There were 8 hours left and I decided I wanted to participate after all by Corny

[raw]
made by Corny for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

A quick game I whipped up seeing how LD was about to end and I had nothing. Didn't have time to give it a title so I just went with... that. Or "8 Hours" for short. Has nothing to do with the gameplay.

Here's some tips!

  • You need to collect all four pieces of the ancient armor. Each piece gives you special buffs!
  • You get armor from slimes. Shiny ones have a higher chance of dropping pieces!
  • Try not to die. You'll be untouchable as long as you swing your sword, but don't let them overwhelm you with numbers!
  • If you're having a tough time, try extinguishing torches. I heard it's the fire that makes slimes so agressive.

Buffs provided by armor:

Heroic Helmet - Killing slimes heals you

Cool Chestplate - Your max HP is increased by 2

Gigantic Gauntlets - All slimes are a one-hit kill

Bouncy Boots - Get an extra jump mid-air

The game is a standalone .exe file - just launch it from your downloads folder and have some fun!

Controls:

Arrows - run left/right; Spacebar - jump; A - attack (S in Revised version); E - pick up items (D in Revised version);

Love the game juice in this one! Thou the attack animation does feel a bit weird.
Also, the music is amazing.

Very impressive especially for 8 hours! Short, well paced, fun! I got all the pieces and I feel good about it.

A fun and short game. Excellent music accompanies graphics sporting both a pleasing color palette and superb animations (though the attack animation is a bit stilted), creating a great mood that fits the game well. The slimes are a bit annoying and risky to hit due to their perpetual jumping (a risk amplified by the forward lunge of the main character's attack), so if you develop this further I would suggest for greater enemy diversity to be in the cards. In addition, the swift movement of the camera when switching directions is jarring, so perhaps it would benefit from slower tweening. In addition, I would place the "attack", "jump", and "pick up" keys in a more comfortable position, such as on Z, X, and C. Overall, very fine work.

@goldenglade Thanks for the extensive feedback! I am planning to greatly expand upon this project, so it's great to get comments such as this one. Do you have any thoughts on the level generator, perchance? That's a part I'd like to work on a lot, so I'd like to hear everyone out on it

Amazing music art! Although the controls are a bit weird and it would be better if the slimes appeared at a slower rate to avoid a sudden onslaught of 50 of them. I'd also make them one hit since how many there are but if you want to expand on this game you add more slimes that would take more hits. Great job considering you did this in 8 hours!

Nice game ! The music is great, the art too. I do not know if it's done on purpose but the camera goes back to the beginning of the level when we lose, it's a bit weird. Otherwise well done, making this game in eight hours, it's very impressive !

Damn, this in 8 hours? This level of polish? That's pretty frickin' impressive. The art may be simple, but they're expressive and clean as all heck! The screen shakes, the particles, the bassy hits... Perfectissimo. This is the sort of thing I'd like to learn to do quickly and effectively one of these days. Only bug I found was that when you die, your character still exists and can swing their sword. Overall, a very impressive display. Well done!

this is a very polished game for 8 hours, the music and sounds are amazing, and so is the combat the controls are very smooth, and it has great art style, the only drawback I can find is the camera, when you turn your player the camera swings to the other side and it makes me a little disorientated, But besides that it's a very good game.

As everyone's been saying, the amount of polish for how little time you put into this is really incredible - the animation feels better than a lot of larger-scale games I've played. Nice work!

For only 8 hours, i think you put together a solid gane! The armor pieces can spawn multiple times, check for instance_number < 1 before you spawn if you wanna avoid it and keep them rare haha

The drop rate was pretty high so i got through it faster than i wanted, and i think i was Mauled by invisible slimes at one point?

The art style was Simple, and stylized, loved the sound track and the mechanics fulfilled their purpose haha. i liked it, entertaining

This is a huge feat for 8 hours work (infact I might need to see the receipts you know). Excellent and well defined look and feel and great game-ness. Well polished title overall. Although, I did find the combat to be very hard to pull off, and found myself dying in every fight, which might just be me being bad and I think I can accept that.

@solwllms I've been trying to make a nice feeling platformer for ages now and I've written that player code SO. MANY. TIMES. that I could swear it was muscle memory at this point!

But I do concede that during day 1 I DID work on a different game before I gave up. Then 8 hours pre-deadline I decided that I can't just give up like that, took and recolored some sprites and copied some assets from it for my second attempt (a.k.a. this one)

So yeah, that title might be a bit of a stretch, since in reality I worked on the jam for like... 16 hours total, maybe? It's just that the first project got scrapped to bits and this one rose from its ashes right before the time was up, like some sort of gamedev phoenix

The feeling of the game is amazing, each hit really packs a punch! I also like the minimalist art. Good job!

I like the graphics and punchy sound effects, and how the slimes bounce around.

Very nice, especially for just 8 hours. Style reminds me of Downwell visually. Graphics and music are great. Controls well too. The only thing I disliked is the very snappy camera tilt when you turn.

satisfying to kill and move ... the screenshake that comes with the sword movement was perhaaps a bit too strong for me, made me a bit dizzy after a while ... there is a very hard game called +Love i believe ... this reminds me of it, it feels like a more juicy, and a bit more friendly, version of that one
