Keep the Rock Alive by Tornoz

[raw]
made by Tornoz for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

It's a game about managing a band and "keeping it alive". But please read the description, what follows is an early little post-mortem of the game.

So. This is an unusual one.

For the first time in my Ludum Dare history (6 games + 1MiniLD + 1 warmup) have I failed to complete a game. The result is not very playable and there is no win nor lose conditions and I do not wish to continue to improve it. There are still bugs and the balancing is wildly inconsistent.

I am obviously disappointed in the result but glad of the lesson learned (and I kinda like the Power Metal song name generator) : start small and expand on it. Do not waste time on big stuff and try to check if it is worth it and feasible before starting to develop it. I spent less times on entries that are way better than this.

I wasted a whole day on the map navigation and trying to add cities to it. In the end the map is useless and there are no cities on it because I approached the problem too naively and it would have required hours of work to place all the cities, for something that wasn't even needed by the gameplay.

I still want to post the result because there is stuff to show. I barely finished the main gameplay loop with horrendous code during the last hours and now i don't want to ever place my eyes on it. But I am not ashamed of it. I'm sure it happens everytime to a lot of participants of the Ludum Dare. It's just part of the risk and I will continue to take part and try to make a more pleasant game next time. I hope all of you who reads this are proud of your creation and hope you get nice reviews. See you on the next jam and rate this entry as harshly as it should be ;)

I have opted out of graphics because the only graphics are the ones in the UI lib and I didn't draw the world map myself obviously, just modified it to make it "my own".

This game is wildly ambitious. Although I love the idea, it does seem too much and these things are always balancing nightmares anyway. I really hope you try and do something with this in the future.

Definitely ambitious, and I think you have a good mindset about looking over how the weekend went. For me, pushing something out feels good, but I always get so much out of just trying something new within a time constraint. Glad you decided to post it as well, best of luck next time!

I really like the idea of managing a band! As you say yourself, the game feels fairly early on in development (if it were to be finished) so providing meaningful feedback is tough. I hope you were able to get something out of it either way and don't feel too disheartened that you weren't able to finish!

This is quite good! The map is a bit buggy if you zoom in or out to much, and moving it is a little jittery. I feel like a light drum beat, or some light background music would help keep the game interesting. I feel like a bit more user input would also help - such as clicking whilst on tour, or recording to improve interest? Overall it's prety good. Kudos on the uniqueness of the game!

Like the others said the game is very ambitious. But i really enjoyed playing it for a bit and see the stats go up! I think as a full game i would be willing to return and play it for a longer time!

The idea is promising. However the balancing was a bit off, I ended up in 2012 with more money than Jeff Bezos and should propably named my band Metallica or something like that :-) The name generator is nice, too bad the map did not work in the end.

As you said yourself, the game lakes balancing and isn't finished yet. But the idea is great and a very unique way of interpreting the theme. It would have been nice, if their was more user intergration. At the meoment I am just clicking two buttons and watching my numbers go up.

Really liked the Idea and the Randomly generated Names for the Songs. Thanks for sharing not only the Game but your experience, as well. Keep the good work up;)

Wildly inaccurate interpretation of the music industry ...in this game you can actually make money!! I enjoyed the game. The UI rendered a little strangely sometimes (maybe it's just my computer) but I seemed to still be able to play / understand what's going on.
