Mampfred and the singing, tingling tree by gagapete

mampfredandtree.png

You're Mampfred, the only remaining citizen of Dwarf City. The others left when love-crazed princes started attacking to steal the singing and tingling tree. If you could could only find a way to stop them.

Well, there is one. If you can keep the tree alive for about 120 seconds it'll grow to a huge tree, too big for princes to carry. May then even your fellow neighbours will return home. Without the tree all hope will be gone.

:keyboard: Controls

 • Move around with the arrow keys
 • Pick or use items with Space
 • Arm traps with Space
 • Talk to the tree with Space
 • Quit with Escape

:sos: Got stuck?

You need to keep the tree alive for two minutes. To reach that goal you need to cultivate the little tree by fulfiling it's demands and protecting it from the princes.

The tree tingles when ever it has a demand. It then shows what it needs. For a speech bubble simply talk to it. For the watering can and scissor you need to pick up the right item and use it with the tree.

The princes can be kept away from the tree using the traps that lay around in Dwarf City. Just make sure they are armed.

@onury Yeah, it should show the _interact_ icon ![icon_interact.png](///raw/3d8/2/z/31319.png) there. I just pushed a bugfix for that. Thanks for pointing it out.

A fellow Godot user! In my opinion, I didn't really understand what I could or could not interact with and the tree instructions didn't really feel clear. Also, the "How to Play" screen felt more like a piece of lore than a manual, maybe it would fit better being played after you press the Start Button with the "How to Play" section containing a clear explanation of the controls and what you can do in the game.

@kagerowo
Thanks a lot for the valuable feedback. The first two pages of the "How to play" was intended to be lore along with a subtle hint of what the gameplay loop is like. The third page contains tree specific instructions. Did you went back to menu before reaching it or wasn't that text helpful? Would like to improve on accessibility next time.

@senokos
Thanks. I'm sure our graphics artist @sedna will love your feedback.

Lovely little game. Artwork and audio are cool, would like to remove monotony by adding new items and replacing them etc. like plants vs . good job

Very neat game! I really like always have to move around and interacting with the game. The art is great and the lore is quite interesting and funny. Great job!

A very playable game (once you figured out the controls and what the things on the ground are) and I played it to the end. But once you had figured out controls and game loop etc you just ended up repeating the same move over and over until the end of the game.

Maybe it needs some other random event to screw everything up. Or you could have waves of people wave one being easiest and increasing from there?

Nice little game!

A simple but interesting gameplay, this is pretty nice to play!

The sound effects are good!

The art is awesome (however, I would say the Mampfred should move his arms when walking)

I like it!

@sheinxy You are totally right. I thought about that, to be honest, on the End of the 2nd Day. But we still had a lot going on. Thanks for your Feedback! :)

Nice game, I liked it. :) It took a while to figure out what to do & it is rather hard :D but a good one. The traps reminded me of good old Prince of Persia.

It took me a little bit to get the hang of it but once I did I was hooked. It was really satisfying to see the tree grow. The art is great.

It's the perfect package. Has very nice art and atmosphere. The sfx are nice. The game mechanic is neat and engaging. Loving the simple decals of blood and tree animation and needs :). Really nice job. Love the game.

It was a satisfying experience. It took me a while to figure out how the game worked, but then I enjoyed this tight-designed tower defense. Good job!

Hey thanks for checking my game out! I really liked this. It took me a few shots to get the hang of it. I guess if there was some more sfx for different things it would make gameplay even more engaging, but overall I had great fun & really like the minimalistic gameplay and controls. Keep up the good work, you done really well to do this with the time constraints.

Hey, this game is really fun. Especially the bear traps. :)
I didn't figure out how to drop items, but I suppose it's ok. Art and effects are really nice, and with a little more audio in it the game would be perfect)

it's nice to play games by other creators with a similar idea as we did (tree care) but with such a different approach. i finished your game, was a very enjoyable experience :)

Really liked the humour in the game, made me laugh when the person stole my tree (I wasn't expecting it 'cos I didn't read the instructions). Really liked the graphics and the sfx. Difficulty starts off a bit high for my liking. Great job.

This tree is responsible for quite a number of deaths... but who cares, I did it! Buuut my tree didn't grow in the ending sequence for some reason. I think it just flickered once and then went back to its former thin state (played the web version).
Well balanced game I must say, took me two tries to internalize the concept and once I knew what to do everything worked out. Satisfying! Also, the introductory text with the symbols embedded into the text is quite well done. Overall I'd call this game the definition of "solid" - Good work! :D

Thanks to all of you for the kind words. @sedna and I really appreciate your feedback. I'd like to address a few more detailed comments specifically.

@vivek-sharma20 Changing the items over time would be pretty cool and help with the games repetitiveness. Thanks for the idea!

@vernalbehemoth Thats true, the game doesn't offer a lot of challenge once you know the optimal strategy. We were trying to make the learning curve as fun as possible. May random events could help prolong the playtime.

@siliel Dropping items never made it into the game. To get your hands free you need to use the item in hand. But I agree that feels weird.

@very-dark-lord Thanks for reporting that bug. It didn't occured at my playthroughs before but at the first playthrough after your report it did. I have an idea why that bug occurs and will see if I can push a little bugfix for that.

@dedicave You're right. During the jam I thought about adding an Android build as the inputs are pretty limited.

Conforming with the rules I just added a very basic port for Android. The only changes implemented are support for touch input (touch and hold on the right screen side to move, touch left to interact) and a separate _Controls_ page explaining those controls in the _How to play_-guide.

Fun game and liked that you kept a full playthrough short. Allowed it to feel like a polished complete experience which was nice. Took two deaths before I got the hang of it but was able to complete it on my third attempt which I was happy about. Liked that the player has to constantly stay moving to make sure the traps are going and the trees needs are being met. Nice job.

I like that the most noticeable part of Mampfred's walk animation is his stomach shaking.

Simple, deceptively clever game. Great work.
