Stand Still by Draelent

[raw]
made by Draelent for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

First game, entirely made in the last 7 hours of the jam... Lesson learned I need more time, but it was a good experience.

StandStill_cover.png

HOW TO PLAY: Survive, death comes from above ! So Stand Still when it comes or your legs may betray you... And don't forget to eat bonuses and avoid darts...

POST-LD Update: I am not sure I am "competing" in anything with this so don't hesitate to play the STAND STILLER version which is way more accessible and understandable, or to simply use it as a 30 seconds tutorial.

huge props for making this in only 7 hours!
the main gameplay-loop was was fun and love the eating-mechanic too. The game might start a bit too hard but other than that good job!

This was fun! Nice work for 7 hours!! I liked the interesting combination of vertical and horizontal restrictions.

Nice little game :)! - I was first very confused of why I was dying until I discovered that the levels also kill! - A progress system would somehow be nice. There were a few problems with the hitboxes - especially if you moved shortly before the death from above came.

Keep up the good work :)!

The mechanic is simple and easy to get in to. It's a small game but done really well. Good job!

Yes, the fact that the "level" is also killing you could be made more obvious.. And it is indeed dangerous to move too early, that's why you need to "stand still" ;)

Not bad for 7 hours! This was very challenging. I think a slightly smaller hitbox on the guy would've been nice. It seemed really hard to stop between the falling blocks without going slightly too far. Overall, impressive for the short amount of time.

Nice little game, very open to how long you play for, it could just be a little bathroom break or a full plane ride. I enjoyed the simplicity.

Def understandable how the time can end up like that, but I'm glad you still finished and submitted a project for the jam! Was fun to play and try to keep the guy alive.

The main criticism I have is that it's really hard and demanding in terms of precision right from the beginning. It would be nice if the width of the gaps started wider and decreased over time, or if you had a health bar. Still quite good considering your particular time limit.

nice game though a littie bit harder than I though first. at first glance its very diffident cult distinguish the dart and bonus lol. Anyway this is amazing for 7-hour game producing! good job!

This is a cool game. I like that you have to pay attention to several things at once, and have different responses for each. And I love the fact that bonuses push you a bit when they hit you :)

very simple and challenging in a good way. I like the simple controls. Very difficult lol but fair.

@emmanuel-gaillot Hehe, I had the same reaction on the small push when the physics engine surprised me with this ! And it felt right so I kept it like that...

Took me a while to realise that the green things were bonuses

I liked how the level 1 text could kill you :)

I found it extremely confusing that the "Level 1" textfield can kill you, I kept thinking I was dying to that first dart and that the hitboxes must be off somehow. Even after figuring it out by reading the comments here I still died to it ~~once~~ twice more because somehow this just doesn't click with my brain - it sort of automatically filters out the UI I guess.

Omg... I just realized that what was killing me at the beginning half the time was the "Level 1" text :D Hilarious!
Very simple premise, but great gameplay for something thrown together in 7h. Nice work!

It took me a while to figure out that I could get smaller than the middle size. Perhaps if the transparent "mouth" of the character was still visible when medium, albeit very slim, the player would be able to figure it out sooner.

More instruction would have been helpful as it took me a while to figure out what was expected, and even then the difficulty right form the start seemed a little high.

To be fair, I am now commenting on the first version: the gameplay is simple and quite self explainatory after two deaths. And yet it is very hard as the level of difficulty is high as well from the beginning!

The difficulty in this game is ramping up very fast. In fact, nearly impossibly fast. Kudos for making it in 7 hours, I wish I could see what you can do in 48 ! :) Thanks for making this :) Cheers !

Great simple game. And you made you first game in 7 hours?? Good job! Turned out great with fun gameplay. If course more could be added, but you probably know that, it's limited what you can do in this timespan!

Not bad at all for 7 hours and your first game! It was a little hard to figure out even with the tutorial, but after I got the hang of it, it was pretty fun!

That was a pretty tough game. It was hard to understand what to do even with the tutorial. Thank you for the submission.

Addicting! I like how getting bonuses puts you at risk of being hit by the darts. Unfortunately, I found that the optimal way to play was to keep my speed low, otherwise I couldn't move precisely enough for level 3. Great entry for 7 hours of work!
