Ordinary Human Conversation by MikeSalyh

[raw]
made by MikeSalyh for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Keep the small talk alive! This is a game of quick reflexes and card matching.

Instructions: First, you'll see a prompt card. Quickly find another card that matches it's color, shape, suit, or pattern. The more matches you make, the longer you'll be able to keep the conversation going!

Play it on itch.io! https://mike-salyh.itch.io/ordinary-human-conversation

This was super fun! I play a card game like this. My only input is that I feel "1,2,3" would have been a little less awkward on the keyboard. This would be a great party game!

Great look to this game, and very original concept. I like the polish - looks like an already released game. Music stressed me out so much.

Very high level of polish. The beat of the music is on point to keep up the tension. I was bobbing my head the whole time. Great short game for kids to learn pattern matching

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

@Blondhie: Great idea. Post-LD46, I'll make the swap.

@SneakyCocoon: Funny enough, I spent about 4 years working on kid's learning games (mostly for ABCMouse), but I didn't even consider that this would make a good kids game. I should add an easy mode after the compo.

Great polish! The ransom-letter text fit really well and I like the overall design and feel of the assets. The music speeding up as the game going on kept me on edge also. It was really charming overall.

Great game, It is original and well tuned. I'd change sound effect for conversation for some kind of mumble with random pitch instead of synth

Really slick presentation! And now my brain hurts. I see patterns emerging from the universe. I'm starting to question my existence.

I really like the mechanics! It's a fun game, congrats.
There should be more conversations available.

Great job, at first I was like "this is too easy" but it got more difficult very quickly (good thing). The only constructive thing I can think to give is that the audio was a little harsh on my ears, maybe next time some more graceful sounds? Overall great job!

I am seriously impressed with the look of this game! The concept of a matching game is really straight forward, but the polish and humor make it SO much more. Ideally, I'd like to see the bits of conversation incorporated more directly into the matching gameplay, but that's a pretty superficial gripe. Very well done!

Reminds me of the pattern matching game Sets. Lots of fun!

Every time I played I realized I was missing an important thing. First it was "Oh you can match 3 different things" then it was "OH there's 4 things you can match based off of".

Then I realized I was playing this game multiple times. I like this game. :)

There are raccoons!!! It is fun game. I think it needs a little bit of variety in questions but I had a lot of fun anyway.

@bigtinygames @matt2728 Thanks for the audio notes! I agree, it's too harsh right now. I bet it would sound great with animal crossing style babble.

@mrtroy Thanks for playing Mr. Troy! I wonder if I bumped up the contrast if it would make the pattern-matching more obvious?

This was a really cute and unique little game; it's such a fantastic interpretation of the theme. I wish you had explored the humour a bit further; I feel like in a game like this there is a lot of room for some wacky interaction (almost like a Card Against Humanity setup), whereas it felt a bit bland to keep asking if you want to go for a coffee! I understand the theme is to have a "normal conversation", but you could have allowed yourself some creative freedom by setting parameters to having an understandable conversation. That way some crazy responses would be borderline and add a little tension to the objective.

Interface was slick, gameplay mechanic was almost instantly understandable; it doesn't take a genius to realise that if one thing doesn't match, the next closest should be the target.

Simple but appealing graphics. With lots of repeating cards appearing it became a little repetitive, but it was definitely a fresh take on the theme.

Thanks for sharing and congratulations on your entry!

Perfectly normal human comment here. I'm OK thanks. The weather is nice. Have a good day )

(btw, that can be a good idea for a simple party game)

Interesting idea. More conversation variety would be appreciated. The variety of what could match made this more challenging than I expected! The music was also a bit harsh and I had to mute it. Maybe some laughing/chatter instead for a confirmation?

I love it!! It makes me really nostalgic too, because it reminds me of the card game "set", I used to play a lot with my family. The idea of raccoons having small talk is super funny in itself. Very nice take on the theme  Managed to score 26!

This was really fun! Going in I thought it was going to be easy, but I like how the difficulty ramped up and you never knew which attribute you were going to have to try to match. Really great, polished graphics and presentation as well.
