Luciole by LaJazuve

[raw]
made by LaJazuve for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

In a world where night is eternal, where dark creatures lurk in the surrounding shadows, and where humans are primitive; They know the fire, but its creation still eludes their young minds.

Away from the tribe, Luciole finds the gift of fire in the heart of the forest, and now bears the burden to bring back a flame to his god, for he alone can shine away the everlasting night....

for survive you should stay in the light, grab tree branch and ignite it for light your way

I made this game from scratch alone, all assets ,graphs, music and code. Enjoy it ! i don"t have the time for music implemented and..death condition in the Jam Build, sorry ^^" But it's now in the PostJam Build.

*the build post jam have some fix, add music and death... you can change commande azerty to qwerty in the option's menu

How To Play:

Abstract: check options for qwerty keyboard!

QWERTY

*A/D -walk

E - take branch in tree or ignite it in light for 1branch

Q - revives the torch you hold for 1branch

S- put down or take object (torch or crate)*

AZERTY

*Q/D -walk

E - take branch in tree or ignite it in light for 1branch

A - revives the torch you hold for 1branch

S- put down or take object (torch or crate)*

in the JamBuild, I haven't implemented qwerty keyboard... you can switch your keyboard language if you have a azerty keyboard mode. in the PostJam build you can choose for qwerty or azerty control in the option menu.

When i read the feedback, the controls are pretty confusing so a complete explaination with images !

First, walk!

You can going to the left and to the right with * "q" and d" (azerty keyboard) or "a" and "d" (qwerty keyboard).*

The Danger

danger.gif

creatures lurk in the dark, if you going in it, without light, they are chasing you and eating you ! if they touchs you,it's game over, return to the start menu.

(In the Jam build, the death is not implement...but it is in the postjam build.) for save your skin, return in the light the most faster you can, they are going back hide in the dark.

Third,Take some branchs

lighttorch.gif

So, for avoid danger, you need light ! for that takes a branch in a tree, the collectable branches are just the ones in the height of the character. when you can take one, a sign appears on the top of the head of the character, this sign appears for anything you can interact (branches, torch and crate).

* Press "e" to take the branch*, the number of branches you have is on the top left of the screen.

and return in the light to avoid creatures...

Four, ignite your first torch !

lighttorch2.gif

for ignite your branch, you need fire ! you can only ignite a branch WITH a light source so return in the light of the big fire, and press e this consume one of your branches, the number of them decreases on the left top screen's corner. You have your first torch !

othertorch.gif

if you already hold a torch, you can't ignite a new one. but you can put on the floor the one you hold and then, ignite a new one in the light of the first one

relight.gif

The torches are consumed and their light diminishes. You can pay one in your reserve of wood for relighting your torch before it goes out. For that press "a"( with azerty keyboard) or "q"(with qwerty keyboard)

And Five, put down your torch, take a crate and climb on it ! (its the most confusing controle :stuckouttongue: )

posecrate.gif

You can hold just one object at the time, so for moving a crate you should put down your torch. For that press "s" to put it down Now, you can take the crate. move to the crate presse "s" to take it, move where you want to put it and press s you can return take your torch.

For climb on the crate, going to it and press "z" (azerty keyboard) or "w" (qwerty keyboard)

this part is a little buggy in the JamBuild, some hitbox's issues...

Now you know how to play to Luciole ^^. Enjoy it ! (if you can play it...)

    • I have deactivate the music rating because at the end of the jam, i had not implemented it in the game, i'm pretty sad for this.. so a link to listening it : * *

the art style is cool but this feels very unfinished to me, i wasn't really sure what to do other than walk back and forth

Overall interesting, though I clipped through the floor after the first crate. It was a bit difficult to use the controls -- I think you have azerty and qwerty mixed up.

The controls seem mixed up like others mentioned, but I really, really like this art style. Will you be writing a postmortem? I'd love to learn how to make something like this! Great mood and of course great job on submitting!

The art style was very good, and I enjoyed it. The game, however, seems very broken. I just couldn't figure it out. I was able to get one stick, light it, and drop it elsewhere, but I could never find another. I'm not sure what it means when he gets the marks around his head? And as has been mentioned, the a/q controls are backwards.

This game is gorgeous to look at and I really love the setting. Unfortunately, I didn't get very far because I couldn't figure it out, but I really would like to see you continue to work on this because it has a lot of potential!

I tried to pick up a tree branch and was unable to figure out how it was done. I pressed S. I held S. I tapped it but I couldn't do it. I tried switching between controls. This made the game frustrating. I would suggest you put a tree with a grab-able branch in the light so the player can practice/test the mechanic without the monsters descending on you. Cool concept and art though would be interesting to see this concept grow.

The graphics are beautiful and the atmosphere is great! But as others said, the controls were far too confusing and I couldn't go far. I tried the postmortem version and it still felt really weird. Having to hold down S to place stuff was really uncomfortable. But hey, I can see you put a lot of work into it, good job!

Nice look! I checked out the settings out of curiosity and realized I had to set the keyboard to qwerty which was lucky (maybe force people to choose on launch of the game so people don't miss it). The graphics and audio felt really creepy (perfect).

Something to do next time could be to make it more obvious what the player has to do within the game and make it easier at the beginning so people can ease into it.

I have found that this is a common issue in game jams (in fact my entry to this jam has the exact same issue), I generally make sure I have some text on screen that tells the user what the can/can't do and sometimes even what button to press.

Nice entry thanks for sharing it :)

Hello everyone, thank you so much for all your feedback !! I'm glad to read all yours com', it's important for me ! Yes controls and "what can we do?" are pretty confused, in add to that ,@Ordineu i have completly forget that my keyboard is in AZerty, sorry... In the Jam Build, some hitbox are fucked up,and my english is not very good i think..a lot of things that makes the game, complicated. @BitPokit I want try to makes the game better so I'll continue it. I'm glad if you want discuss of what can i do for how i can improve it. In a fews days, @zesix i'll write a post mortem for explain what i have trying to do, i can explan too how i did this kind of graph, and @james-duniap @vernailbehemoth I'll re-write my presentation, for more clarity, with a detailed "How to play?" for exemple. I think you have made something special with the mood and art style, but it is a bit of a shame that the gameplay does not quite back up that promise! The controls very pretty confusing, but I followed your guide above and figured it out.

Once I figured out the controls, I really liked this game! The art direction was perfect for creating the tone you were going for. While the mechanics could certainly be expanded on to improve it, what you got to in the course of the jam is a good start.

The style in this game is excellent! The visuals on the trees, the light halo, the spooky tree things. And that ending! The pick up/put down mechanics were a little clunky, and setting the default keyboard to AZERTY was kinda silly, but other than that this is probably one of my favorites of the jam so far!

@silas-the-dev @nsadie thank you so much, and i'm glad that my explanation was useful. I'm completly agree with
your disappointment, i'had no plan from beginning to end. At start i had just the idea of a character who should carry a flame, nothing else, i started the, graph, code the torch and mouvement and here, i added feature bit by bit when a idea comes to me..so it's not very "think" and it's a probleme at the end , specially for controls. I want to try to improve it and maybe "think" ^^

@ankou thank you, happy you enjoy it ! like i said, i want try to improve it, but for now I don"t really work on it since the jam, maybe this weekend. if you have any suggestions I'll be happy to read it :) I'll post in feed sction if i made something !

@kptnholz thank you, I'm very happy that people think that my music add really something to the mood of the game, and don't just be seen as noise.

@jake-marks Thanks you so much ! it was totally unexpected when i join your stream by curiosity and you've played my game before!! and thanks you again to have replayed it when i was on your stream !
Yeah, sad story for the Azerty keyboard, here we have a different keyboard and I forgot completely... -_-"

thanks you all, i'm really touched, not all days we can show what we doing ! thank you and congratulation for everyone for yout work too !

*Sorry for my english, maybe confused .. like the game.. english is absolutly not my first language..

Really interesting and atmospheric game! I will say tho, that even with the detailed instructions on this page, I had difficulty starting the game. I needed time to play around with the controls and figure it all out, but the game just threw you straight into the deep end, with the ghost things killing you if wait for even a second. The ghosts need to give you more time, particularly at the start to help players figure out how to control. I loved the atmosphere of the game, but it doesn't seem like the music loops, so the last part sounded a bit weird with the clicking / chattering / geiger counter sound being all you could hear. I really love the lighting effect you made, how the light cast on the trees is hand drawn. Made for an awesome visual style, the visuals were definitely a huge highlight of the game. I also loved the panic when I realised that the light was getting dimmer! And finally, nice job with the final scene, I left the ending to the last minute and rushed it like crazy, but you can tell that a lot of effort and care was put into your ending, congratulations!

Hey, for someone who had no idea, it's a cool one! The graphics are lovely, I like the weird ost, but, as everybody said, the controls are really clunky. Apart from that, a cool game which could have a backstory. Who's that big thing at the end? What is happening? Glad you keep working on it! Keep up the good work! (I read the description on itch.io, so I got it! haha. So, the god. Creepy dude)
