This Party Sucks by Yngvarr

Let's go to the party, they said. There will be no disc-running competition, they said. Just chill and lemonade, they said. Ugh! If only I knew what this this will turn out to be before I came. What a stupid tribal tradition it is, to throw competitions in disc-running with spiders involved? Darn! But now it's too late to back down. Now I must win!

You're playing as a beanman on a running contest. Repeatedly bash left and right in sequence to accelerate, hold up and down to move in corresponding direction. Get close to a spider to scare it (they're such cowards). Collect notes and scare spiders to score points.

This one was truly one of the most relaxed and productive Ludum Dares I ever took part in. :D

Credits:

  • Igor - programming, some sound effects.
  • Veronika - visuals, some sound effects.
  • List of all used third-party assets can be found in the game. All the visuals (except for one little easter egg) were made by us during the jam.

When I saw the description I though it would be a rhythm game.
Great visuals and an awesome take on the theme. The controls are something to wrap your head around. It's hard to dodge if you can just inch forward and move possibly at an angle to the projectile. I also thought I would travel faster the further away I got from the centre.
I twice got a crash when I retried (in both cases after several attempts).

BTW. how is Godot working out for you?

@secretpocketcat, thank you for feedback! I will investigate a crash.

Godot works flawlessly for me, it's easy enough to understand for all members of my team, so I always can ask @syudzius to wire animations into a game. It's also quite easy to program with its own language, the code is compact and straightforward most of the time. Sure it suffers from GDScript's dynamic nature and doesn't give me enough flexibility GUI-wise, but it is good enough for a game jam. :)

Cool idea and interesting design. I especially like the character.
I'm not good with rythm games so the gameplay was too hard for me.
Good job!

Really like the visuals and the attention to the details, such as the different background. The menu is very complete.

has some similarities with the game our team published for this jam.
still yours is a complete different game.

moving left right felt pretty weird, i would have rather had full control. (although i appreciate the "loopiness "in the controlls, of accelerating to the left).

Overall a really nice game, everything matches pretty well.
design, music, sounds, ..., good job on the polish!

Very nicely done  I found that I played best at 45rpm, as it allowed me to easily run the left side and still get back to the right relative fast. Did at first think I should repeatably bash left to go left and right to go right, but only took a few secs to figure it all out. Love the graphics and the music, all in all a very solid entry.

Hm, did anyone else have QWOP flashbacks while trying to accelerate?:) That aside, this is a very polished piece, congrats!

I'm sorry the theme didn't inspire you immediately. At least you did something great with it! Very creative ^^ Love the mood of the game. Controls are nice but could be better. I somehow don't really feel in control of the situation and end up taking hits that don't feel fair. Although maybe I'm just bad at the game and need to blame someone else for my ragequit :D The movement on the disk is well implemented and felt very natural. All the animations are cute and full of life. Nice easter egg too ;-) Well done mate!!

pretty creative idea to have a beanman running on a vinyl while scaring spiders. The game feels very well rounded and polished. Nothing to complain about except that sometimes spiders would drop down outside of the record so you couldn't scare them away. But you can always avoid them until they go away, so no big deal. My final score was 312 on 45 rpms!

Nice game feel and the art looks good besides the UI.

Pretty interesting game, looks and sounds really good, though it gets a bit repetitive after a while but it's pretty fun before then

This was really fun! I liked the movement mechanics, but sometimes the spiders spawned off screen, and the hitboxes felt a little unforgiving, expecially since there wasn't really a way to scooch on backwards. Still, the character was really fun to control! Good work.

Really funny game, especially the in-game sounds. A nice solid gameplay.

Did you think about adding some healing items or get bonus life by having the certain score?

Would have preferred if there was some way to accelerate backwards (maybe just holding right arrow key) and some mechanism to be able to gain health. Otherwise, found it enjoyable!

This was a great little game! The music fit very well for the party theme, the graphics were adorable, the sounds effects funny. Great job!

Also, the vinyls... I see that you did there...

Great job! Lots of fun to play and keep trying to get a better score.

Take on the theme is great, and it's a fun idea.

I liked the controls for movement, not just holding a direction.. it added some nice challenge/balance to it. Did you add that later from standard movement controls feeling too easy, or was it planned from the start? Either way, it worked out great.

The death animation of your player character is so adorable.. I died on purpose a few times just to watch him fall with the slight roll.. loved it!

@redhermit, I tried to make a character move along the circle on left/right, but it just didn't feel right. Then came the idea we stuck to. I'm happy with how it turned out. :) Thanks for your kind words!

Fun game and the controls for movement where the most challenging aspect of the game. And I'm bad at this stuff :D

Graphics, sound / music and the whole idea where great. Good job!

https://www.screencast.com/t/ZJWgVnSw this game was incredible. It was not initially. I just wanted to use up down left and right to move, then it'd have been easy. But, the joy was discovering there was a way to move around and i improved my method quite a bit in moving around. Pretty cool stuff. Solid graphics and music, even the tune icons on the vinyls were amazing.

Excellent work! This feels very finished. You managed to find a good fit fort the theme. The graphics and sound effects are great, and the music is an excellent choice.
Understanding the movement takes a bit of practice, but once you get used to it it makes perfect sense.
Well done!

The sound is cool and the effects are really nice fit.

The Game is cool and has some small "hard" problems in programming which seems to be solved very good.

I liked the game, its really cool. Well Done
