Platdaughter by TheBaecun

[raw]
made by TheBaecun for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

You're any average Joe, the platformer character. But... it just so happens that it's "Bring your daughter to work" day, so you take your little one on a ride along. Remember to protect her!

Creative concept, protecting a sidekick in a platformer. Sadly I couldn't handle the controls, running and jumping with one hand and aiming with the other... The large collision boxes on the spikes also hit me way too often, even when I was already standing on a platform. Try to make the hitboxes advantageous to the player, even if that makes them less accurate. Music in a compo entry is always nice to hear!

@somethinboutgames Thanks for your feedback! I do have a tendency to make games that lean on the unforgiving side, so I'll totally take that in consideration in the future. I don't really like to make easy games, but it's key to strike a balance, which clearly is not always the easiest thing for me :grimacing:

It's quite challenging and the concept is nice. I found the fact that my gun looks exactly like my arm initially extremely confusing.

Also, my daughter got stuck behind a wall (in a place that maybe I wasn't supposed to jump to). She never got out of there, just jumped up sometimes. But she was still admiring me and everything, so I had a easy mode

@fabula-rasa usually, the daughter follows your x-axis positions, so if you were to jump back, in theory, everything would be back to "normal", but nevertheless, I should put some checks to prevent this type of behaviour. Thanks for the feedback!

And about the arm thing... that was a last minute panic decision because I totally forgot to create a sprite for the gun, and for some reason my exhausted brain found it hilarious :D

The difficulty is a bit over the top, same with the instadeath spikes. A checkpoint or two would be nice. If your game is going to force fullscreen, you should probably add a quit button.

I can't seem to get over the first spike, the players jump height doesn't reach up to the ledge for me.

Just going to echo what the other commenters said: I can't get past the first part of the game due to twitchy controls and spikes that instantly kills both characters.

Cool concept, but like the other comments have mentioned, the difficulty is a bit too much from the get-go. It's very hard to get past the spikes at the very beginning without accidentally killing yourself or your daughter. I know it can be hard to balance difficulty on a jam game--I've definitely made ones that were way too hard.

I loved the music and the companion mechanics, I found the game frustrating at first until I realized there was a double jump lol. Made it to the dark blue area on a leap of faith and clipped through the world. The daughters jump was also tied to the players meaning she was basically able to fly through the green area. Great environment and platforming. Well done!

Maaaan that's some very hard game :D

Maybe you could expand on the idea that the daughter get caught on stuff sometimes and has trouble following ? With some puzzle mechanics or just to protect or because she's vulnerable to stuff your character is not ?

And great music ! :D
