Dance n' Die by rodel77

[raw]
made by rodel77 for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Defend the villager and steal his coins, dance with the monsters and kill them... now you are the real monster... put traps so nobody can hurt your monstrosity.

Are you sure you have the braveness to enter this horrifying dungeon? Some of the bestest disco dancers have tried, but died on the try... at least you will get a nice dance and that is the only matter.

For a more terrorific experience and a complete feel of a real disco dance you should use ALT + Enter, don't be scared its just fullscreen (only for the real disco warriors)

the game is great but the main mechanic is a bit hard to understand at first

At first I guess the control is the same as Crypt of the NecroDancer. It is cool to found out that I can use my mouse click to kill enemy. But it is tough to buy something from the store as I have to click enemies first.

Cute game. I included it in my Ludum Dare 46 compilation video series, if you want to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/BkQLNdwwwdM

@terderrer @huang-sicheng I know about necrodancer but never played, at first it was just a dungeon-crawler game but the disco feel was like too much obvious haha

You don't really need to click enemies to purchase stuff, only the villager a couple of times, also traps are not mean to be brought in like "preparation time" but meanwhile in the gameplay, however that is a design decision that could be tweaked a little bit.

This felt a bit too close to Crypt of the Necrodancer.

Cool game, at first I tried to move the villager using the arrow keys and was very confused lol

I really like this, It's not like many things I've see and you need to make interesting decisions to stay alive, but I feel like it escalates a little too quickly? Before long I feel so swamped by approaching enemies it felt like there was nothing I could do. I guess ease me into it a little bit more carefully, but otherwise great job!

Really happy to see so much free software being used to make games!!!

Like the others, it tooks me a while to understand the mechanics, probably due to biased expectiation towards Crypt of the Necrodancer.

I missed shortcuts to select traps to place. It seems I can't "cancel" a placement either.

However, I like that the screen becomes more colorful as you match the rhythm. Very nice feedback!

Nice concept overall, and the gameplay loop is pretty fun. My biggest issue is how quickly the difficulty ramps up. Whatever I do, I can't seem to be able to go further than placing a few traps and clicking on enemies a few times. I see someone mentioned Necrodancer, and I sorta like the idea that maybe clicking to the beat would deal more damage, but that would only really work if the monsters only move to the beat, which doesn't seem to be the kind of game you were going for. Personally, I like the more puzzley aspect of having to think a bit before you decide what to click on, just unfortunate that I can't get very far, haha.

Very fun little game, I agree that the difficulty ramps up a little too fast though, it's hard to come up with a decent strategy before you're already being overwhelmed by monsters. I really like the idea though and the game feel is on point

@silas-the-dev never played necrodancer but as far as I know the mechanics are completely different.

@kazuo256 well, there is no feedback when you match the rhythm, that colors are just oscillating forever haha, but its interesting how it gave you that impression! I wish I could added all the "better life quality features" but there was no time to do so :/. Finally, didn't really notice the amount of open sourced software I use, I think I am just used to it and feels very nice :)

@offz I really enjoy games where you have to think well and not fast, glad you noticed it. I really like the idea of a critial hit whenever you match the beat and I think it would probably be ok with the current thing.

### About the difficulty:
The main issue of the difficulty probably was the lack of testing; didn't test very well the game and did sometimes with infite money trying to focus more on the feel/functionality/design more than the difficulty. After playing now I see that it is insane, so I am going to release a post-jam build that let enemies deposit some money after die so new players can enjoy the game in a better way.

Thanks everyone for the feedback, remember to test and play your games as priority #1

Jamming super hard on the tunes. And kudos for making a rhythm game for the jam. I had a fun time clicking monsters to the beat. Do wish there was a bit more feedback when you're play on beat though.

Nice work!

Highly underrated! This is so fun and unique. The pixel art is fantastic. I love the simple mechanics and addicting gameplay. One of my favorites so far!

The game looks good, but it's not quite clear how you're supposed to play it. You can just click constantly on enemies and there's no penalty for being offbeat. Too bad it's quite unbalanced as well. The health feels a bit too "cheap", while making traps, which are far more expensive and only affect certain enemies, a bit pointless. But the music is great!
