One Step Darker by thijs9907

[raw]
made by thijs9907 for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

When you fall into a well. your only saving grace is a lantern. But this lantern wont hold out forever you have to ascend back up. To keep yourself alive. Make sure the light does not fade it could mean the end..

The level select is a draggable pane so feel free to select multiple levels

This was our first time working together for a game jam, and were quite happy with how it turned out!

Hopefully many more to come, and we hope you have as much fun playing as we had making it!

controls

  • esc for menu
  • r to restart level
  • wasd to move

Really nice graphics and mood, the music kind of bothers me probably because it's repetitive.

Step and push animations feel a bit slow, maybe could be a bit more dynamic.

Cool game overall, congrats!

Great look and very atmospheric! Creeped me out every time the lantern was running out of juice lol

Your game is great but moving are little hard/slow :sob: I take some time on the first level (4 try) to understand that wasd is absolute and not relative to the player (I mean depending of player angle).

The moving feels very weird and hard to control, but otherwise a really nicely executed little puzzle game with great atmosphere and visual design. Thank you for sharing it!

Haha, you made a horror game out of the "strength"-pokemon minigame.
The movement is kinda sluggish, and it could benefit from a reset level button, but overal a nice puzzle game.

Nice!
The player movement is a little slow though.
Well done!

A very polished game, only found one tiny bug which helped me beat a level! Well done in 72 hours!

The movement feel weird. I don't feel the fire is burning out except when reach the ladder. Thought its game over

Nice entry! The mood is on point and the music is nice! Not too big on the sound effects tho and the movement could be a bit smoother. But a nice entry overall

Awesome game, but the movement is a little stiff and pretty slow. It felt like a slog going through the game. As for the light, it was hard to gauge how long it went for, maybe a bar or something that shows the player how long he has would've been good. The graphics however are awesome and very ambient. The aesthetic is awesome. Gameplay was still really intriguing, even if it did feel slow.

Movement is a little difficult to get use to. Really cool concept and good graphics though! Great job!

Make the Movement of the player smoother, I like the music but make the song longer because after a few seconds you go crazy. Great job!

As a sokoban fan, this is one of the best uses of the jam theme I've seen so far. If the controls were a bit more dynamic it would be perfect.

I really enjoy the graphics and your usage of lighting and shadows. I only wish the animations were faster. Cool game none the less.

The game took forever to understand, because the first time I opened the browser and moved the player with W A S D I could not see a thing whenever I moved. After that I restarted the browser, and the game worked fine. I had a good time thanks for the game!

The animation of character is too slow, it’s annoying.

Despite this I really enjoy the game! Puzzles have optimal complexity, I can find a way out. Atmosphere of the game is great and the connection between lantern and man looks interesting.

The rotation before each step really had me confused at first. I thought one key was for rotating, another for stepping. But eventually I figured it out. The puzzles are challenging and I love the sparks that fly about when the light gets low.

@gamebuilder I agree, when I started the game I didn't know it was grid based so the rotation and everything was weird. Anyway, good game with interesting puzzles. My only criticism is that the movement and animations are a bit too slow. It can take me up to 2 minutes to complete a simple level.

Beautiful artwork. I liked the sound effects ("pshooo!"). I used the webgl one, though, and it my computer fan is going crazy now.

I'm gonna go ahead and agree with everyone here. movement is a bit awkward and slow but graphics, animations and atmosphere are really cool. I really like the music it reminds me of the theme song of gwyn Lord of cinder from dark souls. cool game nice puzzles! great job

Maybe one of the slowest Sokoban i've ever played. It looks alright, atmosphere and lighting were ok, but the sluggish speed of the game makes it a frustrating slog I only finished thanks to level select.

Great game with nice visuals. I like how you use the light fade- out effect to load the next level. Pretty clever idea :)

Really nice game. The graphics were great! I love the procedural rocks. The controls were a bit slow, making them feel unresponsive, but overall the puzzles were really fun and you did well.

The overall look of the game is awesome
But, it is reaaaally slow to make the moves, that kinda gets in the way of the gameplay.

Besides that, great game ^^

The animations are slow, and are particularly frustrating when the character turns more than 360 degrees, but the puzzles were fun, and I like how the light fading means they get harder as you move.

Ziet er heel mooi uit en leuk gebruik gemaakt van het thema maar de animaties duren wel een beetje lang
