Remember his Name by Adinimys

[raw]
made by Adinimys for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Your adventure as a bard starts here. You will visit a total of 5 villages. You will need to find a balance between telling the true story of the King Andreval and telling beautiful lies which will please the masses. Indeed, you’ll need money to travel. Keep an eye on each village’s interests to know what can please them.

I'll be really interested to see what result you got at the end. Feel free to post them in the comments ! :D

@xdsilentstorm Thanks ! What result did you get at the end of it ?
How easy was it to guess what the public liked/disliked ?
I'll also check out your game, obviously ^^

Very interesting concept, the graphics make for a very charming experience. It does feel a bit too straight forward, some more indirect signals for the crowd's reaction would be a appreciated.
Amazing job!

Really love this, my only negative point would be splitting up the text into smaller points, its hard to focus on it all at once. I would like to see more environmental storytelling that could tell the player what lies would be easier to tell in what area, if yous build upon what you have here that is!

Unfortunately I didn't manage to reach every village. But I liked this game overall. Nice art and sound effects.

Really enjoyed the game! It was a unique take on the theme and was fun and challenging. There was a bit too much text to read between each town, but other than that it was awesome. Great job :)

The crowd reactions can be a bit unpredictable (for example Herenven did not like that I said the king was compassionate, I chose that because the city was founded to welcome the opressed so it made sense, and the dragon slayer camp didn't like that I chose courage) but I like the idea a lot, it feels unique. This would be fitting as a little minigame as part of a larger game about traveling between cities. The artwork is very well done and the music fits nicely!

@fat-cat Oh, I didn't see it as a mini-game inside a bigger game before but it's a great idea (no bigger game plan right now though :P )

Yeah, we discussed a long time about the different reactions as a team and they could be playtested more as our internal thinking is not always the most clear to all players. But in a jam setting we lacked time for that ^^
Glad you liked it though !

@forging-foxes Yeah we were going for more environmental storytelling but sadly lacked the time. That's why some assets are way less polished than other (liked the weapons for example)

I loved this interpretation of the theme, I played multiple times to get the right ending and it was very entertaining, overall an excellent work!

Today I learned that the life of a bard is hard. Concept is great, a nice twist on the theme. Text in between songs/villages could maybe be broken up a bit more/made more concise.

It's a pretty novel take on "taking it alive".
It's like a mini peaceful DnD experience playing as a Bard with lots of text-based lore to read.
Overall quite intriguing!

Definitely a unique experience, I like how the challenge is less inside the game and more inside your mind, trying to decypher what could appease each crowd coming from the description.

As feedback, I'd have liked if every unique verse came with its own tune, so I could feel more like crafting a unique story each time.

Very nice and clever!
At first run I skipped the texts, but on the second I read it all and it was worth it!

In the second run I lied almost all the time and I thought I won (because I survived), but the legend died! What a great twist!

I liked this game very much! Graphics are great, music is pleasant and the mechanics are inventive. But it's the storytelling that I will remember best. You had me already at the battle of the Cat Bridge :).
Great jam entry! Really cool. I tired to be as truthful as I dared and this is what the people remembered of my king:

Wow this is very well done. I'm usually not one for story based games but this was definitely fun and has replayability. Very good entry.

This was a really nice take on the theme, and has a fair amount of re-playability. But gosh, those villagers were hard to please. XD Truly, the life of a Bard 'tis not easy.

Very well done.

Telling stories for the bard turned out to be more fun than I thought. I really liked the idea of the game, but it seems to me that it is almost impossible to tell a story so that everyone remembers only the truth, and at the same time you don’t break your bones.

@circleoflife It's true that it's really hard to get everything perfect. Assuming that few people would play more than once we wanted the game to be hard enough to avoid most of the people getting everything right. We felt it would kind of defeat the purpose of this "lie vs truth" mechanic if you could just tell the truth most of the time.

For sure if it was a bigger game we would have needed more time testing everything to assess how easy we wanted everything to be

Fun and original idea!

I had a slamming concert in Coursart, but then I completely failed in Eisental, so on my way to Herenven I starved to death :(

Well done :)
