Save Our Ship by Laurari

[raw]
made by Laurari for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Introduction

SOS, SOS!!
Here the crew of LERJ-20 interstellar spacecraft.
We are adrift in one escape pod.
We managed to leave the ship after a terrible explosion that destroyed it.
There is only few of us right now. The other ones weren't that lucky.
Our situation is critical: we have very little oxygen and the pod energy is limited.
We are lost at the Sector 37 asteroid belt.
We cannot locate the nearest base of the Federation. Please, help us!
Save our ship!!

Here you can see the introduction as it is shown in the game:

I like the mood/theme of this game.

Gameplay is kinda hard, but I want to retry everytime when I hit an asteroid, haha

nice idea. maybe it could be a bit more forgiving to make it even more fun?

Thanks @the-martijn and @jasonsumm1 !! We love a good challenging game, but for sure we need to add some levels of difficulty xD

I think it would be cool if there were something to shoot astroids because they already split when collide each other but nevertheless solid gameplay and pretty nice graphics, good job!

A nice take on the theme. I liked the intro animation, it's not often you see those on jam games so it's cool to see. I like the particle effects, especailly when you explode! As noted above, it is a little hard to play, so could be more forgiving.

Nice Entry! The introduction is really nice: audio and graphically! Good job for trying the voice acting! The gameplay is pretty tricky, I tried several times without reaching the goal. Just a question of balance. Welcome in the LD community for those whith their first shot. ;)

A bit too hard, but nice entry! The intro was really cool, I wish I could rate you in the mood category.

The voice acting at the beginning of the game really helps to put every thing in context. The game is fun although I think it maybe is too challeging. I did not understand the goal of the game until I watched the video on this page. Maybe you could state the goal more explicit. Other than that, well done!

Pretty cool game! I like the graphics and the sound is great too. I found it a bit difficult (didn't managed to get to the station) but had lots of fun while doing it!
And congrats for the intro, it is awesome!

I really like the mechanic of picking up the modules to shield yourself and give you oxygen and energy. A pretty hard game, but it was all the more satisfying to complete

Fun well rounded entry. Audio was nice. Wont rate graphics. Maybe you should opt out of Graphics next time if you dont make the assets yourself.

Not bad, but I found it a bit counter intuitive that 'S' was stop rather than retro, i think perhaps it would be better if holding 'S' allowed your ship to reverse.

@wuceng thanks!!! we put the graphics part as we did a mix between Kenney assets and other stuff regarding VFX made by us (level design, particle systems, radar, space...)

I see an insane amount of polish in this game, good job! Maybe the transtition between music loops could be a bit more seamless.
Other than that, I really enjoyed your entry ;)

Nice game, it is a little hard for me, but i like games with challenge.

@laurari You really need to opt out of the graphics category, I'm 95% sure you can still do it now. I'm not sure you realize it but it's technically cheating to use assets you didn't make yourself and not opt out of the respective category.

Besides for this it's a really fun game - I love me some Newtonian physics!

Edit: Thanks for editing laurari! It's a super common mistake that I made myself during my first jam. Again, great game :)

Thanks @gurkenlabs and @imod !! Challenges are always good if they're not impossible

@burneraccount just removed it, didn't know I still could change it!! thanks! Part of the graphics were ours, thats why we leaved it in first place... but just not to violate any rule, we've taken it out! next time we'll take our time (or add someone in the team) to do our own assets

Good concept... nice audio. Personally, I would've preferred the challenge to be based on the speed and number of obstacles -- and *not* on based an inability to control the ship. (Or maybe there's a trick to the controls that I never figured out?) Anyway, good job!

Thanks for the feedback @hellequinn !! Both the speed and the number of obstacles are fixed, but for sure we need to double check that as it is quite high!! About the control of the ship, did you use the "S" as a break?? We find it REALLY necessary to avoid the asteroids, as well as using the modules as blocks
