Milk Store by Dinoraz

[raw]
made by Dinoraz for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

Milk Store is an short experimental game that uses iterative mechanics to generate variations, which offer a couple unique problem solving challenges. Also full of various secrets and anomalies that can be fun to discover.

Keep in mind this game benefits from multiple playthroughs! The more completions you have, the more stuff will change!

You can use the R key as a quick restart btw but I was too tired to tell that somewhere ingame and then recompile the game and all that other garbage lol

Also prepare some nice tunes externally because the mere though of attempting music myself is something that should not only make me shutter, but you too.

I wouldn't use the source code as study material if I were you. I'm a very messy programmer especially when trying to be fast.

(edit: if you do enjoy this game somehow then a twitter follow (@ DracorazDev) would be much appreciated.)

Dev Insight (not too important):

Thank you to the people who help run Ludum Dare. Although the game itself was only created within the span of the compo, this was actually a small idea I had floating around in my head for a while. When I realized that it fit the theme, I finally had an excuse to jump at the opportunity and get this little prototype done. It's definitely not perfect. Lots of mistakes were made. Compromises were common. Such is fate as a small beginner developer as myself. But this game was a solid learning experience that I can imagine I may come back to in the near future. It would take a lot of fixing and ironing out that I didn't have the opportunity to do because of the time constraints but this is still a very salvagable little game. So seriously, from the bottom of my heart, I want to give 3 big cheers to the organizers.

Anyway it's now about 3 AM over here in Australia as of writing this message. Whenever I decide to peace out and go to bed, the compo will be over by the time I wake up. It's been a couple of pretty rough days. But I will definitely be sure get some long, deserved rest. And take some better care of myself in general. I'm sure tomorrow I'll most likely take some joy in playing some other submissions and such. With that said, I think that'll have to be it for this sizable rant. If anyone is actually reading this I'd be pretty surprised but if you are, thank you for reading up to the very end.

Night night.

Interesting game... It was fun waking up to buy milk! The advantage is that if all I do is buy milk, then I can sleep for nearly the entire day!

Wow, I've actually enjoyed that game, when I take a look to my victories was like "31", but I really really don't know if I get all "variations", love the dino, the cow and the buggy but man....what did I miss???

Besides, I think you should get an improvement on graphics and make a big game out of it, with many variations as possible.

Nice one!!!!

thank you @jonathanfdr ! I had a bunch more variations planned and I wanted to put in some secrets that were less RNG based so I fo feel like I'll make this into a full game.
Oh and there's a couple more variations than what you listed but both are pretty rare and are only cosmetic changes.

I managed to get 25.1 secs speedrunning with the buggy :D To be honest, it got a little repetitive for my personal taste even though there were slight variations, but I like the graphics and the clean implementation -- didn't see a single bug! I ran through about 5 times

Not bad for getting some milk. Was pretty straight forward gameplay. I do like that I can do anything with the buggy, once I figured that out...except sleep.

I beat it 6 times, but the only thing that changed was one time the money was <spoiler> in a <spoiler> and I had to take two <spoilers> to the <spoiler> at the store instead. I see from your comment now that it's RNG based, which might explain why 5 of my runs were identical otherwise. I'd like to see more, I just wish it was in a set order!

Game was pretty clean overall.

Was able to drive a car inside, too xD

Was fun to try to race to the store to get milk as quickly as I could

This was nice and cute to play. I think the biggest problem was the lack of an indication of the varieties. It's all too easy to run the game 5 times, get the buggy and quit. A simple counter like "Levels 1/3" would help a ton.

Ive gotten the buggy time down to 21.35 and I can see a 21.25 or so if I stop bonking ;)

A narrativa é simples e direta.

3 - Cultura:

**[EN] Analysis...**

1 - Mechanics, Learning and Flow:
The game has simple and intuitive mechanics, breaking a speed record to perform a fixed sequence of actions.
I believe that the game could be more attractive to replay if there was a change in the position of the elements (but without leaving them further from mandatory points of passage).
Learning to play was fast, not having a flow of increasing difficulty (I suppose the focus is on breaking the record.

2 - Graphics, Audio and Narrative:
The graphics are simple and funny, they are enough to convey the concept of the game.
I missed any sound effect for money being picked up or spent, for the car in motion (mostly).
The narrative is simple and direct.

3 - Culture:
The visual style evokes references to some funny animations (this can allow for mechanic variants in the same flashy and simple visual style).
Racing games against time also have some cultural charm, being attractive due to this mechanics for many people.

4 - Monetization:
I suppose the game would need to be greatly expanded in order to become commercially viable.

Interesting game. Funny concept but not a lot to it. More levels or mixing things up more between playthroughs would make it more interesting. Good job!
