Despair by enderr42

[raw]
made by enderr42 for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

Despair is a dish best served...#cold?

Take advantage of spaceships stuck in an orbit around your planet, keep them there at all costs and make them desperate, all for scores!

This LD I was hoping to get some sounds and music made ( I've never done this before), and managed to get some awful ~10 sfx and a 20sec track, so i guess goal achieved!) Also, FYI, the Artificial no-so-much-Intelligence on ships can behave a bit strange, I did not have time to long-test it ;)

~~OK, Apparently there is an issue where some sprites are not showing on some computers, some texts are missing from time to time, and I have NO IDEA why. If you encounter this (eg no planet in main menu): i'm sorry. I will Investigate further. UPD I have found the culprit and am working to resolve it. The game is mostly unplayable on 16:9 screens.~~ [Changelog]:

Fixed The Bug where health bars did not display correctly, which made the game unplayable. I hate and love Unity at the same time;

Added webGL build with sound;

Added Linux build. Fixed bug where you could not apply skill's to previously frozen ships;

Fixed a major bug which caused the "AI" to stop updating decision weights after some skill's were applied

I really liked the art and I think the gameplay showed interesting concepts! Unfortunately I was not able to experience it properly... I was excited to test it out after reading the tutorial but not sure it's playable in this state. Here's a couple of issues spotted:
- enemy ships' gauges not displaying any changes upon player action. They all stay grey on my screen.
- sfx and music not playing. You seemed really proud of them yet i'm not hearing anything! =(
- on hover for the various actions is not super precise, I thought there wasn't a tooltip until I found a very small spot of the icon where it displayed.
Again, really a shame coz I was so pumped after the tutorial. But hey, that's game jams for you!

This game fits the theme very well and like the art style. But I agree with NamidaSai with what could be improved.

[UPD] Ship gauges and sound in web should be working now. Everything less is unfair to fix after submission IMO.

It took me a few minutes to grasp the concept of the game but once I did, I was totally into this. I'm a Cursed Planet! Survey vessels come here and everything goes wrong and then they make a horror movie about it. Absolutely lovely.

(I think I managed to break whatever loop was updating the status of the ships. Half of them are stuck halfway through a blue-circle countdown and one has popped out of its orbit but hasn't actually left.)

@josh-roby it was heavily inspired by a recent rewatch of Alien :) And yes, you have come to witness the artificial not-so-intelligence, sorry :(

There's a lot of content in the 'base' of this game that I think will give you a very wide scope for expanding in the future, if you wanted to. I really enjoyed it, and I'd certainly like to see a little more 'of' it.

I really like the concept! As I have been rewatching SG1 I feel I was in the right mindset to enjoy this game :)

A cool game concept that's currently a bit hobbled by bugs. I started with all skills unlocked, but kept receiving messages about unlocks. My ships also got stuck in the circle countdowns, as reported by others above. Sometimes I had multiple skills selected with a green border (I'm not sure if this is intentional to batch attacks), and I could not target any ships.
I also had hitbox issues when it comes to closing dialogs and viewing descriptions - maybe stemming from the fact that the game was running in a resolution bigger than fullscreen?

I'll be watching this page during the rating period, to see if any updates come out.

Really enjoyed the music, it is apparent that you have a good musical ear. I enjoyed making the ships going insane. Really cool content. There is a lot to improve to make the gameplay even more enjoyable but overall great work. :)

This is a fascinating concept for a game.

Unfortunately, a lot of the time I didn't feel like I knew quite what I was doing. Perhaps tooltips, with more detailed information about the ships and what their different actions mean, would have helped. Also I would have liked some way to view a reminder of the different ship types. I forgot what they all were with seconds of closing the tutorial. :slight_frown:

The game was also a little slow to get started. It's important not to overwhelm the player with too much to do at the very start, but spending most of the time just waiting for your only ability to cooldown is not very fun either.

Nonetheless, this was fun. The different abilities to be unlocked were all interesting and I really liked the music, too. Good job.
