Move fast to keep the flame alive!

prop1.png

  • Click to pick up or drop objects.
  • Right click / Z / X to rotate.
  • Touch objects to spread the fire.
  • Keep fire alive for as long as possible.

Built in 2 days for Ludum Dare 46, April 2020. Theme: Keep It Alive.

Execution is definitely quite rough, but I think the idea has some potential.

Made about 10 tries, that was very fun and original while remaining in the Ludum theme.
That would have been great is burnt object were removed after some times but I really liked it :)

Cool game with nice burning effects and so on! I felt that the parts of each object should have the fire spread throughout them over a longer period of time, and I also noticed that not everything caught fire easily (realistic I guess). I liked the simplicity but did find it a bit hard (maybe it was the way I was playing it). Pretty cool game though and I enjoyed it! (Highscore: 11 seconds)

The beginning is great. It forces you to think about how to place pieces to maximize burning time and minimize space taken. Towards the end, the pieces were dropped fast enough that I could just drag it onto the fire mindlessly. If the beginning were carried through the whole game, it would be great. Burnt pieces should be removed after a little bit.

Extremely fun game, I think the concept is brilliantly executed. The only bug I noticed was that logs sometimes start flying across the room if you try to rotate them while they are pressed against a corner.

Nice, would defeintely add some more pieces (shapes and materials ) and maybe have sequenced or an inventory of parts that you start with, so you have to build the perfect fire path?

And with different marterials, with a real fire, if you throw on stuff like paper/card that will bring back flames quickly if the fire has died down ( but is still hot enough to ignite paper ) and stuff like logs etc that take longer to catch fire, but equally, stay on fire longer.

.. and while not realistic.. A 'health' bar on wood would be cool.

This was fun! As others said, it would be nice if the burned pieces eventually were removed, although I do think it creates some gameplay to have them stay for at least a bit and cause you to have to take them into account when moving unburned wood around. Also yeah, things speed up so much as you go on that I feel like rotating things was only really useful at the very beginning, after which i could just be moving things around quickly and keep the fire going indefinitely as long as all the burned stuff didn't get in the way. Overall nice job though, definitely fits the theme!

Great use of the theme. This is a really good idea that could be polished and expanded on. I got to 72 seconds.

I got to 90 seconds!
Great topic. Using fire in the game is a difficult challenge.
But I would like the burnt pieces to disappear at least over time.

This is an innovative and fun idea. I first thought of the wood sticks as a campfire but later I found they should be used as tools to keep the fire alive. The gameplay is solid and nice that can be extended to a full game with more levels and different types of materials.

Simple but fun game. It is easy to control, the sound is good, the fire spreads in a slow but steady pace so all in all it is a pretty solid game.
Well done!

That was a surprisingly fun game, though I did bump into quite a significant amount of gameplay related problems. The biggest one was the "extinguished" objects started getting into the way of blocking objects that have already fallen. As I had difficulty clicking on them, it was difficult to pick them up. It would have been nice to add either an animation, or a visible effect that something clicked is carried so the user knows when to move the mouse. I didn't end up using the rotate feature that much, as while useful, there isn't much time to keep the flame alive for me to actually care utilizing it. Some strategies I tried include multi-branching flames, which ended poorly, and just keeping a single flame alive, which proved to be much more fruitful.

I noticed your entry was a few votes short, so I played it on Twitch and gave some live feedback. VOD is up on Youtube, if you'd like to see it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi6oja9yekY

This is honestly pretty brilliant? Had a satisfying, frantic feel very like playing Tetris, despite having very different mechanics! Made it to about 3 minutes in before I flubbed it. The rising difficulty of having more burnt wood cluttering the space, and more fuel dropping down spreading flames and messing up your plans, made for a nice challenge! Even with just 2 wood pieces with different properties/burn rates, there was a good amount of strategy at play here. I really enjoyed this! Thanks for making this.
