X-periment by Nameless Ghoul

[raw]
made by Nameless Ghoul for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Our Game

X-periment is a time loop based puzzle platformer where every time the timer ends a ghost image of you is cast into the world bound to repeat your mistakes as you try to escape the laboratory or whatever we couldn't really come up with a story

Our Experience

This was our first project in the godot engine and was a great learning experience! Nothing teaches a game engine to you better than trying out a new mechanic on an engine you've practically never used before. The game didn't end up how we initially imagined it, though I suspect it will give you the feel we were going for. We do not plan on continuing development after the jam, however if people are interested in the games potential we may return to it some day with better graphics and an actual story :P.

Read before playing!

The web build of the game may be laggy so you can download and play the other builds.

We would love to get feedback from anyone who plays our game. We had a lot of fun making it and we hope you can have fun playing it!

Great idea! The game is fun to play and can be well extended if you add more levels. Good Job!

Absolutely love the innovative gameplay. Getting some really warm memories about Braid game :) Keep going, I hope to see more less arcade levels in future :) Best of luck!

Really fun concept! Would definitely want to play more levels, which is exactly what you want from a jam game. The last stage was really hard, and I would like it if the ghost remained as a static platform when I hit F. Without that the timing was difficult, which may or may not have been what you wanted. Well done, guys!

This is a nice polished prototype of a pretty interesting game mechanic. And yes, I wish for more levels too, I think that this mechanic has more uncovered potential.

What would make it slightly better (I think) is if the blocks weren't so slippery, i.e. if you could let yourself be more reliably carried by a ghost block. As it is, you aren't really pushed forward by a block that you are on top off, you tend to slide off, which makes especially the last level tricky.

It was a bit difficult to manage the ghosts. I wish it could have some background sounds too. The noise effect when the cube dies does not makes me feel immersive into the game

I love this kind of game! We almost went with a very similar idea, but it was too close to something we'd done before. I really liked the aesthetic you went for too!

I'm not sure what the solution for the last level was *supposed* to be, but I ended up doing it by accident? One of my ghosts jumped up from underneath me and propelled me to the other side. Was very satisfying!

I tried to recreate it, but the physics seemed to be a bit inconsistent? Sometimes I could stand on top of one of my ghosts and move with it, and sometimes I'd slide off. I think if this was a bit more reliable, it'd be possible to come up with some really interesting scenarios!

Great job, especially with a new engine!

I wasn't planning on fixing the jitter problem but I think I'll go for it anyway. The reason for the bug is that the movement capture doesn't work every frame for performance but we can adapt it to work. I'll ping you again once it's fixed!

@thomas-volpato we added the sounds last minute so the quality is pretty bad. I don't think we'll return to that part of the game but we'll see what the future has for us.

@petter We considered keeping the platforms in the air but that made the levels too easy as you could easily pass all the puzzles using that.

Great concept. I was ready to play more levels. I liked how you made your colliders. This can be expanded pretty well I think.
The web build is OK btw.

Wow you're right we have a very similar game! I should have known this would be a common idea :) well done with the design.

This was actually quite fun. I played the whole thing, and sacrificed a few dozen ghosts to complete the last level. It would be interesting to see how you could expand the puzzles, e.g. traps or levers. The idea has potential and you could go quite far with it. It just needs a little polish, especially in terms of sound and music. I like the concept and I like that you used the Godot engine :)

PS the web version was fine
