Closed holes with no flames can be safely passed through.

Left Mouse - Crosshair Aim (LEFT TRIGGER) (Updated)

Right Mouse - Directional Aim (RIGHT TRIGGER)

Middle Mouse - Toggle NPC (Robies) to follow or go to safe wall zone (RIGHT BUMPER)

To do for post submission:

-In-Game feedback to make goals clear.

-Proper Game Ending Scene with Boss and the twist ending.

-More power ups and weapon variety.

-Balance the game play with more structured levels and character variety including Guards that can damage Robies.

-Implement combat system.

-Expand each area with varied terrains and add obstacles and exploration.

Updated

-Primary aim changed from auto to crosshair targeting

-Some more in-game feedback with some instructions

Love this top down game!

The game looks cool but I couldn't get the character to do anything except run around. :(

Hmmm Thanks. Mouse? left and right click to shoot (right click shoots straight in front of player). Release the NPC from the black spots by shooting them. Middle mouse toggle to safety or follow. When all safe opens up next area.

Oh and have to pickup the "gun" powerup in the first area. Although it's possible to beat the game without a weapon. ;) Spoiler: Get the no kill ending that's not added though :(

It's ok. Takes a minute or two to understand what to do. And the default resolution is very difficult to see and it takes a while to figure out how to change it.

The game looks interesting, but I can't really figure out how to play it effectively. Why do the Robies die, and am I penalized for it? What does the left click aim at? I managed to get through a few areas, but I don't understand the game well enough to progress any further.

Thanks for playing.
The robies die when they pass through the fire in an open hole after release.
Left click is auto aim so used to easily target the enemies.
Right click is for directional targeting so best used to open and close holes.

Okay, tried it again and managed to complete it with only 2 robies dead. The auto-aim never seemed to point in a useful direction, so I had to play with only the fixed aiming. This is tied to the direction of motion, which made it pretty difficult to fire at enemies or holes without putting myself at risk (and nearly impossible with a keyboard). It would also be nice if the enemies had a consistent range and fire rate so you could judge which paths are safe. You can still have enemies with different stats, just set them apart in some way.

It's a pretty good game, just a few nitpicks that could easily be resolved if you want to work on this further. Just use standard top-down shooter controls (mouse to aim, click to fire) and make the mechanics a bit clearer, and you've got yourself a game.

Thanks mao for some excellent legit feedback. I had wrote this up earlier. https://shotoutgames.itch.io/going-to-find-out/devlog/139499/the-process . In brief I mention how I didn't have enough time to really give the enemies any logical design. Everything is just randomized including the attack and chase ranges. Something that would be reworked for sure.... As for the aim I just wanted to really simplify it so it doesn't become about the best aim. Didn't work out that well. I'm a little surprised how the auto aim is not working. When I play and fire the gun will rotate to the nearest enemy (usually) and then a little bit of movement and you should be able to connect..The game uses a default accuracy rating. The plan was to add a skill tree where you could use points to improve accuracy. Hopefully differentiating the mechanics. Ultimately though I could do this and still go tried and true mouse aim... Ironically, I was worried that maxing the default would make it TOO easy to use. The gun would always point directly at the nearest target..
Thanks again. Really good stuff.

Thanks. All five little guys at the wall or dead. Press middle mouse to make sure they touch the wall (annoying quirk)

Playing with a mouse and a keyboard I had some trouble with the left mouse auto-aim. Also the sound was quite extraordinarily loud by default. But thankfully you had made an options menu for that! This game has potential and needs just a bit more tweaking to get there. Keep it up!

I made this with Experimental Unity Dots Hybrid so no web build possible yet :( So bummed about that. didn't know. I rarely play the Windows Build too. Too much good Web stuff as it is... Yeah THAT sound :)

I couldn't really understand what i was supposed to do. Died a few times because i step on the fire or something, or shot, then it seems that i killed everybody in the room and was stuck on it.

The shooting mechanic is kinda odd, i guess is oriented to joystick but with mouse it is strange. Nevertheless the graphics are nice.

Thanks all for the feedback so far. @mao So I gave in and switched from auto to mouse aim for left click (LT) . Never tried to program it this way but yeah better. I'll post it soon. Curious to hear new opinions.

Nice attempt to create topdown shooter, but some moments should be fixed. Firstly, camera is too far away - everything is too small, I can't see protectors hp, for example. Secondly, Protectors posses almost no threat to the player, because the range of your weapon is too long, you end up being out of their threat range. Thirdly, and that is connected with the second point, the bonuses are useless, because you shoot your enemies from the distance. Lastly, Robies AI making this game slightly more frustrating. I guess they running towards what is closer: you or the exit. And when you accidentaly shoot at pit it runs to the exit - you have no way of controlling him because you futher than exit, and he runs right into some flames with very little chance for you to fix this situation. Hope this feedback will make post LD version much better.

@bredian great feedback. I'll experiment with the camera but I do want camera out some so you can see more including the holes... my last playthroughs I did notice how it might be too much range and smarter enemies needed... One of the bonuses is for health and as you get further some of the guards will chase you through the area so speed boost might be helpful... As for the robies that is intentional. The idea is this will make you more careful about just firing endlessly because you have to worry about opening up the pits and having the robies go through. Sometimes you will have to close the pit before they go through by shooting it again before he dies.. The robies are basically mindless but if you middle click / rb they will follow the player instead of heading for safety... Thanks again!

Nice game. The idea is pretty cool. Its mostly good but a few things could be implemented a little bit better. The green target thing moves away from the mouse as you reach the edge of the screen, and maybe make it a bit more obvious when a guard dies. I found myself shooting at dead ones quite a bit. Overall, this is a pretty good game. Would love to see a post LD version because you could do a lot with this.

The gameplay is very cool and logical, it's easy to learn the game in the first minute of playing. Sounds are also well fitting the game. Visually it looks betten on a screenshot because the camera is so far from the player and I can't even see when the enemy is dead.

A pretty fun game to play. I don't usually see 3d games on ludum dare so this is a plus. The characters are so small that it's hard to see and aim, I think.

An interesting Game.
Nice little soundeffects and a straight forward game concept.
A bit more feedback on killing the Enemies would be nice and a little indicator for the last remaining Robby would also help a bit.

Overall a solid project. Well done
