Zealotry by TevasLiutauras

[raw]
made by TevasLiutauras for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

(4/22/2020) Balance patch due to the difficulty scaling too much. We have reduced enemy count and increased villager health https://github.com/skerys/LD46/commit/559eb22fa03ab4a14abdc67914aa153fe2dce1e6

It is the age of agriculture, the age of advancement.

Heresy has spread in these lands. No festivals are held for the old gods, no sacrifices made. Be the true servant of your religion, and restore power to your deity!

CONTROLS:

  • WASD to move
  • Space -> Left Click to possess villagers/have them follow you
  • Alt -> Left Click to station villagers in a defensive position
  • F to interact with locations:

TIPS:

  • Villagers will not attack enemies unless stationed using Alt+Click!
  • You can have a stationed villager start following you again using Space+Click!
  • Make sure to spend all the gold you get ASAP by increasing prosperity of a village or buying an inquisitor at the church

LOCATIONS:

  • Increase the prosperity of a village by spending gold
  • Buy a strong minion at the church
  • Sacrifice villagers at the altar to heal the demon lord

Fun, and cute.

Got difficult quickly — made it through maybe 4 raids. Couldn't figure out what to spend money on!

In my opinion, what stands out most about Zealotry is both its graphics and its unique approach to the theme. Essentially, you are keeping alive Ben'dover, a weakened demon-king, by feeding him the souls of local villagers. However, you must also keep these villages prosperous (not take too many villagers from one village) so that they continue to mate and therefore provide the demon king with a food supply.

I honestly love the idea of game, and could see myself spending a lot of time with it in the future. I think that this is one of those unique submissions that a) feels like a game that can already be called complete, but b) has a nearly-infinite list of possibilities for how it can continue to grow and be expanded on. Great work!

I liked the graphics and soundd. Nice little game even though I had trouble finding how to protect the demon lord. Good job !

Cool game!

Sometimes the minions would get stuck on their way to my markers and not be able to move.

Graphics were neat! Reminded me of a 3D realm of the mad god.

Well done!

Really nice game loop you got here. Though I do feel that the difficulty scales a bit too quickly.
Also had a few issues with pathfinding. One wave all the enemies got stuck, and I had to go over there to beat them up.

Really nice entry! Loving the humor and mood of the game :) It was a bit difficult quite fast though! really liking the followers, in itself it should be a game to have followers and sacrifice them haha, congrats to the team! well done

Really liked the game.I had a lot of fun playing it..Personally I felt that the player walked too slow but maybe that's a design choice..Overall a pretty solid entry. Good job!

Very nice graphics and a fun concept. Controls can be a bit finicky and could use some streamlining, in the current state it can get really hard to keep up with the pace of the game.

If you find it too difficult, there is a balance patch that lowers the difficulty. We really want you to experience the ending !

I like so much the initial menu, the animations and models. The idea is pretty neat, but I feel that feedback shoul be improved a bit. I coudn't distinguish between converting area and defending area. Also the F on the sacrificial altar is hard to see to be that much of hint, and it was not very clear to me how to spend the money.

And I agree with Celdor about how solid the loop is.

I liked a lot the art style and think that the idea was fun to play.
I think with a bit of effort (maybe increasing the speed of the main character), and several scenarios that provide you with different enviromental challenges, it could become a full game.

Hmmm, seems really interesting, and a cool idea.

I had some issues which may have been me as much as the game. The first play through either I missed the "press ALT to defend" box (or it disappeared too fast when I rescued the villager), so I didn't know how to place villagers to defend.

The second play through I managed to kill the first raider, then nothing happened. In the end I had to ALT+F4. When I restarted it seemed to work.

At the end the demon seemed to die when there were no raiders nearby. It happened when I placed an inquisitor, there was about 1cm of health left and no enemies on the screen.

Nice job though!

I like that the gameplay has so much depth for a Jam Game, but it isn't the most intuitive. I like that the demon lord dude explains the mechanics and how to play, but I found I was focusing on trying to possess the villagers and so I would miss his explanation. Cool concept!

That was a lot of fun! I did find it a little annoying how there was no way to get rid of the targeting circle without clicking on something in it.

Love this concept but old man's speed is frustrating... also altar is too far away that I can't feed my lord... Anyway It's pretty fun!

My team almost do something similar. As we defined as "reverse tamagochi"! I am really happy that somebody think of that and make a great game with it. I really liked how you do the overlord thing with a tower defense mechanic. The overall control I only perceive the controls a little cluncky, as well of the pathfiding of the villagers. I had some problems when assigning villagers for sacrifice when I came from the south city - they stubbornly insisted in grasping the tree to not furfill their destiny as sacrificial blood :(

Fun to play, cutely creepy satanic 5/7 XD Congrats!
