Turtle Team by welby

[raw]
made by welby for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

TurtleTeam Cover2.pngturtleTeamCap.PNG You are the team on a sea turtle's back. You need to find food for your Turtle. UPDATED: There is now a goal at the end and a shark to chase you!

It was a fun puzzle to build an ocean and try to make units that move around another moving unit, but I'm super fatigued, and need to put it up in a kind of rushed state. I plan to work more on it though, but I don't know if any of the changes will be posted before the jam is up. I did write-up on how I made the ocean out of really hackish bits and pieces. Give me all the feedback you got!

Wow. Impressive style! I really liked it! Took me some times to figure out what to do, but then managed to organized my food!

smart idea, i can see potential in it as a commercial game if it was given more work

I enjoyed the graphics! I seem to have a soft spot for the retro feel in 3D environments. Good job!

I really loved the turtle model! Unfortunatly nothing much to do but the mood is really nice. A music would have been so nice. Nice entry!

Hey everyone I'm making another update at the very last minute, it should be posted up in 30min or so, so please GIVE IT A TRY. I added a shark to chase you and a goal, and the guys on the shell can die.

UPDATE: New version is up. Please give it a go. :shark: :turtle:

I like the visuals but I think the turtle moves too slow? I might not have gotten far enough though. Good job!

Heeey, I made it!

My first time around I wasn't sure what was happening, but the second one I got the hang of it.
It was actually pretty fun to control the turtle, the team management looks fun but it doesn't get much use (that I could make sense of), only needing to move them around if the conductor gets eaten.
Cool game! I really like the aesthetic you chose.

@firewill AAAA! <3 Thank you so much for playing to completion! You really hit the nail on the head. I didn't have time to add more functionality to the turtle units, which were also going to have jobs on the turtle shell slots for different tools that acted like upgrades. The pilot/conductor is the only real job, but the shark is also the only real enemy so I thought it balanced out a little. After the jam, I'm looking forward to trying to do more with the idea.

Made me laugh. I like the style and it seems like a cool concept. Gameplay seemed really slow though (like a real turtle I guess lol).

What I liked the most were the graphics. The idea of building an ocean for a game and the challenges it brings is really interesting, indeed.

I like the concept, and that shark scared me and ate all my crew. Nice artstyle as well!

Nice original and funny idea (go turtle team)! I enjoyed playing this - at first it is a little hard to understand, but definitely fun once you do. Great work! A little underwater audio ambience would have been great!

Like most of the other comments have said, I was intrigued to start but was a little disappointed when I realized there wasn't much going on. I couldn't tell what the shark was actually doing when it attacked me.

I like the idea, but I felt that it needed a bit more. Maybe a mechanic to somehow fend off the shark would be interesting. Also I noticed the later part of the game didn't have the shark attack anymore and I was only able to wait it out till reaching the goal line. I think shortening that last part or adding something to vary the gameplay would really help. I really liked the art, the turtle with the food dangling in front was cute!

That poor turtle swimming and getting harassed by sharks is a charming concept. I didn't mind the sharks as much and I understood why they were there. They were essentially a time limit to force you to be somewhat optimal about how you gathered food. Underwater look and movement speed felt pretty accurate, and the shark certainly gave you a sense of danger and survival. I have to agree that the game could've been condensed a bit more, because after the 5th thing you grab or so you kinda have seen most of the gameplay. Fun concept though, with some more time you could've brought out those turtle personalities even more!

Took me a while to realise that the food pieces were sitting in spaces on the back of the turtle, so making that pop a bit more from the rest of the colours may have helped a bit? Cool idea for a jam, and well done for animating water during a game jam!

The concept for the game is pretty nice. I also enjoyed the graphics. I think improving controls are my only advice. I imagine if you controlled the turtle with the keyboard, and moved the army around with the mouse would have made things slightly easier to manage.

Great concept. I love the 3D art. The controls are a bit difficult but you get used to it. The idea has great potential.

This was really quite interesting. I loved how you went for a pixely 3d look, it was quite unique. I was expecting sounds, but hey, it's a jam. They would add a lot to the game for atmosphere. The little crew-members were great, and the controls were intuitive. The buttons seemed to have their text completely blurred away, but it was pretty clear that the turtle sped up and slowed down just by mousing over, so that's fine. With a few extra challenges to make this a bit more attention-grabbing, this could turn into its own game that I could see playing quite a bit more.

You did great, well done!

(Side note: When the turtle is inside the goal orb the buttons don't work)

Edit: Also, congrats on your first LD game! :D
