I hope you love loading screens

Used to work with my friends, it is the first time I'm submitting in compo ! I loved working on this game and I hope you will like it

Art and programming were realized by myself. Since I'm a pretty bad artist, I loved to search for solutions to avoid doing too much complex sprites and musics :fox:

Objective

In this game, you control the loading logo and you have to load the game while defending against angry letters !
* The faster you spin, the faster you win ! *

Powerups:

  • Repair: removes an impact from the screen
  • Shield: adds a temporarly defense area at the "tail" of the loading logo

Controls:

  • Mouse: perform circles arround the loading logo to gain points. The visible part of the loading logo protects you against ennemies
  • R: restart

UPDATE NOTE:

I have done a post compo update to fix some bugs, here is the change list: - Changed the size of the hitbox to match the whole gradient making the game less frustrating - Fixed repeating hit sound of bullets and melee enemies

UPDATE NOTE 2:

  • Fixed bad memory handling. The game should not lag anymore after longplay now
  • Fixed silent gunners

I love the idea and the game, but it is so hard, I cannot get past 20%.

One of the things that annoys me is that I don't know where my shield ends, as there is a gradient, so I don't know whether I should stay or quickly rotate almost a full revolution.

i love this game. i'm also struggling to get a higher score (about 30%), but computers are hard to maintain :)

This was pretty fun! Difficult too, I couldn't really get past 30-35%. BoltKey mentioned the issue with the gradient making the shield look bigger than it is, and I agree with them.

Very cool game, I managed to beat it :)

It is a great package, I love how quirky it is. The artstyle on top of the real computer photo, together with the audio is perfect. Much charm, much like :D

The only problem I found is the performance. It tends to have some micro lags (which are very annoying if they let a bullet pass through), that such a game should not have. It happens in the web version and the windows version.

Thank you for your replies.
I had some trouble to find a good game balance. I think the game is a bit too hard now.
Yes the gradient was also a problem. Maybe I will fix it to coveer the whole visible part of the loading logo.

**EDIT:** The game has been changed concerning the gradient. I acknowledge that the game is way less frustrating now.

I just played through and finished it. It looks like you made it easier but it still took me a couple play throughs to figure out how to win. My hand is sore from spinning! :) I like the humor in it!

OMG this game is so funny!!!! It's ok for the graphics actually what you presented is better than handdraw or pixel. I like that GregOS System design so close to the Windows1998(which is from my age). Good Job! I really enjoy playing it!

A really cool concept well executed ! I love the "graphic style" of the start, and also the concept in term of mecanic !
But the game was a bit lagging. But... the game is loading, it's normal to be laggy ! :D !

Very funny. to be fair, i just sat there waiting to start the game, maybe a pop up to let me know that i'm stupid and should press power haha :)

Really enjoyed playing the game. I had a little trouble starting as I just sat and waited for the game to start. (To start you should actually push the power button, I know it says not to, but you definitely should). Other than that I think the game was difficult, but enjoyable.

Hi guys !
I investigated about the **lags** and I found and **fixed** the problem. It was a shameful omission of memory freeing in some cases.
I can invite you to test the game now, the experience will be way more enjoyable
Whatever, thank you for reporting this bug.

That was fun, the spinning is a cool mechanic and I liked the balance of moving to load and having to stop to defend yourself.

That's a very unique take on the theme with interesting game mechanics. It's hard but I managed to win in about 7 tries.
The only thing I was missing was a little healthbar on the computer so I wouldn't be surprised when losing the game suddenly.

@flying-dog-fish the damages are represented by the impacts on the screen. If you have 3 impacts, the next hit will kill you

Truly clever idea for a game and fits the theme nicely! Simple but responsive and effective controls. Art for the enemies was good. Fun little details like the BSOD as the game over screen.
Some sort of health or score indicator could help so it feels less abrupt when you lose. A change in cursor over clickable objects could also help make things a little more obvious.

Haha I did not realize until about 90% that spinning the wheel makes the loading faster, it's not just a time thing. Overall very fun, I loved the graphics-over-real-photo look.

Great little game :D The only issue was that I waited like 5 minutes NOT pressing the power button because I thought it was a test lol. Nice work!

This is so funny and original. The gameplay is fun and it takes just the right number of tries to get used to and beat the game, without ever becoming frustrating. The graphics are actually just right for the job. The sound effects are great. All in all, awesome entry.

Ok that was super clever :)

I usually try to play an LD game blind before reading instructions, just as a challenge and to give possible interesting insights. When I played the game blind I thought it was a basic defense game where you block shots. Of course with this thinking, I had no idea how to get the % to go up lol

Only later did I take a look at this page and saw you have to spin the logo manually. Such a smart design choice! I haven't seen anything like that before. I then hopped back in and it was a totally different experience this time around. I took so many more hits because I was trying to juggle spinning as well. It was very challenging and I loved how the game "scales" to the player's skill level. If you're really skilled, you're busy cranking the logo even more, so you never feel bored. Great idea and game!

Funny game, I like how much progress you can make just by spinning the loading circle quicker.

Fun little game, took a bit of time to get the timing right on everything but eventually was able to beat it! Could have used a little more enemy variety and some other levels.
