Hanging by a Copper Wire by Pepijn

[raw]
made by Pepijn for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

A platformer roguelike.

Story

Ido is a robot you found in the facility. As many things you have found there it was likely meant to be used in circumstances like this: desolate and radiated. It's very likely that facility was built to give shelter for the Blaze.

The robot had already entered power saving mode when you found it. the RTG had no fuel, and it was instead powered by a battery array on the wall next to it. all but 1 battery were bone dry, and the one that did function only had a few minutes of charge left.

You lay the robot on a table to get a better look, and see that it could help you get out of the facility. So you decide to head out and search for the required RTG fuel.

How to play

  • Keep the power on using batteries. press X to interact with a power plug and insert a battery or repair the plug using a fuse.
  • Exactly 1 backpack can spawn in the level, most likely in the leftmost columns (upcoming update changes this to the topmost rows).
  • Find the RTG Fuel on the bottom most row, and bring it to the robot to win the game.

The game tends to be slow at starting sometimes. I haven't experienced any issues, but a few friends who tested it did. Please comment if you know what could cause this.

I like everything aesthetically about this game- the atmosphere is great, and I really like the pixel art.
That said, in terms of gameplay it's best described as loose, from the combat to the objectives.
Specifically, the map was just to big and empty - once I actually found stuff, it was a chore to navigate all the way back to the robot, and when I found fuses my inventory was often already filled with batteries.

These are some legitimate critiques, but I actually really liked a lot about this game, I just thing real critiques are important. Positive rating from me!

Post Jam Update 1 will add wiring kits, wire boxes and more power plugs in different rooms to the game. power plugs can be connected to the robot using wiring kits and the wire box. Also, batteries will use power 1 by 1 instead of all at once, so you can replace batteries more frequently. a backpack will also spawn which expands your inventory space from 4 (was 2) to 12 inventory slots.

coming up near the end of this week, depends on how fast I get the refactoring done.

Quick reminder to get more players: Use a thumbnail for your game. Otherwise your game is presented with this grey box. Some great Games are not played because of a missing thumbnail ... You can still change it by editing your submission page :)

Interesting little exploration game, I think my main comments would be on the controls. It would be nice to be able to grab ladders after jumping, and if monsters hitting you wouldn't turn your character around.

I experienced a lot of delay and unresponsiveness (maybe it's just my pc). That being said the overall mood and the graphics are super nice. I would really love to try this out in playable condition. Maybe you could upload a html5 to see if that works better?

Great visuals. Good concept. Would have preferred controls based around WASD rather than arrow keys. Ability to drop items is needed as currently it gets filled with batteries so you can't pick up anything else.

@deadboygames Now i realise what you mean... I was shocked by the fact that my game was using 30% of my RTX 2060 Super... oof, sorry to the people with low-end pc's.

I will be adding a graphics downgrade option to the game ASAP.

The art and audio are amazing, the lights gives a nice mood. Gameplay wise the player is hard to control sometime especially when transitioning from staircase to jump. The enemies could be bit more challenging. Overall it's a nice concept and well executed. but man that music is so atmospheric, it makes me want to play straight away and reminds me of some cyberpunk scenario a-la bladerunner or altered carbon. Well done!

I ran into a lot of game breaking bugs, they were an easy fix tho. Post Jam update 1 is almost finished.

Really like the gameplay, it was really fun having to balance exploration with coming back and plugging stuff in! The graphics and lighting were aesthetically pleasing too! I wasn't sure how to use the ladders (or if you could) but that wasn't too much of an issue as the level design allowed there to be multiple routes to the location I was trying to get to, which was really good! Overall, this is a great jam entry which I had fun playing!

@deadboygames I've added an option to the game that disables lighting. the new 2d lights tend to use a lot of gpu power. If that doesn't work you can disable post processing as well.
