The Choice of Life: Middle Ages by Xakkar

[raw]
made by Xakkar for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

The Choice of Life: Middle Ages - card simulator of life and growing up in the Middle Ages.

People born in the Middle Ages were difficult to survive, because there were many ways to die everywhere: diseases, wild animals, other people. You will feel in the shoes of such a person and try to achieve success in medieval times, without gluing flippers.

Start from scratch. Make choices and do not forget that your future depends on them. Cope with the difficulties that throws you life. Make your way from rags to richers. And most importantly - survive!

I spent quite a bit time playing this! It reminds me of Reigns. Is there a win condition though? I end up dying no matter what I do.

@kakarotsan Life in the game, like any other ends in death, the main thing is that we will have time to acquire during this time. We have many ideas for developing the game, but unfortunately we did not have time to add them during jam

Excellent game! Excellent graphics and texts and "binary" gameplay!
If I have any feedback to give is to tone down the effect (instant kill) of choices.
Still a fast, well writen game with stylish graphics!
Great work!

Very "reigns", but with all sudden deaths. Maybe a "save" mechanic could be fun? On the other hand I guess there's no end, except for death? Cute use of the theme!

@naddir Very long and very difficult, especially when you do this for three days in a row)
I did it, but I tried to get the most out of myself so that you could try more interesting stories, I'm glad everyone likes it)

@sauerkraut I think after Ludum I will take care that you can take Jerusalem ;)

@tommyflower In fact, most jokes have real historical implications. It was very interesting in the process of reading about the Middle Ages in order to create events that could happen in reality. Although I do not hide that some jokes are just my fiction)

@jusw85 In any case, any life ends in death, and since we only had 3 days to develop the game, death in it comes too soon)
However, after Ludum we will try to make life in this game longer and richer, so if you are interested in our game, follow it, we will be very pleased)

@fernando-labarta My friend said the same thing)))
After Ludum I’ll try to make sure that you don’t have to drink if you don’t want to))

In any case, thank you all for playing our game, your ratings and comments are important and pleasant to us. We love all of you and love our game, so we will continue to make our game better!)))

10. Oct 2019 · 12:41 UTC
@paulsams Спасибо) Было немного не так. Когда придумали идею то о Reigns даже не думали, и уже во время разработки на нее посмотрели и увидели что да, есть схожесть в игровой механике)

overall I like the game. the concept of the game is really interesting, it's more like a choose your own adventure presented in cards. The gameplay is really simple to understand making it really easy for any player to pick it up. I think that the theme is well represented in this name because the player really starts with nothing. The art style is grand, It creates this middle ages environment that I love. It is interesting how you use a type of art style very inspired by the artwork of the middle ages. For me it is great, I really like it. Other think I found the animation you made with the flip card incredibly fluid, how the hell you make that with unity loool? This because as you know I also have a card game for this jam and I have to say that your animation for the flipping is much better them our one.
Really good game I liked it a lot.

This was really interesting! I typically love games like this, like Reign, for instance. I think you did a great job setting up the mood of the game. Both the graphics and the audio are really good (especially a fan of the artwork on some of the cards). I wish there were more events, or some kind of random variation, so it was less of a deterministic path. Still, I played it through multiple times to keep seeing how far I could get and to go back and choose an option that didn't cause me to lose. Some of the choices seemed a bit odd - I'm not sure how some of them would have caused my character to die, and it didn't always feel like I had much agency over what I was choosing. Overall though, I really liked this. I liked the stories you could get by going through different paths, and I think this would be an awesome game if you kept adding more cards and some more variation to it.

Nice graphics and interactive style. I played this game several times and finally found this game not an interactive story but a surviving game. I know little about mid ages but I believe the threats are real in those dark years though they are expressed in a humorous tone.

Very beautiful and atmospheric game. When playing, many of the defeat explanations didn't seem to make logical sense.

My suggestion is to always - and especially with text-heavy games - use spellchecking software.

Super fun game! I kept restarting to explore different branches. Loved the humor. Only feedback is that some of the options felt like lose/lose, but I appreciate that you made the first few "levels" proceed, no matter what you picked. I struggled with this in my game as well (you can die in the first two minutes)

A really fun game to play. The art was super gorgeous and I liked the humor in the story. It was fun to make choices along the way and see where it took you. It did feel a bit random though (first time playing - then you knew the choices), I still don't understand why I died because I polished a sword...

Music was great too, and I think this could be developed into something really cool. Maybe with a bit of randomness to it, so that you can't just know what choices to make. Great entry.
