Morel-ess Defense by poisondart00

[raw]
made by poisondart00 for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

-I Posted a post on here when I finished I forgot to post the game. SO Here it is! I hope I can still post it to the compo as I had completed and posted a post in the timeframe allotted and have not changed anything at all in the game sense.-

You start in a procedurally generated map full of trees, bushes, grass, rocks, and non-edible mushrooms (not morel). In the middle at the start is a small morel mushroom. You are to defend this mushroom from other mushroom pickers!

You must go around the map while keeping an eye on your growing baby morel mushroom. Pick other mushrooms and collect them. When you see an incoming mushroom picker you must use these picked mushrooms as "Ammo" to rid of the other mushroom pickers. Each hour the baby morel grows just a bit bigger. Each day attracts more pickers who want to steal your mushroom. If it gets to be too much for you. You can pick your mushroom at any time.

Loved the character color customization you had in the menu. Fun to protect my mushroom for a bit. I thin the high score screen says you self picked your mushroom even if you didn't. But yeah, nice job, cool graphics, how long have I been protecting this morel...days and days if I am counting the sunrise correctly ;)

Shows potential, there's kind of a big difficulty curve over the spawning rate but the game is pretty interesting

I greatly enjoyed the surreal 3D world that the game takes place in, with the shifting shadows. That being said, the mushroom-pickers come in very quickly and can be difficult to deal with, leading to the game often ending early and abruptly. Also, I just have to vent my frustration with the number of defend-the-thing-at-the-center-of-the-board games I've played since sunday. Not your fault, don't take it personally, just something that this theme really encourages. Nice work, congrats on finishing.

Really like the visuals of the game, having 2D sprites in a 3D environment is pretty cool. I wish that you could aim the mushrooms with the mouse or give more directions to you could throw it in as the amount of directions I could throw them in felt pretty limiting. I often found my self having to get right up to the enemies in order to hit them. You have diagonal movement so I wish there was at least diagonal throwing.

I like the basic gameplay: Protect something and venture away from it to collect items. Having upgrades that can be either collected or bought using mushrooms would give the game some more depth. The visual style of the game is nice. I love that you decided to add an option menu that allows to change hair and cloth colors of the player :D
