The Tome of the Ccaizhdi by Artur Hawkwing

[raw]
made by Artur Hawkwing for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

This text-adventure goes beyond dungeons and traps. Not only will you face deadly traps at every turn, but in order to survive you will have to learn the ancient language of the Ccaizhdi peoples.

If you want to suceed, you must keep the Ccaizhdi language alive.

A few notes: - Images in the game are taken from public domain sources (see credits.txt in the images folder). - The Ccaizhdi langauges modified from previous work (we expanded it, but did not invent all of it during the 72 hours) - Plase don't close the Tome window, only minimize it. If you close it, it won't re-open. And trust us, you'll want the Tome :) - I'vev added a Post-LD with bug fixes for some of the bugs people have found. That is not the Jam submmission, but rather a smoother-playing version you ccan check out once you have rated the Jam submission, if you'd like :D

Absolutely fantastic text-adventure game! I wish I could have put more time into exploring the different options and learning the language a little better, but what I was able to get through was wonderfully written and very engaging.

Cool concept, but a little tedious. "Keep the language alive" is definitely interesting. I wish there was more opportunity to experiment and learn the language through playing rather than by reading the tome. Maybe that druid could have been a little more helpful? I made it to the bloody door but couldn't figure out how to make any more progress. The death conditions seemed too brutal, would have been nice to have an "undo" button.
I also ran into some issues with the dictionary. It seems like some of the dictionary pages were too tall for my 1080p screen, so I couldn't read all of the text on some pages. Also, hitting the close button on the dictionary seemed to create a bunch of errors and break the game.

@purenickery Thanks, I am very glad you enjoyed it!

@blushine Thanks! I realized those two Tome bugs just after 6:00 on submission day, so I couldn't fix them unfortunately. There is a good chance we do a post-LD, and if so we'll definitely take your ideas into account :)

Really like the concept of keeping a language alive. Noticed the Druidic Tome menu needed to be resized, but the expressions/translations were a nice touch. Peaceful scenery made it a enjoyable journey. Good job!

Cool idea making a text adventure game! I did have issues with the some of the text boxes being cutting out the words which did make it hard to read but overall I found it interesting.

@nathant @frozen-spirit I'm glad you liked it! We put the Tome entries in at the end and I did not realize they did not fit on the screen until too late.

Good work! Especially I want to notice the job that you did to work over the language in the game.

@nikchernyakov Thank you! I'm glad you liked the langauge, it was super fun to put in :D

Just FYI, we did use a previously created base (still all our work, but made a while back) for the language, and modified it as we wrote the game.

@nikchernyakov I totally agree.
The language and the look of the game was amazing.

That's an original interpretation of the game, and the game having its own invented language makes it even more unique. Checked the files you had in your github as i was curious to learn more about it, and the language seems to be well built with its own grammar and a quite complete list of words (for a small made-up language).

A really interesting concept and a well-written storyline! I know that time limits might have stopped you from doing this too much but I think spending more time on fewer language puzzles where the language is picked up from around the world would be much more engaging than just having a dictionary given to us :)

I did have a couple of issues with window sizing etc. but most of these weren't game-ruining

There's a lot of detail in this game but it's all a bit inscrutable to me! It would be nice if there were a gentle introduction to this, very interesting worldbuilding going on here.

@nikchernyakov Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it :)

@vladadamm Thank you! The dictionary was randomly generated off of a few phonetic rules; it occaisonally makes a few odd words (that were corrected as they were found), but overall we are very happy with the results.

@arcayn I agree that would be cool. Time was a bit tough indeed, and we'll difinitely consider your comments if we move forwwards developing it :)

@congusbongus Thank you! @idyllicmind is a wonderful writer, and that really maded this game shine. I agree about the introduction, honestly I don't think it occured to wither of us to have more than the "Training Grounds" page. Maybe expanding that would help.

@trexxak Thank you very much! It would be super cool to move forwards with this, agreed!
