The Death Loop by droei

[raw]
made by droei for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

Aaaaah! My first Ludum Dare jam is done! Feel free to check it out at Itch.IO: https://droei.itch.io/the-death-loop.

This is my first time ever doing pixel art so my expectations of the graphical ratings are really low! I took this jam really casually as the theme didn’t fit ideas & I’ve been so busy lately! :P But I still really wanted to join & so I did!

All the source is on gitlab & can be found here: The entire project source can be found here: https://gitlab.com/detre_daan/ludum-dare-47 thumbnail.png xaJmlEA.png

- controls state arrow keys + space... have to use left click to advance dialog
- having to go through the dialog over and over gets annoying
- given the 'die-retry' loop, the death respawn time needs to be much faster.
- graphics are acceptable programmer art
- music was good, but felt out of place for the game play.

okay, so, i definitely had a good laugh but i can't say for certain whether i had too much fun. one thing you should be able to take into account when making games where people die a lot is the quick respawn. take for instance Super Meat Boy and I Wanna be The Guy, where you just spawn instantly after death.

it's not bad but it does live up to its promises, the game trolls the sh*t out of the player.

I am death.
But I am also awesome?
This game left me with some deep emotional questions.

I appreciate the honesty and humor of the message saying I was going to be trolled. Restarting cycle was a bit slow, but I liked the way the rest of the game toyed with my expectations. Congrats on your first LD jam! Keep coming back and keep making games!

I hate this game, absolute trash, SIKE!

might have needed a few more traps here and there but overall great for a first Jam. Hope to see you in others

I answered no on the first question and died immediately. And then I died in every possible way after that, and I even had to restart the game to go left at the start because I forgot to do that the first time I played. I had more fun finding different ways to die than winning the game, so I wish there were even more traps. The random saw blade out of nowhere made me jump, so that was my favorite, but I also liked the sikes and the cows.

Since there was a lot of respawning, the slow death and alive screens became a bit annoying after a while. It would be nice to be able to click past them.

I tried going through all the walls, but one of them let me go a bit inside it, which I thought was just a random glitch until the game told me there was a hidden door there.

I wasn't sure if that flat rock looking thing was supposed to be a button to activate the first trap, because it seemed to activate it even if I didn't quite step on it.

I managed to beat it! Absolutely well made game, going all in on the troll factor. I had the pleasure of playing it on-stream with you, and it was an amazing experience. Glad to have it!

Didnt expect to have fun dying so many times, beat the game. Like the chill tune in the background, art isnt great. In terms of theme.....dunno seems like just respawning to me. Pretty funny. Good job.

Nice one. Took me a while to figure out the last level so good job there  Really like the low-key music mixed with the carnage of dying all the time. Great work!

it's a great concept, and I had fun with it  like JLK said, if you're not using the mouse for anything else, don't make me click the mouse to advance dialog  I think it would be a brilliant game with a bit more time spent on the actual platforming mechanics - I always advise against platforming for game jams, because it's super difficult to get right :grimacing: for reference, Celeste has 1500 lines of code **just** for movement. There's a lot of complexity in good platforming! That said, it's a great take on the theme and it was definitely fun to play. Well done!

Very entertaining, I didn't know what to expect along the journey! That invisible saw blade that popped out for the first time made me not so sure about roaming around xD Other than having to click the dialogues with the mouse I had a good time, and it genuinely made me smile. Especially those sound effects.. No!!!! And "Sike!" So funny! And raining cows! That's just epic, I mean come on ;)

Nice submission, death loop concept is cool. I did wish I didn't have to go through that menu every time though. Great job :)

Great game! It was fun, i felt trolled since the main menu with that EXIT on a WebGL game HAHA, grahpics are simple and is playable! Good jokes too, awesome game

Thanks you all so much for the nice comments and great feedback everyone! :D
I took a complete different direction this jam, taking things more casual and focus on being myself while making the game instead of making something that had to be impressive! The unexpected amount of nice comments really came as a surprise, thank you so much! :)

It is a very nice little game, and I particularly liked the dev art style and the sound effects/voice acting.

To finish it, it took me actually longer than I had expected - I saw your devlog video and wrongly believed the solutions were spoiled ^^ All deaths were pretty unexpected, and the popping up blade actually killed me on a second try of a later obstacle

So, very well done. I had a good time playing it - dank je wel, and keep up the good work!

Interesting idea. Getting trolled isn't for me, but I suppose there's a market for this kind of humor, so I commend you for finding a niche. I think that the controls could be tightened up, and resetting the level with out going back through the dialogue would be nice, but still a very nice Compo entry.
