Milk for A Dead Man - A game where you play as a skeleton trying to keep a milkman alive as he delivers you that sweet, sweet half-and-half.

Aded Mann.png

Control the dungeon's traps for the command room you are bound to, and keep the milkman alive as you guide him remotely.

"Milk for A Dead Man" was made in under 72 hours for the 46th Ludum Dare game jam. This was not only my first time participating in the Ludum Dare, it's also my first game jam ever. I'm looking forward to doing more in the future.

Everything in the game, from sprites to music was done exclusively by me EXCEPT for the sound effects (as such I will be opting out of the audio voting category).

(You don't need to memorize these images by the way, the instructions are available in game)

Edit: Sorry for the large download at the itch.io page. The Mac, Linux, and Windows versions are all in the same zip folder, so if you don't feel like waiting for the download you should just play the HTML5 version .

KNOWN BUGS (which I'm not going to fix as I'm supposed to be rated by what I made in the 72 hours)

  • You can skip Level 4 completely by making the Milkman walk through the zombie facing left near the bottom exit. He will only take one or two hits, but he can still reach the goal and load the next level despite not being supposed to. (A lot of people encountered this one. I probably would have caught it if I had the time to thoroughly playtest, but I literally made level 4 like 3 hours before the Jam ended.)

  • You can avoid the main puzzle in Level 4 by making the Milkman walk through the bat at the top of the screen at the right time. He'll only get hit once, and will survive without being hit a second time. (This one almost never shows up in regular gameplay, hence why I missed it. Even if you are trying to time it right, it's hard, and fairly obvious it's not the solution.)

  • The Milkman's sprite will sometimes clip into a controllable horizontal wall. Honestly don't know why this happens, but it's probably due to me messing up with origin points somewhere. The bug is only visual and will get fixed once the Milkman starts moving again. (You probably won't encounter this one unless you are trying to. It requires you to bring up a horizontal wall with pixel perfect timing. Thought I should mention this.)

  • There are three controllable walls at the bottom right of Level 4, two being horizontal, and one being vertical. The bottom horizontal one is supposed to stop the Milkman from being able to pathfind since it should be right over the destination point, but it doesn't. This is fine, as it was only designed as a crutch for people who were having trouble stopping the Milkman. The level was designed for people to not even need it, so this is fine. (This wall isn't lit very well since it is just barely outside of the light that the two other bottom right walls are in. Most people wouldn't even see the wall, which is honestly really dumb of my since it was designed to help struggling players.)

  • Fire particle effects from fire traps go way farther than the actual collision box, which only really matters in Level 4, because players might try to kill the bat with the right fire trap instead of the left one. (Okay I actually knew about this one, and since it was a really easy fix I decided to put it off and fix it later. I forgot.)

Really cool game! I love the gameplay of interacting with AI, I think that's really cool. I had a tough time getting enough into the heads of the AI to get very far - maybe if you iterate further you could add a visual reminder for the player of what they're thinking (like an arrow or some way to show where they're going to go). The music clashed a little with the rest of the tone of the game, but I do like it in a vacuum. Great job! :) (Oh also really great jokes, I appreciated them)

Any feedback down here in the comments would be appreciated. This is my first game jam ever and I want to make the most out of it as possible.

Edit: I'm aware of the skip in Level 4 where you can just go through the bottom path and get hit once or twice by a zombie without dying. That wasn't intentional, there was an actual puzzle solution. A bit too late to change that now though.

Edit 2: Apparently if timed right, you can just walk through the bat at the top of Level 3 and only get hit once. That is not the intended solution, and should be pretty hard to achieve in a normal playthrough.

Interesting game, I love the concept, the art is very well done, the audio is great, you need more people looking at this game, I enjoyed it, I love the difficulty and everything. Keep up the great work.

Holy moly. Such a great game. I think you should really expand on that.

The story is really good and funny. On the second to last room (conditional walls) I managed to accidentially finish the level. I was trying to figure out what to do and repeatedly opened and closed the wall next to the first monster and somehow managed to slip by it (got hurt a little bit) and move to the end without dying.

Overall a great entry.

I can't believe this is your first game jam! Congrats! This is really well made and I loved everything about the theme (skeletons liking milk). Some I found I could bypass the 4th level without killing the bat so I'm not sure if I did that right, but amazing overall! :skull: :milk:

Amazing job! I would love to see a full title. A soundtrack could be nice, but not at all needed.
+ Graphics
+ Ambiance
+ Puzzles
+ Humor

I love that choice you get in the end! :)

Cool concept! The bat kept freezing on the left side on level four for some reason, but I liked the gameplay mechanics.

this game was funny and I had to use my brain. the only struggle was the darkness made it somewhat difficult to see what I could interact with. The highlight helped out but sometimes I didn't realize a wall was there. I also have no idea how I finally passed the second to last level haha. But the game had a lot of charm and I am glad I actually got to the end. I wasn't going to give up haha.

What a great game! Always love to see such fully fleshed out and good looking games during the jam. This could easily be adapted to mobile and expanded to be a full game. Really nice job!

Nice game! Of course I went for the bad ending and killed that milk man. I mean he just deserved it after all the bs he has done to me in the last 4 corridors!
The music was nice but got a little annoying after some time so I wouldn't mind to have a mute button in this game  The gameplay idea itself was very creative and fun. The little storytelling plus the decision at the end of the game gave the wohle thing a nice touch!

Very good!

I really liked a lot about this game. The production values, respect for the player's attention when it comes to UX and tutorials, the humour. So much of it was really on point. Big props there. I struggled a little bit with the execution of the mechanics, because the time-based element and pathing being less than deterministic made it difficult to "solve" in my head before pressing play. I found myself guessing a bit, or succeeding by a fluke in other areas. Perhaps a tile-based time like that of Rogue / Crypt of the Necrodancer would have helped this a bit. Overall, a really great effort. Thanks for the game!

if you let the milkman rush to the exit in the bottom right corner, you can easily finish level 4 haha

I think your game is really great! Awesome job with implementing the milkman's confusement as a part of the game mechanic! The puzzles were really great, I enjoyed your game the most from this LD so far.

Only part I didn't like were the conditioned walls - how could I tell them apart from the others easily? Some sort of graphic link would be really helpful to solve those.
Also, at one point, the enemies became rather stuck. A bat stopped moving at all, rendering the level impossible to finish. It could possibly be a bug in the way you handle pausing the game.

Also - skeletons liking the milk. Hehe, I see what you did there! :D Really great job with the humorous part of the game.

This game was great! I loved the high production values, and this was a really unique take on the theme. I don't know how you came up with this concept, but I just love the idea of a skeleton lord needing his calcium.
