Fordhill by Ethan Losten

[raw]
made by Ethan Losten for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

No time to explain, creatures of the night are coming! This fire is our last hope for survival, protect it at all cost! Build the line of defense first. Here, have your tools, some sticks, a few stones... Well, that's not really a lot of stuff, but... but maybe you can find a use for it! My time is up, so good luck and try to not get us all killed!fordhill.png

TIPS:

  • Keep the distance from enemies
  • Aim with the red square to hit enemies
  • You can heal near flame, if you have food (Q button)
  • You can buff traps while in craft mode, if you're near flame (E button)

This is sooo hard. Like the graphics! Was a bit hard to know that my attack range was so big. At first I was just running into enemies ahha. Mechanics seem tight just needs a bit more balancing I think. Cheers!

I love the art style, it fits the game perfectly! The game itself is fun, if a bit hard. Very good entry to the jam

I like the graphics and the trap variety.
My issues with it are that the controls are a little bit clunky (really easy to miss a swing and get hit) and it would have been nice to have audio feedback. I also couldn't find how to heal making the game quite hard.
But I liked it a lot, well done !

Neat game, the attacking was a little difficult to pull off which added to the difficulty but still a really cool concept.

Really nice art. I like gameplay. Collision with enemies were weird few times. Also managed to get my self stuck with mine:)

Wow, you surely don't choose easy paths! You managed to put a lot of content into the game in a really short period, well done! Graphics are awesome, crafting and putting stuff where you want it feels nice. It's a bit confusing that the game doesn't end on player's death though.

Love the art style, I think the movement mechanics need a bit of tightening but other than that a lot of fun

Very original concept, I find this is better then a traditional tower defense and your mood is really onpoint, with the darkness around the ford and stuff... Good job!

Really nice. Would've been even better with sounds. As other people said, it's pretty polished, good job on that as well.

One of the more fun games I've played. I kind of expected you'd be able to lure the enemies into your traps with barricades, but I guess that kind of pathfinding is a bit too much to ask in such short time.

The graphics style you have here is really nice! I see what you are going for here, and the idea of a sort of free-form tower defense has always appealed to me (wintermaul and the like). I found it a little hard to understand what all the resources were. I do wish there was some audio to accompany all that nice art work :)

Nice entry.

Nice graphics and gameplay. The control and hitbox issues mentioned makes it a bit hard to play & enjoy, but that's easy to fix. Well done!

Nice take on tower defence / king of the hill. Like the idea.
Hitboxes can do with balance, but otherwise nicely done!

Liked the environment. Characters and attack animations were also a plus. Good use of the theme. Nice jam!

Is it even possible to win this game? Challenging yet fun!

Things to improve (imho):
- Hit registration, some visual feedback, hp bars for enemies
- Some short description on what each defense structure does.
- A bit longer pause between waves, at least when player leans the mechanics and controls.
- HP bar for your base.
- More enemies!
- More graceful collisions for player movement. Maybe just slowing down instead of hard blocking.

It was fun to play, thank you!

@icxon well, it's actually not possible for the current state of the game, we would like to add more variety to the gameplay and balance it :D
We are working on some major improvements which unfortunately won't fit in the rules of Ludum Dare.
We are very thankful for your feedback, it is really important for us to understand how does the game feel from the player perspective. We agree with these statements, especially we noticed that the feedback from the game is really poor right now and needs a lot of improvement.

Thanks again for your time and patience :^)

I love the pixel graphics and think the theme is interesting. For this to be a tower defense game, my suggestion would be for there to be various paths that the enemies will come in on where you can place the traps. I found the traps to be more trouble than they were worth. If I knew where the enemies were going to be traveling I might have been able to place the traps more effectively. This is a great start for something, with some sound and a bit more work on the gameplay I think it will be great.
