DangerPet by nerdysl0th

You've always been fond of animals. You'd do just about anything just to make the little critters happy. But the entity you stumbled upon that Sunday evening in the deep woods was no ordinary pet. No matter the cost, you will keep it alive by making sure it's well fed. Not just because of your love for animals, but also out of fear. What could happen if it's not... satisfied?

DangerPet is a stealth game in which you try to get your adorable companion to devour as many people as possible without leaving any witnesses behind, as they're sure to notify the authorities.

The game has 3 endings, 2 based on how well fed you keep your little friend, and 1 being a result of getting caught and the police getting notified.

Controls & general instructions

While the window is resizable, I'd recommend playing in a 1:1 or similar aspect ratio, as the games' text might go outside the bounds of the screen otherwise.

The game is written in Java, you'll need to have Java 8 or higher to run it, which you most likely already have installed.

I am aware of the fact that the game runs abysmally slow. Probably shouldn't've used pure Java for rendering.

How to play

You start in a small alley near your house at noon. You have 12 hours, or until midnight, to consume as many people unnoticed as possible. If any witnesses are left behind, they will alert others, and eventually the police.

Wait for people in less crowded areas with your companion hidden nearby, and wait for someone to wander in.

Controls

  • WASD / arrow keys to move around.
  • SHIFT to sprint.
  • I & O to zoom in and out.
  • Instruct your pet to hide or attack using your mouse.

That's all. Have fun!

Post-jam bugfix

A couple of hours after the jam I noticed one of the endings was unreachable due to a single line of code I must've typed while sleep deprived. I'm fairly sure fixing these kinds of bugs even if they're found post-jam is still within the compo rules, so that's the build I'd urge you to rate, but just to be safe I kept the original build on the page. Thanks!

The font was god awfull. But it was super fun, I enjoyed the humor with the different endings, the looks (not including your font) was great, I loved the rotating of the player, the simle background and multiple maps, and killing people was oh so satisfying, I enjoyed feeding my pet Gleeming.

It took me a few runs to figure out what was going on, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I think there needs to be more clear feedback about the witness mechanic - the first few plays, I just thought, "Oh, I got arrested... I wonder why?" and I had to come back to this page to figure out what was up. Once I did, I enjoyed the game much better, obviously. I thought my little pet (who I named Floofaboo) was very cute, and the style of graphics seemed great to me. The rendering process seemed off, though - like it was designed for a fixed window size and zoom amount. The audio effects fit with the vibe of the game and seemed quite responsive - definitely made murdering everyone more fun.

Game was pretty fun, it was hard to not get too greedy. Proper fullscreen would have been nice

Always fun to see java being used! Art and play was good, like other people I had to come back to this page and re-read the instructions but it was fun. Good job.
