The Glimmering Woods by Kyrio

[raw]
made by Kyrio for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

illuecrantitre.png

Summary

On a tiny island off the coast of Great Buttern

Lay the town of Pattyport and its starchy mansions

Good-natured were its people, but at an odd they'd turn

To mistrust, gossip and superstition.

Among those villagers was a lad of little fear

Who one day wandered into the woods up north

With wit and courage, yet he would not go forth

For a wounded creature was soon to appear.

Take care of a mysterious blue-eyed creature that might just make your fellow villagers lose patience, in this top-down adventure by comic book artists NoTruche and Pekolio, animator Un ornithorynque dans la piscine and programmer Kyrio.

All graphics, designs and code were created during the Jam, with the help of the BitPotion font by Joeb Rogers and music by Jason Shaw.

We used such awesome software as Godot, Aseprite and Tilesetter.

Controls

  • Arrow keys: Move your character
  • Space: Interact (talk, progress in dialogue, etc.)

Really enjoyed that and would love to see more. Really liked the art work; made me think of the old Sierra games (seemed to be a mix of SCI and AGI style in places).

This game is gorgeous. Art, music, world building - amazing. For now there's not much you can do, but this can be a great game in the future.

J'aime beaucoup l'idée et les graphismes, c'est vraiment dommage que vous n'ayez pas eu assez de temps pour continuer, j'espère que vous aurez la motivation et l'occasion de sortir une version plus complète :D

The art of the game is really nice, and I enjoyed talking to the other NPCs, although the dialogue could be a little faster. The audio fits the game really well too.

It was unfortunate that you guys ran out of time but I really hope I can see more of the story in the future. This game has a lot of potential!

SUDDEN ENDING IS SUDDEN! I laughed hard at this, even though I didn't play your game (I was watching a stream), I loved the effort on the narrative side and I wish you had more time to develop your story, even tho I have to say that at the moment it doesn't actually present a challenge, so apart from enjoying the story there's not much to do. But this is a good start for something!

@hyunkelw you are right. We hope to make a more complete and more challenging version in the future :)

Really nice arts, good music (can't note audio though), good dialogues and intrigue !

Small details, but when you talk to a NPC, they should face the player, and the player should not be in a walking animation anymore, it would make more sense

@snowirbis Yeah that's true. It's on the list about things to change for the long version =).

You can't note the audio because it's an open source sample. Since we did not created it, we don't want to take credits or point about it. But we are glad people seems to find the music fitting =)

@ponypen i linked your game just a kick note here because i don’t think we can write mp here. Your instagram link is broken. Using le @ it’s like you tagged someone on the site, so it doesn’t link to instagram.

@convg thank you ! The story in the game is way shorter than the one we initially plan to. Classi jam problem I guess. We hope to lake a post jam more complete version :)

@petrifiedapple the palette was created during the jam :) by Pekolio. We are glad you enjoyed the cuteness of the game.

@keln thank you ! Your gale is cool too :) it’s out of the box and smart! :)

@spawnie Thank you.:) we plan to! The art in your game is cool characters are kinda douchy tho xD

@amkingtrp thank you. I didn.t know Sierra games ! Thank for the ref! And nice puzzle in you game too ;)

@zuezazon thank you ! Yeah we tried and enjoyed it even tho it was kinda tough to put in place, we are happy we have a beginning a middle and a end. Short yeah but its a jam gale so... I saw your gale on pixel joint! Very nice art and i like the mood too.

Nice work! The art gave me serious Deltarune/Undertale vibes, and the music was real pleasant to listen to~

From a narrative perspective, I really like the personalities of the town inhabitants——but I felt like many of them could say the same thing in fewer words for a stronger effect.

The graphics were very well done and I liked the Animal crossing vibes with all of the non-human characters. It is a shame that you ran out of time because I liked the story and would enjoy seeing what happens next. The gameplay was simple and felt good to walk around and talk to people. My only suggestion would be allowing the player to hit space and it skips to the end of the message instead of going to the next one. I wanted to read faster and the slow text scroll got in the way of that sometimes. Overall this was a nice game with a good narrative and great visuals.

Ha, well that was surprisingly abrupt, but I relate so hard to that comment about needing to sleep. Writing dialogue for all those characters is time consuming stuff. XD

Going from what there was, this seems like a really cute idea. Loved the animations, and the flash of mystery with that foxy creature at the end who was visiting your wounded animal friend in the hut. It looks like you had something pretty definite in mind story wise, so I hope you have time to develop it further.

This world has something... and its good. A bit more time and this could be a really fun adventure game. The collision feels weird but its not that important. Did you use viewport scaling; it feels that way. Try using the 2d scaling option and see if you like it.

This is great! The graphics is beautiful and elaborate. Especially I love the sea waves. Though it's sad that you couldn't finish in time, you guys did a great job!

@alexandroskap Thanks for the feedback! I tried 2d scaling on your suggestion, and it does seem to improve scrolling in some cases. I initially dismissed it because the docs recommended viewport for pixel-perfect games, I'll try to dig deeper.

@notan-lemon Thank you! @un-ornithorynque-dans-la-piscine made those sea tiles. She wouldn't make them static so I had to find a way to integrate animated tiles, but Godot had my back!

@vesper What we had in mind was hard to achieve in three days, as we would soon find out, but we're glad we managed to give you a glimpse with that final animation. Actually, we were almost done with animations for the story, but as we couldn't get gameplay ready for the second part of the game, we had to cut before that. I hope we can go back to it!

@notan-lemon @kyrio yeas. Waves move. Its a fact of life guys :) plus it was cool to do !! =)

@vesper for the reccord the foxy crewture is a fennec. A bit orange tho. And the other one is based on a jerboa (a cute mouse/kangaroo looking creature living in the desert (like the fennec) :))

Short but lovely! I loved the graphics, and the music choice fit well the setting.

The story kept me interested, specially as I started talking to the NPCs. After all the fearmongering I was super stoked into going back into the woods

There were some collision issues between the characters, but other than that it all felt pretty solid.

I hope you can continue it so you can implement your full vision. Congrats!

Oh man I wished it was longer! The graphics and sound were awesome, but it didn't feel that connected to the theme. Maybe if there was a time constraint on taking care of the animal, it'd connected the gameplay with the theme.
