe basically just slowing the frame rate is what it needs. Then I wouldn't actually have to change any movement reach or tweak any levels. And difficulty could be dynamically configured then!

And I loved Icy Tower! I actually wasn't thinking about Icy Tower at all when I came up with this, but in retrospect, the similarity is pretty obvious! I'm pretty happy with that comparison. :)

Fun game! Controls are really hard, espetially falling speed, but I guess thats part of mechanics. I like graphics and main character animations. Btw there are some visual bugs after couple of first platroms. Overall, well done)

I really like how you can gain height by bouncing on the walls; it makes me want to see how fast I can go. The physics and controls felt good to me. I really liked the map art and player animations. It was a bit emptier than some other compo entries I've played, but what's there is really well-done. Great job on this compo entry.

So. FRUSTRATING! I really enjoyed this, but oooh boy did it frustrate me in the end. I suppose that's what you're going for with a game like this, though. This was really well executed, and the use of the "loop" was very well justified. I was all ready to come over here and write about how I found a platform I couldn't reach until I figured that one out. Super fun - great work!

Edit: This totally feels like something I'd load up on a RetroPie and have a blast with. Love that.

Props for "a tragic inner-tubing accident", lol! I thought the super-hoppy-jumpy physics was fun -- particularly getting extra height by bouncing off the walls -- but it felt just a tad too imprecise. Very good use of level progression, introducing new mechanics as the levels advance. Also, bonus for Godot! Well done.

Considering how fast one needs to react to jump after falling down before sliding away, my major feedback is that you could implement the jump key to register even while mid-air and activate instantly after touching the grind (as you probably intentionally chose not to enable auto-jump by holding the W key), so that players don't get frustrated when they feel that they've jumped at the correct time, yet they fell down and have to restart even (even if they still have some time while sliding, but don't neurotically spam the W key). Also sharing @jarvisp99's sentiment, this feels way too slippery ;)

@scsc Thank you, good points! Yeah, I did try handling when the user presses jump just before landing, and I do plan to implement handling jump just after leaving the floor, in a post-jam version of the game. I did want the game to be fast-paced and challenging, but it definitely needs to be a bit more forgiving with the timing. And yeah, I gotta decrease the slipperiness for sure!

Gave me some serious Ice Climbers vibes but very innovative with the inner tube mechanic. I loved that "aha" moment after I had been avoiding bouncing against walls and then ran into a platform just out of reach. The music complimented the art and gameplay very well. It is really tough but not too frustrating thanks to the checkpoints. The unique levels add to the depth and exploration of the mechanic well. Overall was a really fun game. Great Job!

This was a cool entry. A hilarious take on the theme and honestly it was pretty fun to play. Once you get into a rhythm bouncing around it can be quite fun. Very difficult later on as well though, the slippery ice forces you to use the bouncing mechanic but the game does a good job of easing you into it. Good game design here, keep it up!

I really like the mechanic of bouncing off walls. At one point, I got to a section I thought was impossible, but then I realized that bouncing off walls could get you extra height, and everything clicked. It's really fun to bounce around and see what you can do.

I think the movement could use a *little* more polish, especially since the movement is the core of the game. I only spent a short time with the game, but I felt like acceleration was a bit to high given your top speed, and deceleration was even sharper.

I'm not sure if the "endless climber" type gameplay is the best fit for this mechanic. It's a pretty chaotic mechanic, it's fun to experiment with, and it's a tad unpredictable - as a result, I often ambitiously tried a fancy maneuver only to pathetically plummet to my death and get set back a fair deal. More of a sandbox-type world where you're free to explore and practice your bouncing abilities might have been more fun in my opinion - or even just removing the rising death floor and punishing you with having to climb back up instead of dying. Just my two cents.

At any rate, fun game with a cool mechanic. Good work.

Hey UkuleleFury! Simple mechanics that are hard to master (especially with my bad coordination skills, it seems). I like how you ramp up the difficulty but I didn't get far 😅 Here's my playing it on my stream:
