LifeShip by ndrw

[raw]
made by ndrw for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

You and your crew are stranded in a "LifeShip" after a catastrophic accident of the main ship. You must navigate star systems and collect essential resources to keep your crew alive. You have a very limited supply of fuel, oxygen, and food. Jump between systems and land on planets and rings to collect resources. Different planets yield different resources (fuel, oxygen, food) and some are more abundant than others. Eventually, safely reach a space station and bring your ship to safety.

Each system is randomly generated, and planet surfaces are randomly generated. Use arrow keys to move ship and player around.

Written in Golang using Ebiten. I tried to get a WebGL version but the planetary generation does not work nice in a browser :(. I have versions for Windows and MacOS. Ultimately this was fun because Ebiten is such a simple game library, and I ended up spending a lot of time writing my own viewports, collisions and scene system on top of building the game. It could definitely use some more polish but I'm still proud of what I did in 48 hours.

Resources/Tips:

Earthlike Planet: Food (1-3 units / item), fuel (0-2 units / item) and oxygen (collects from atmosphere 1 unit / 3 seconds)

Purple Planet: Fuel (1-4 units / item) and food (0-2 units / item)

Orange Planet: Fuel (3-5 units / item)

Ring Planet Fuel (1 unit / item) oxygen (1-4 units / item)

Stations will not appear until at least the 3rd visited system.

Awesome game but it crashed when I tried to land on a planet with another overlaping it

It crashed/overheat my pc when I touched the yellow planet/star. That star is legit. I had to restart to get things working again

@Sode, @gamurmakesgems Did you ever manage to land on a planet? Also yes stars and entry into planetary atmospheres make your ship (computer) hot! In all seriousness though I noticed some performance issues after the Compo and will look into fixing them.

Nice little game, giving some nomanssky vibes. One thing, I don't know why, may be due to generation, the ship screen has been constantly going into extreme slowmo mode (win build).

Can't imagine a game with planets exploration which I don't like :) Thanks for the game, wish you the best of luck :)

Very neat! I enjoyed that you had different designs for each planet.

Simple and easy to play! Only two nitpicks are that it would have been nice to know what food and fuel were/ looked liked before, but eventually I found some and things clicked. Also rendering the ship on top of the planets would have been a nice quality of life. Overall pretty good!

Caused a truly bizarre CPU load on my computer, for what it is. I think the performance issues are worth investigating. Otherwise a delightful game :D

Nice game, was getting desperate at first until I found an earth planet for some food, then I could actually continue. Did you have a set number of planets per solar system?
