Help magical girl Violet keep her best friend alive. Her best friend Wormikyu happens to be a tentacle/eyeball monster. Lure other magical girls to your friend’s tentacles to let it feed. Can you defeat all 6 magical girls while keeping Wormikyu alive?

VR REQUIRED: Do not download this if you don’t have VR. Supported VR platforms:

  • Oculus Quest (use Sidequest to install the .apk file)
  • Steam VR on Windows (Tested with HTC Vive)
  • Oculus VR on Windows (Tested with Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest in Link mode)

No Windows Mixed Reality because I don’t have that.

Made in 72 hours for Ludum Dare 46 and Magical Girl Game Jam. Themes are “Keep it alive” and “My very best friend”.

It’s still a bit rough, but that’s all the time I had for the LDJAM. I might continue working on a different build for Magical Girl Game Jam, which has a later deadline.

Controls

  • Flying: Press the VR controller’s front trigger to make Violet fly to the tip of your wand. Keep it held down to have her follow your wand continuously. Fly though a building fast enough and you will damage/destroy it.
  • Firing: Press the touchpad button (on HTC Vive) or the A/X buttons (Oculus) to fire a burst of magic at where the tip of your wand is. Hold down the button to keep firing. Hitting enemy magical girls will damage them. Hitting buildings will destroy parts of them, causing massive collateral damage.
  • Reposition world: Squeeze the side grip button and move the controller to reposition view of the world, as if you are grabbing the world and dragging it while you stay still.

Known Issues:

  • Violet sometimes loses the ability to shoot. Not sure why.
  • Performance requirements are a bit intensive for the physics sometimes, and during level load. It may cause a few seconds of lag and very low framerates first while things are settling down before it is ok.
  • Not balanced - I didn't even get a chance to play through to the win/lose conditions during the jam. So it could just be too easy/hard. I only slapped together the win/lose conditions, life amounts, and enemy girl spawning in the final minutes of the jam. I know that the monster continues to lose life after you win. I probably should have left it more as a sandbox. I had too much fun making the aesthetics and building destruction system, and hardly spent any on the larger game loop.

Interesting use of VR. I found adjusting the camera angle a bit clunky and felt like having someway to adjust Violet's distance from you would be nice. More spells would be awesome too. Good looking art and the vr bit works well, good job, well done.

Pretty cool game! I wish I had the balls to make a VR game for this LD, but maybe next time I will. The monster looks really awesome and I liked the flying control. After I got rid of the other girls the monster's health kept going down and it seemed like there was nothing more to do?

Also why didn't anybody tell me there was a magical girl game jam I could have doubled with the LD? ;)

@codexus Thanks! Yeah I only started on the level controller that does the win/lose condition and spawning of the enemies in the final minutes of the jam, so I didn't get to stop the monster from losing health after winning. If only I had another few hours!! But such is life in a jam!

Really cool concept!
Some controls could be improved, like moving your own position - but that's a whole other topic in VR in itself and this is certainly plenty impressive for a weekend jam. :)

Wow, A VR game is super uncommon in a jam. Recently got a VR headset due to not being able to go out for Covid reasons so gave it a shot.

Oddly, it just showed me nothing the first time I ran it, but was ok when I forced closed and restarted it. Not sure if the issue was on my end. As you mentioned, there was lag at the start but was ok in maybe ~10-15 secs. Sometimes lag spikes for under a second, though it is probably more noticable coz VR.

The spells and art looked real good. Though I felt...constrainted by the lack of ability to adjust the camera/camera angle.

All in all, I think it would be a much much better game if you were given maybe a week instead. But for an LD? A bit ambitious but definately respectable.

@rubyleehs Thanks for playing! Could you please clarify what you mean by "constrainted by the lack of ability to adjust the camera/camera angle"? In roomscale VR you move the camera/camera angle by moving your body/head in physical space. Were you using a 3-DOF system to try to play a 6-DOF game? This game is not for 3-DOF systems. What VR set did you use? You can also move the world around by using the side grip and dragging the world (like in Tiltbrush).

Very impressive entry. As someone who is not very familiar with tiltbrush the controlls took a bit to get used to, but overall the game played very smooth, with an very consistent style and fitting gameplay.
Glad to see a pure VR game here in the first place and hope you get the 20 ratings needed!
