Daisy Danger by Reef

[raw]
made by Reef for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

ld46_0.gif Keep your precious flower alive while under attack from the baddies! Use the arrow keys to move and X to attack.

2020-4-20 Bugfix. Tiny update to remove a debug feature. I didn't get to tune the enemy waves to my liking, but I hope you get some enjoyment from it!

The number of zombies got really big kind of suddenly. Doesn't seem like you can actually lose? The zombies just keep swarming the flower. Graphics are very cute! Well done!

It got hard really fast. I thought the daisy's reaction to zombies when they entered the screen was cute. All in all, good job!

**Wave 1**: Oh, right. X to attack with the rake. Gotcha. Come'ere you!

**Wave 2**: I've got all yall's name on this stick!

**Wave 3**: ***WHAT IN ALL THAT IS HOLY!?!?!***

The difficulty does definitely ramp up super quickly. The art’s cute, and I’m always impressed to see projects made on these virtual consoles. Nice work!

Pixel art is lovely, but the game is a bit monotonous. I can't fight so many zombies with a pitchfork. Maybe it's better to add more designs.

When my little sunflower had only one petal left, it looked so pitiful😭

Cool game! It was cute (though perhaps a little macabre 😂) to see the daisy smile after all the zombies on-screen were killed!

One thing that threw me off a little bit was how the difficulty ramped up very quickly - One wave, I was killing ~6 zombies, and the next wave seemed to have dozens of them, with no end to their spawns. It might have been nice to ramp up a little bit more slowly, so players could have time to get used to the continuous enemy spawn, after 4-5 individual waves - I just couldn't keep up. On the other hand, it was nice that I didn't have to spend a lot of time re-fighting the first few easier waves on subsequent attempts, so it's definitely a balancing act. :)

I love Pico-8 Entries! Very clean top down defend the castle game. Gameplat was quick, easy to understand, and quickly ramped up in difficulty. Great audio effects as well. Would make a great arcade game. Only feedback would be to make the difficulty curve more gentle as it ramps up pretty quick, but great entry!

I loved the facial expressions of the daisy! I was kinda sad, though, when the baddies started spawning constantly. No more smiling daisy (also, daisy slowly lost all of its petals and died, but let's not talk about that). I think the game might benefit from having the challenge expand in more ways than "now there are a lot of baddies" - like if there had been one or two new types of baddies; it felt that, unless I was unlucky, I could handle basically any amount of baddies. I still had fun keeping the baddies away, though.

I like the idea of the "health" of the flower shown as pedals. The difficulty seems to ramp up really fast all the sudden, but I think that's ok. Simple but fun!

Thanks for the comments everyone! This was my first game jam and my first real "released" game.

I made the classic mistake of over-scoping and not prioritizing the gameplay first. I had to cut features and my spawning code became buggy with only 2 hours left in the compo, and I still hadn't made music! So I had to drastically simplify and didn't quite get the tuning right! Thank you for playing!

Love the simplicity and addictive nature of the gameplay and love the art style. Always nice to see another pico-8 game. A bit like mine the difficulty curve spikes at a point but that's just a problem for post compo fix. Overall great job

A fantastic pico-8 production! This was simple but a joy to play. Many Pico8 games come at you far too fast, I think you paced it really well.
