DUƎL by JLV

[raw]
made by JLV for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Controls

Arrows / WASD : Move your character

Space : Dash. A gem will be placed at the end of your dash.

Enclose items and enemies inside a triangle of gems and see what happens...

Tip : The balance is (not so slightly) off, and the game might come off as overly difficult. It all becomes easier if you spam the dash, as it provides invincibility frames. The boss only has three lives...you can do it !

I struggled a lot 'cause it was too fast for sleepless me but it was a very fun, simple game, great job! :)

really not bad for 24 hours!
and the idea has the potential to be developed into a fun arcade game

Lol, that ending caught me off guard. Pretty good game! It'd be better if the gem was placed at the start of your boost, but it still was a lot of fun.

Really liked the idea of forming a triangle to kill the boss. Seems like a good idea to have implemented in a bigger game

I'd love to see a further development on this because this version now was rather short. But at least you can finish it within 5 minutes. Game was fitting the theme. There could be some other audio during the pre-boss room or in the start menu because it felt a bit empty.

Nice work, I know it's a bit short but the speed of the final boss stages actually caught me off guard. Luckily I could more or less just form the same triangle so it was just a matter of executing on that. The concept itself is pretty neat and I haven't seen many games this LD that did this sort of mechanic.

How did it feel to try out a more action-y kind of game this time around?

The concept of the game is nice! The music is nice! I wonder only where is the loop ? I guess it is not finished to show it, is that correct ? Anyways, the game has potential.

Thanks for playing !

@peachtreeoath It was much more fun to test and debug, but the initial design process was less entertaining : pure game design is not really my thing...

@obi-one The loop is present in two places : the triangle you need to build is kind of a loop by itself, even if it's the most basic geometrical close shape one can think of. There is also a nod to the theme in the "ending scene".

Really fun action puzzle game!

Here are my feedback:

_Positive points
- Nice pixel art
- Intresting and clever usage of the theme with the triangles
- Nervous gameplay
- Good sound design

_Negative points
- The enemy is a bit too speed just after the first blow, so it makes the timing tight for me

Overall: Nice work!

Small game ! Nice !

At least it's a playable game for a Jam 😁

Good job

Fun idea! Trapping an enemy in a triangle could make for some fun gaming. The proof of concept here is good, but the boss was a bit unforgiving and difficult. I managed to beat it by spamming space like you suggested!

A nice little game with all its content concentrated in a very small timeframe. Impressive that you managed to make this in only 24 hours!

In terms of *gameplay*, the concept here feels really fresh and intriguing. Dodging the enemy becomes the attack, and I definitely feel like this could be developed into something really interesting. Given your time constraint, you obviously weren't able to explore this too much, and it's unfortunate, since the concept of this kind of puzzle-like combat is quite unique. But this definitely stands as a nice proof of concept!

The *audio* was surprisingly developed for a 24 hour game! Especially the music that plays when fighting the boss was really well made. I also liked the duality of the interpretation of the *theme*, both in the gameplay and in the quite surprising ending.

Overall, this game definitely feels unique and interesting, but I was left wanting more! But with consideration to your time limit, this is still a well made game.

By the way, spamming the spacebar somehow damages the boss and opens the door.

The mechanic is interesting. Good pixel art and music. I think it's a good base. The ennemy go too quickly too fast and then it's very difficult. Some polish and other ideas with this concept and you can make a small cool game.

The triangle diamond dash thing is a really cool weapon. I would love to see what more can be done with that. Also I like the twist at the end, good use of the theme. Sometimes I wasn't able to dash but other than that it worked fine. Good job!
