Welcome To MILTON KEYNES by Lyje

[raw]
made by Lyje for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

You're an American who finds themselves for some reason in Milton Keynes, England. You quickly realise your mistake as a seemingly-infinite array of roundabouts appears over the horizon.

With no knowledge of what a roundabout is for, let alone how to navigate one, can you find your way out of this non-Euclidean, Kafkaesque nightmare?

...

...no. You can't.

Controls: Space. You'll get it.
Play for about 4 minutes (total - don't be afraid to die/restart!) to see everything.

Some notes. Firstly, to anyone who lives in Milton Keynes, apologies for the cheap shot.
Secondly, to anyone who recognises the music, apologies for murdering one of the best TV themes ever.
Thirdly, to anyone concerned about the direction of the roundabouts, I absolutely do not apologise.
Finally, the game gets a bit weird, but don't worry it's not a reflection of my state of mind or a cry for helllllllllllllllllllp

Just reading your description and seeing roundabouts popping up all around me IRL, I couldn't help but laugh just reading your description. Bonus, the game is quite fun, to boot. Thanks for making me laugh and well done!

This was fun! I like the super simple gameplay that ramps up as you progress. The fuel mechanic adds a needed sense of urgency, while the extra lives make it a little more forgiving: perfect combo. The humor is great, and the visuals/audio are cohesive. Nice job!

The fact that the music is a retro rendition of "Round The Twist" makes this game way too funny, I'm even from the UK and have never been to Milton Keynes to know if I want to suffer their roundabouts. Still a pretty good timing game, I like the added mechanics of lives, fuel and sanity as well.

Fun game. I was getting pretty good at it however the longer you play you eventually run into a music loop. Almost like a stuck record skipping. Not sure if that was by design or a bug.

A simple game.... I say that in the best possible way. I could intuitive tell what to do and I just needed to master it, I LOVE THIS!. The art style actually matches the game play as well which is the mark of a good game designer. Well done :)

Having driven round Milton Keynes before, I can confirm this is an accurate representation of the experience.

I like the musical inspiration as well, and how the music and graphics gradually became more sinister and broken.

Great use of a one-button control scheme. Was quite fiddly to play at times, but the quick restart made it quite compulsive.

Played for about 20 mins and got a high score of 7...
My brain is very much broken after that.

Have to give you a good rating for that though, really well made.

Hilarious psychological thriller. I found the gameplay addicting but in the end only got to a score of 13-14. Great compo game!

Well. That was. Interesting. The way the music and the sarcastic mood all came together was really good and funny. The music just had this flavor of sarcasm that was so funny, but even the music seemingly got stuck in a loop after a while which started to get annoying and I don't know if it was a bug or a feature lol. I love the way you introduced new features one at a time; it made picking up the game really intuitive and easy. Something I noticed is that you could get stuck behind a car going nearly the same speed as you. This could be improved by not allowing the random speeds to be generated within a range around the player's speed. Overall I had a lot of fun with the game though. Thanks for this submission!

@stellarbeargames "Hilarious psychological thriller" is definitely the quote I'd put on the box  Great to hear I managed that seemingly-oxymoronic balance!

@cole-and-jordan-studios Really appreciate the in-depth feedback! You're absolutely right about the cars - sometimes the game does put you in a situation you can't actually get out of unfortunately. Good suggestion with the speeds

I liked the idea, and especially the humor. This game could easily be a mobile game! It's fun and fast enough to be really challenging in an addictive way. I spent some time playing and I really liked it, although probably nobody will ever let me drive after that. xD Great job!

Interesting game with scary psycho roundabouts! I felt the roundabout was the right way around, but exiting for the left lane continued to be hard. I wish the game was a little bit more forgiving with that!

Sometimes I would end up in a situation with a car or truck driving beside me with a very similar (angular) velocity, very annoying. Together with the randomness of the pickups (or do they just stop appearing?), it felt a bit unfair. Having to start all the way from the beginning again and again made it less fun. Is there a way to win the game?

I like the way you introduced the different mechanics to the game. All in all, well done! :)

@papaver it definitely can get unfair, sorry about that! And no, no way to win

Haha Milton Keynes and it's roundabouts, loved the joke! Loved your game too, pretty simple, yet effective. Also really hard.
