7 DAYS OF FEEDING by Ukumeme

[raw]
made by Ukumeme for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

PLOT

You've just summoned an eldritch god that will fully take form in 7 days. Until then, can you balance having to recruit more cultists, murdering people, and then subsequently feeding the eldritch god, all while not rousing any suspicion?

FEATURES

Cultist action point system

4 Different Locations (Alleys, School, Park, & Home) all with different outcomes depending on what you do there

Eldritch God Hunger System

Police Suspicion System

Time (Day, Afternoon, & Night) and Day System

Rushed art

MECHANICS

Make decisions at each location through buttons, but each decision will cause you to lose an action point

Gain or lose Cultists, Bodies, or even Suspicion in events

Manage your time as using up all Cultist action points will progress the day further (Don't worry, they come back

Get to the dawn of the 8th day to win!

GENRE

A mix between a management game and interactive fiction

INSTRUCTIONS

In-game :3

Note: This is technically my first finished game, so I know the art is, frankly, a little shit and that everything isn't as polished as it could be. I'll probably revisit this game in the future since I actually really dig the concept

I arrived at day 12 and nothing seems to change. Also your ui has this wierd anti aliasing effect on the text? To improve your game, I think you should first change your tutorial, right now it is too confusing and long, maybe add sound effects describing the action, like a scream when you kill somebody and last thing I can think of is vary the events and make the game more difficult as time goes on. Good luck for your next games!

Thanks for the comment! Right now all it does is show the win text in the story box when you reach day 8 and it just lets you keep playing-- sadly i didn't really have the time to put any of the post-winning content I wanted. (There's a chance you didn't get to read the message when it showed up)

I'll probably take in your other suggestions too-- I might update it when the jam is over
Good luck as well

Suddenly, I liked to mess with the dog)
It’s a pity that my English is quite superficial to grasp the text as well)

This was fun! Had to play a few times before I got a handle on how to balance everything and stopped getting *consumed* for not feeding enough. Like the art as well. The color choices and pixel-art icons fit the mood strangely well.

It's a solid effort, given that it's your first attempt at making a complete game.

I found the text a bit too long to read.

Fun premise but a bit too easy to beat once you have enough Cultists. The text was a bit wordy -- shorter paragraphs for repeated actions could help -- and the font for the main body of text was slightly hard to read. I think you could introduce more elements of randomness into the game to make it more dynamic.

@yeo-niki yeah, I sadly wasn't able to get people to playtest it, so I didn't realize that you could snowball really hard heh. I was also planning to put in random encounters but that proved to be too time consuming. Maybe in a next update :0

Named my eldritch god 'Chad', recruited some cultists, fed them to him, got caught eventually, had fun doing so. This game is really unique and an interesting twist on the theme. I don't usually enjoy text adventures made during game jams, but this one was unusual enough to get me to have a good time. Nice mechanics and decent art. Well done!

I really liked this. Got to day 69 with 4 cultists and 20 bodies. Great game 10/10

Should make winning more obvious but great as it is

Hahaha! Love it! Great job completing this for the jam! Hope you do go futher. Love the elements of hunger vs suspicion. Cultist simulator with Lovecratian tendencies? Yeah- I'm drinking that kool-aid. I would love to see some splash art for a win condition- Eldritch God taking over- interesting how you can really game the system when you get enough followers. Fantastic job! Hit me up if you ever need any art in the future. Thank you for the game!

Cool little game! I love games like this and this was an interesting take. Nice and fun, albeit a bit easy once you get all the systems worked out :P Would love to see you build on this, I'd definitely play it if it were a fully fledged game!

This is pretty good for "technically [your] first finished game"! It was fun to figure out when it was most effective to perform certain actions, although preaching at school and murdering in the alley always seems to be a good bet. Thanks for sharing, I hope to see your games in more jams in the future!

You did fairly well for a first-ish game, congrats!

I really liked the concept  It fit the theme well, mechanics were easy to grasp and the story felt reasonably well written.
Managing hunger and suspicion was a bit easy, so I reached day 8 without too many issues (I found myself with lots of cultists often, so rather than finding bodies I would just feed them :octopus:)

Nice job!

Pretty cool for a basically wholly text-based game; it had (or has) potential to make it more story-based, with branches and stuff.

Pretty simple and fun game, with some actually good graphics for a text adventure game. Good job on not going full text like so many people do. The writing is lacking at times, suffering from a lot of repetition; In the same scene, the same words are often used one sentence after the other. This is something you should avoid, as it makes your writing seem stilted.

Due to the game mechanics and lack of randomization it's very easy to cheat the system, getting more cultists means more actions, more actions mean more cultists, more cultists means more bodies, which means the game can be effectively won on the second day, which tbh is pretty fun.
Still, it's well made, bug free, and fun game. Good job

At the start of the game, it says "the two bars on the right", but they're on the left side

interesting game, unfortunately, by the end of the first day I had already figured out what the best actions are, and there doesn't seem to be any change in this over the next days. There also didn't happen anything at the end of the 7th day. Nice game though!

@steven-c oh gosh i didn't even catch that LMAOO - also, the win prompt only shows up on the morning of the 8th day, which is probably why you didn't see it
Thanks for the nice feedback though!

Interesting idea, nice GUI. The gameplay works well.

Add a background audio and images to illustrate text, it will make the atmosphere more intense.

Good job.
