Sprouting Tale (LD46) by Tony_Artz

[raw]
made by Tony_Artz for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Introduction

In this game you play as Tulip, a gardener who sets out to give a new life to the barren forests. Use A and D to Move, Space bar to Jump, right click to throw the pot in air momentarily and left click to aim and shoot using your Slingshot. Remember to catch your plant again. You'll have to wait a while before you can jump when you throw the pot.

Jumping, Staying still and throwing the Plant in the air will cause the plant to Shiver up and die so keep and eye for that and plan before hand. The game also allows Players to collect Blossom Leaves hidden around the levels and finding them will require some exploring and attention.

Development Insight

This was my first ever game jam and I worked alone. I used Aseprite for pixel art and Unity as the engine.

Controls

| Key |Function | |-------------|------------| | A | Move Left | | D | Move Right| | Space Bar | Jump | | Right Mouse | Throw Pot | | Left Mouse | Shoot |

PS: Sorry for no Audio and only 3 levels, This was my first ever Game Jam and I just couldn't manage get to the music and sound effect done in time.

Updates :

*Fixed a bug where the platform leading to finish line in level 2 disappeared due to colliding with itself making the game impossible to finish.

*Fixed Camera going out of bounds when the player jumped from a high place due to y velocity being multiplied each tick the player was not on ground.

The pot throw was so small and fast I had a hard time catching it

Really love the atmosphere in this game and it does look great. If you had had the time to add any sound, it would have been beautiful. Great concept as well with putting a twist on the usual platformer and I liked the take on the theme as well with keeping the plant alive but not directly protecting it from attack.
I am pretty awful at coordination though and didn't make it very far through the first level despite multiple tries as I found it very diffcult to catch the plant again since it goes off screen and comes back down so fast with little indication of direction other than th dandelions in the wind but it is hard to react by the time it comes back into view.
Possibly making it easier to catch would make it a little more enjoyable but you can still keep the difficulty up through the level design. Great job though and an amazing product especially since it was a solo effort!

The pixel art is very great - the controls are ok but it is a little bit hard to hit it right.

I'm a youtuber, your game is very nice! I want to make a video with the best games of LDJam46. Something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOdTsWE7iIk .
Can I find your game also on indiexpo website? The channel is linked with them.

@torh I would be honored to be on your channel. However I was not aware of indiexpo and so I don't have my game there. However I have no problem hosting it there if its required.

Very nice game with great art! It would be nice if the flower was bigger, also when you throw the flower the camera should try to include it in the frame, so it's easier to catch.

Thank you for making a nice game ! We enjoyed it , also I really don't like snails so this was fun to do. Great innovation by coming up with a nice mechanic to make a platformer way more challenging. Well done !

Interesting game! I think the only real issue i have is that it needs more feedback for when your plant is about to die. I'm too focused on the main screen to notice what's happening on the side. Just a small nit-picky thing, but well done!

Cool twist on a 2d platformer. I also liked how the tutorials popped up as they were needed. Sound basic sound effects would have added a lot. Also I didn't like the fact that when I threw my pot it went off the screen and I couldn't see it. Great first entry!

Hi there, nice way to start jamming, welcome aboard! ;)
I really liked your graphics and, has you mentioned, missed the music background, since this fast pacing platforms kinda require that. I did not find the time to add sounds to my game as well... :P

I felt like the camera was up too close, so it had to move a lot only to keep the girl on the screen for a single jump. I have to confess that it took me a while to get used to the fast moves with a view so up close.
The idea of being able to shoot only when the flower is in the air is good, but as @petturtle mentioned, if the flower was bigger, that would help a lot. And again, if the player was able to see the flower up in the air while shooting enemies it would be fair. If it was meant to be this difficult, than maybe there should be some sort of progression, cuz the player will just get frustrated and give up, so he will not enjoy all the levels you planned.

Another thing, since there is a health bar in the right, I felt bad for dying so quickly when touching the enemie. That bar went straight to zero and game over. By the third time I gave up because I had to do all over again. Maybe some checkpoints along the way, idk...

Well, congrats and keep quality games coming! ;)

Clever idea and a nice take on the theme. I played on Android and it took some time to understand how to manage shooting and catching the pod.
The graphics are awesome.

Your first game jam, and you did all that by yourself? Well done! I haven't dared to try making a platformer in unity yet, and your runs beautifully. I couldn't get through the first level because I kept running out of water, I wish I could see more of the game.

Smooth response feel, nicely done!

I really liked the game mechanics, keeping the pot in the air was a great idea made the game unique.

Simplify the controls and get it on app store XD

Surprisingly fun and compelling gameplay once i got the hang of it. One time, i threw the plant when i stood too close to the wall so i couldn't pick it up, that felt a bit weird.

Graphics were super cute, especially the main character. I would've liked it if the levels were shorter but more of them instead, sort of like super meat boy or some other arcade-style platformer.

Overall, fresh idea, good take on the theme, and great game!

You know you are not supposed to UPDATE your game without specifying what you have updated. The rating process must take into account the ORIGINAL submission, not the update.

Please specify what you have changed so that I can rate this game. Feel free to ping me when you do.

Otherwise, it's not fair to other people who are rated only on what they managed to squeeze in 72 hours.

I wish you had put sounds and music, the pixelart is nice, and the way to shoot the snails and moles is interesting, a little more life to the plant to travel certain points

@kaisean-games I am extremely sorry, I knew about the rules and how one could update if there was a game breaking bug but one thing led to other and I completely forgot to add the update notes. I have updated the post with the things I changed. First being a bug where one of the breaking platform disappeared on load which made the game impossible(2nd level) other was where the camera would clip out of bounds when the player jump from a high place(all levels) and just showed the sky.

I am wholeheartedly apologize to you and assurr you that I completely understand the competitive and fairness aspect of this game-jam. I hope you understand that I didn't mean to break any rule or play unfair. I feel really bad for causing this mess and wasting your time. I am really sorry.

Hey, no worries. I apologize if my words sounded harsh, it wasn't my intention.

I just needed to be sure that the update is clarified. And considering that this is your first LD, I can understand your situation.

Don't worry. I just want the LD to be a community based on trust.

Now that you have clarified, I will now play/rate your game 😉

Review upcoming.

I've played the game. The graphics are really nice. The controls could have some refinement, but otherwise, it's a nice game. Too bad there was no music.

Keep up the good work.

Graphics are beautiful, some sound would have really added to the atmosphere of the game. I love platformers and games with collectibles so I found this enjoyable to play. I kept forgetting to throw the flower pot so I could attack, this probably led to most of my deaths. I made a platformer too, maybe you could check out. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/the-adventure-of-mr-bubbles

Very nice. I like the duality of the control's having to throw the pot and shoot the seed. Was very challenging, the graphics are also awesome too. Great job
