Flora is chilling by TheShamo

[raw]
made by TheShamo for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Here's my second submission for Ludum dare

I wanted to create a pretty chill game with childish graphics for this theme. You basically have to take care of a little flower. You'll have to give it the water it needs and defend it against dangerous ennemies !

The game is pretty straightforward and very simple, you'll have to develop the flower until it reaches lvl 5. The idea behind it was that it would become a beautiful orchid at the end.

If the flower has enough water you'll earn "Flower points" that you can spend on water, leveling up or to call the angry birds for rescue. It also gains health points if supplied with enough water. The more water it has, the more points you get. Water supply is maxed at 100, like health point and flower points are not capped

Slugs will have a chance to spawn and will try to eat the flower. The chance of spawn raises with the level (very rare on level 1, not so much after). You'll need to call the angry birds to defend it. Watch out, each angry bird will only attack a limited amount of time.

I would have loved to add a proper soundtrack or effects for this game, especially with wind sound to add an ambiance to the game, but here is my compo for this Ludum dare 46 !

Developped in Python, using the pygame library.

Congrats on your second Ludum Dare!

The game suffers from the graphical issues at times and the balancing makes things a little difficult to know what best to do.

I'm a fan of strategic clickers though! It's got some charm! Good use of the theme.

Congratulations on finishing. I can see the well structured idea for a strategic kind of virtual pet here, but there are some issues with the execution. First off, the visuals are obviously rudimentary. This isn't necessarily a dealbreaker, but it would be good to know some tricks to make your game look more presentable. Simple, geometric shapes and an online color scheme picker can make your game look way better even if you have no art skills. Further, some basic polish can go a long way. Be sure that the text is aligned properly in the boxes. I also noticed that the user interface in-game is a bit unresponsive, and I felt confused by the interplay between resources.

All that aside, there were some things I liked. The way that the soil changed color with hydration was a nice touch, and the idea of using money resources to advance level is quite novel. Also, the core concept was very well integrated with the theme.

cute little entry, i think there may be some leaks somewhere, i was skipping some steps in the loop i think, like, from what i could see, I was doing 2-3 ticks at a time, also you should reset your variables when you restart the game, i dont know how you check your hit points but i had to tick down to -14 to lose, and when i restarted i did not have enough hit points to survive long enough to get my first can of water.

Some music would do this kind of game good as it's pretty slow paced. Also i did not realise the bugs where bugs so i let them get out of control haha. maybe some basic animations for the bugs would make them clearer.

I dont know if it was a bug, but in my third run i stopped gaining Flower points.

Cute little game! Good use of the theme. Would be better if the mechanics were a little more intuitive in-game, it was hard to understand without reading the instructions. Also at low water, you seemingly get no points which was a bit confusing and frustrating at first, since you have no way of coming back from that. I noticed that the highlight on the buttons only changes when the whole game ticks, if those updated when the mouse moved the UI would feel better I think. Still a cool experience, keep it up!

I like the concept. This game would really benefit from some polish - @quinn-patrick has some great suggestions for simple things that are valuable to keep in mind.

Congratulations :confetti_ball: on your little game.
I love that you wrote it in Python.

Try not to mix your graphical styles next time and keep the hand drawn one.
I can see that you have improved to the first game.

Keep it up and as long as you enjoy it.

Small note to other reviewers: Run this in Python3.

I like the simplistic art style, since it's cute.

Cute game. A little challenging though in the beginning, not knowing how the values change. Good job anyways!

I'm afraid that on my 1366x768 laptop screen, I couldn't click the buttons at the bottom of the screen!! I don't think I have any other monitors at home that I can successfully play the game on ;_;

Looks like a good submission and a solid concept even if I couldn't quite interact with it, haha...

good idea, but game has no challenge at all. just buy bird, when it expires, buy water, if wet lower than 70, and buy growth, when you have enough flower points.

some elements don't fit:

It was a chill game. Pretty hard at first, but then I got to 3rd of 4th form on second try. Pretty good balancing, though I wish you could see when the bird is about to expire!
